On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.

The 9 games that shaped who i am

The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask: favorite game to this day. The living nature of the world, time travel, horror elements, etc are all etched into my brain and reshaped what games could even be. Also, i think using transforming masks (and other masks) left a permanent mark on my young mind

Pokemon Silver: i had gen 1 pokemon thanks to my cousins’ hand me downs, but silver was my first pokemon to launch when i could actually know how to play them. Instilled a love of RPGs, GBC aesthetics, chiptune music, etc.

Prey 2017: Altho i had played immersive sims before, Prey made me obsessed with the subgenre and caused me to revisit the other games and experience a boatload of new ones. Dishonored 2, Thief, SysShock, and Deus Ex being highlights

Sonic Adventure DX: first 3D sonic, first gamecube game, one of the quintessential 3D platformers. Hoo wee i was obsessed with sonic throughout elementary school.

Spyro the Dragon: made me love video games as an art form (earliest love of art style and music) and probably made me obsessed with video games for my whole life lol

Final Fantasy XIV: tight comp between this, 7, and 9. I’ve made a ton of friends through this game and is maybe my most-played game ever

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne: close match between this and Persona 4. P4 was a high school obsession, but i think Nocturne made me an atheist. Reshaped how i look at religions and individuality, and made it odd to return to church afterwards

Xenoblade 1: the game blew my mind a million times as a teen and is still my benchmark for environments and world-building. Opened the door to so many other games that i also fell in love with

Metroid Prime: reshaped my entire opinion on first-person games and what they could be. Player-driven discovery and exploration, and playing as Samus hit me right when puberty caused my dysphoria to skyrocket as a young teen. Wanting to be her was my light in the darkness as a miserable wreck

I love FF14 but i think its biggest point of missed potential is that theyve never had a major character become tempered and throw a massive wrench in the narrative. Obviously if say, Yugiri or Hien or Lyse were tempered, Stormblood would be a completely different expansion
