Gosh, I'd be happy if you'd preorder my book. ❤️ It's true there are no dragons or aliens or mob bosses... but there ARE abolitionists & log cabins & evil land speculators & interwoven themes of what it means to be an ally and find the courage to make change... louisemayberry.com/products/the...

A room that sets the mood for what's to come... #wipsnips
The small room lay in the back corner of the house, sunken slightly and set apart from both the bustle of the kitchen and the society of the dining room and parlor. A hooked rug of dark blues and greens covered the floor, and the walls were papered with a pattern of gold stripes over a navy field. An elaborate mantle clock ticked away on the sideboard. Owen squinted at it. Quarter past three. There were hours of daylight remaining, but very little of it filtered through the two north-facing windows. Stepping into the gloom, Owen had the sudden vision of the stripes on the walls as the bars of a cage…

“What?”
“Nevermind. It’s nothing.”
Did he want to attempt it tonight? That seemed unwise, given his injuries, but clearly something was on his mind. “Tell me.” She infused some of her schoolteacher’s authority into the command, and it worked.
Owen ducked his head, an embarrassed grin playing on his face. “I— I’m a mess, and everything hurts but—” His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed, then he spoke quickly, all in one breath. “I just thought that you haven’t found any pleasure tonight, but I have, and I wondered if you might show yourself to me while you…” He sucked in a breath. “While you pleasure yourself.”

Almost too many #well 's to choose from for todays #wipsnips, but here's one. Always interesting to describe a character from a particular point of view, especially their own. (No surprise, she's actually quite pretty.) From The Rain and the Light, releasing October 21.
She could just make out her silhouette in the mirror, a gray shadow against the gloom. That was for the best. She had no wish to examine the details. She knew too well what she would see. A pale woman, much too thin for her frame, mousy hair hanging limply down her back. Small, shriveled breasts. Jutting hips. A weedy thatch of fuzz between her legs.

I read the details of the Cornell sexual assault earlier today and have been having so many unfolding thoughts and feelings... First, I was shocked at how NOT shocked I felt by what they did to her. I attended a (much less prestigious) private college many, many years ago, and

Had to look through quite a few books to find any kind of interesting use of #grounds. But I found it! This is from 'The Song of the Magpie', the love story of a convict and an Irish farmer in 1826 Australia... #fridayfling #romancelandia
The group was brought to the grounds of the prisoners’ barracks, to the blacksmith, where one by one the irons were cleaved off.

It hurt like the devil when the smith hammered the rivets that held Michael’s shackles in place. Then all at once they fell away and...

He’d expected relief at finally being free of the irons, but oddly enough, as he took his first few steps, he felt only their loss, unstable, like a ship without an anchor.

I'm not much into violence, so I always read my fight scenes to my husband and my 13yo son for their expert critiques. I read this scene to each of them separately, but had to laugh when (at exactly the same place in the text) they both gasped and exclaimed, "No! Not the pie!" #wipsnips #tumble

Drafting a newsletter, and it's been cathartic to write, but it definitely falls into the this-is-very-personal-and-makes-me-feel-exposed-and-I'm-not-sure-I-want-people-to-read-it category. (Yes, that's a real category.) We'll see if I have the guts to hit send on Thursday.

An abandoned log cabin, snowed in with the beautiful woman he's not supposed to kiss, snuggled up close to preserve body heat... Any guesses how this turns out? 😅❄️🔥
Why did she have to smell so damn good? Warm flesh and lavender and wood smoke, with just a hint of damp wool—somehow headier than the most expensive perfume.
She shifted and tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear, then pressed her palm to her cheek and slowly wiped down to her lips, her chest…
Good God. Owen pulled his attention back upward. Her tidy bun had been reduced to a messy, tangled mass.
“Would you like me to take your hair down?” he asked. That would be something to do. A distraction.

There's something so magical about a perfectly curated historical scene. This is The Wade House Hotel in Greenbush, WI. A suite set up to reflect a Civil War recruiter who once stayed there... Can't you just imagine him sitting there, writing a letter?
A small table and chair sits in front of a window. On the table is a glass lamp, a blue Union soldier's hat, a silver tray and an empty plate and fork.

Just a tender little moment.... From The Rain and the Light. #wipsnips #exhaust
A gust of wind blew at them, and a violent shiver took hold of her. “You’re cold.” Owen pushed the door back in place, then circled her with his arms. He was as wet as she was, and probably just as chilled, but there was something comforting about his solid presence behind her. His arms around her. She could feel each of his inhales… each smooth exhale, like riding on waves. Exhaustion rolled over her, and she leaned back, resting her head on his chest and closing her eyes. His arms tightened, and his warm breath puffed on her neck.

It occurred to me today (while driving people around in my Uber) that the lowest paid, most taken advantage of laborers of our age - the restaurant & retail workers, the Amazon delivery & warehouse staff, the gig workers - all have to work on Labor Day. The people who get the day off need it least.

It's crazy how unforeseeable and unpredictable, yet lasting associations are made, not by what people did in life, but by the timing of their exits. Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, Wendell Berry & Gloria Steinem will be forever, inexplicably linked in my mind... A wonderous group. They will be missed.

As soon as the maid was out of sight, Owen turned to the washstand, leaned into the mirror and examined his face. He bared his teeth, turned his head this way and that, combed his fingers through his hair. Then he backed up a step and looked down his front, checking for stains, or a missing button. He lifted each shoe, peering at the bottoms. Sniffed under his arms. There was nothing amiss. Beyond a little travel dust and sweat, and the dark sheen of stubble on his cheeks, he was just as presentable as he’d been when he’d readied himself at the inn that morning.
So what was it? What had she found lacking?
