Les conférences tech comptent énormément pour moi. J’y ai appris, rencontré des gens, construit des amitiés, trouvé des idées, des projets, parfois même une bonne partie de ma vie pro. Aujourd’hui, beaucoup de ces événements souffrent : moins de sponsoring, moins de billets, moins d’adhésions.

The gist: it's the last details that sell it. The yellow sash and the sandal straps took five minutes each, and they're the whole difference between "a crochet doll with a straw hat" and Luffy.

He came together in stages, and each one looked wrong until the next one fixed it. The bare body was more haunted doll than pirate captain. Then the hair went on, strand by strand in black yarn, and the whole thing turned a corner in about twenty minutes.

I spent an embarrassing number of evenings looking at other people's patterns, but none of them was the one in my head, and most were bigger than the hat I'd already made. So the hat came first, and everything else got built to fit it.

Work in progress, held in one hand: a bald amigurumi body in skin-toned yarn with large brown safety eyes, blue shorts with white cuffs and yellow feet, no hair yet. The finished yellow straw hat is held beside it for comparison.

Then I put it on the cat. Nube wore it for about four seconds, and that was enough. If a straw hat is that recognisable at that size, the rest of Luffy had to exist under it.

There was no plan behind it, I just wanted to see if I could crochet something that small. My wife laughed, which is all the encouragement I ever need, so I started a second one. Somewhere between the magic ring and the first increases, the yellow yarn stopped being just yellow yarn.

6/ The gist: 31 goblins in a month taught me speed. The daily deadline stopped me overthinking, which is my usual creative killer. 5 gnomes over a summer taught me the opposite. Days on each one instead of hours, and they ended up with actual personalities.
