Root beer is often the least erosive, for some reason!

Uh, regular Coke or Pepsi is more erosive than sugar-free versions, just FYI.

After all the discourse about voter ID and mail-in ballots in the U.S., it blew my mind that as an American abroad I can register to vote online, and they sent me my ballot in an email. I have to mail or fax it back to the U.S., but some states let you email it back! www.fvap.gov/citizen-vote...

Living in Sweden during the election season is very fun for a politics-wonk. Eight parties (in parliament), all putting up posters and sending us extensive literature every week. The local Liberals support SMRs, and this random dude hates wind & the EU & NATO
The platform of the Swedish Liberal party, highlighted support for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)

It's a first world problem in that they are the first to heave to find a solution, but it's actually a much bigger problem for low-income countries that don't have the grid infrastructure to handle frequency fluctuations as well. Big problem now that developr won't build more RE if they can't profit

Full shutdown of a few reactors across a fleet of 50, you're still looking at similar % in terms of lost capacity with the country's solar fleet. The nuclear shutdowns are an environmental regulatory constraint, not safety. The plants could be retrofitted to stay open, like other (hotter) countries
010
Jessica Lovering @lovering.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
But it applies across the entire fleet of solar and wind, so the loss of generation could be quite similar to a few nuclear plants shut down temporarily. France plans all of its nuclear refueling shut downs in the summer anyway, because demand is lower

Summer is here, and it’s not just air conditioners that are blasting. More heat pumps than ever are flexing their cooling muscles.

Heat pumps may soon outsell air conditioners in US
For years, heat pumps have outsold gas furnaces in the U.S. — and now the superefficient appliances are coming for conventional ACs, too.

So, not so fun fact: while nuclear always gets attention in French heatwaves, renewables and batteries also decrease performance in the heat. Solar PV efficiency drops as temp increases, and wind generation also declines as the air is less dense (and often it's less windy when it is hot too).

Jessica Lovering @lovering.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
Fun fact: solar panels and wind turbines also produce less electricity when it's hot. France schedules maintenance at nuclear power plants in the summer because demand is low anyway, so not all plants are needed

This is a well-known effect across a huge range of environmental and public health risks. Men rate smoking as less risky, for example. There’s also a big racial gap, so black men view nuclear as riskier than white men.

You're right that Wyoming exports a ton of its wind energy, to the benefit of more populated places like California. Part of why there's pushback is that they feel the impacts, but the electricity is used elsewhere. Just because the state only has 500k people, they still need clean energy
000
Jessica Lovering @lovering.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
There's actually a lot of local opposition to wind farms in Wyoming, but the community hosting this nuclear power plant really wanted it (they competed to get the project).
000
Jessica Lovering @lovering.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
70% of Wyoming electricity comes from fossil fuels :( They are replacing a coal plant with this nuclear power plant, which seems like a great idea! Need clean, firm power to partner with all that wind if you want to fully decarbonize the grid.
