In The Tyranny of Merit Harvard professor Michael J. Sandel examines the widespread cultural belief that success is entirely self-made. He argues that society promotes a merit-based narrative, creating a system that is inherently unfair in a democracy: If you work hard and have talent, you will rise; if you don’t rise, it must be your fault. This story turns success into a sign of virtue and failure into a mark of shame.

Sandel argues that this thinking fosters pride in the successful and shame in those who struggle, weakening community bonds. He calls for a shift from pride in our own merit to gratitude for the gift of grace, urging us toward compassion and a shared commitment to the common good.

This raises a profound question for people of faith: What is a person’s worth? Though we affirm that everyone has equal value, this truth often clashes with the world’s standards of success.

Join us for “Beyond the World’s Price Tag,” a sermon series from January 11 to February 8, that challenges us to look past worldly measures of worth. Together, we’ll explore God’s economy of grace, where our value isn’t based on achievements but is unconditionally given by our Creator." An orange bar at bottom contains reversed text: NEW SERMONG SERIES. A listing of dates and sermon titles from January 11 through February 8 appears at right.

WATCH: "I think we are in a moment where Jesus is a victim of identity theft. I don't know what Bible folks are reading—attacking the poor in the name of the faith," says Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock.
