You can try it yourself here: app.everything.diena.co This is a proof of concept reusing the zoomable timeline from my main project called Diena Journal. It's a collaborative and social journal app. More info here: diena.co

I have imported 4 million events from wikipedia to display them on a zoomable timeline

And then there's Swift: "The compiler is unable to type-check this expression in reasonable time; try breaking up the expression into distinct sub-expressions" 😬

couldn't come up with a good implementation for describing a S-shaped curve I had in mind, so I opened up this geometry tool I last used in high school

today i discover the java.sql "ResultSet.wasNull()" API, which tells you whether the last thing you got from the ResultSet is null. Fun pattern where java hands you a landmine and then a tool to defuse it
the following wonky code:
   var eventLabel = resultSet.getString("label")
   if (resultSet.wasNull()) {
      eventLabel = "not found"
   }

it's really hard for me to make a good user interface because i have zero sense of consistency. the struggle is between having zero styling but then it's ugly or adding styling in a hundred different way which is interesting for me but then the app looks like this:
Charlie Conspiracy (Always Sunny in Philidelphia) meme template

Oh yeah I have plenty to discuss!! Nullable types are nice but they don't replace an option type, as you need to define your own if you want to encode Option<Option<T>> (i.e. you cannot write "T??"). Result: only the success value is typed, not the error Thanks for the article, I'll take a look

I'm learning Kotlin & Compose multiplatform. And even if it was tough at start, I'm now enjoying using this toolchain ! Some weirdnesses though, like the absence of Option or typed Result types. And no checked exceptions ? 😶‍🌫️

A collaborative & social journal. It's been a while (2018) since I wanted to build this, but never got around to do it. I mean I did an ugly web prototype, but now I want to do something usable.

I'm usually a lurker on these kind of platforms, only writing a few posts people would qualify as life updates. But 2025 is my year of exploring so I'm going to post more ! This account will talk about technology & my personal project: a memories app I'm building for me, friends & family.
