@cstross @jguillaumes @jlargentaye Leeds University kept some of its DECSystem-10 stuff, or it had last time I was there in 2005. #Leeds #LeedsUniversity
Part 1 (Part 2 on next pic):

An old DEC System 10 console.

Since Mastodon can't do the image recognition - I have to type this.

The DEC-10 computer was installed in Leeds University in 1975 and finally switched off in 1986. It was procured chiefly for undergraduate use (a very unusual idea at that time) and was run by staff from the Department of Computer Studies (an ancestor of the School of Computing). Of those staff, Roger Boyle, Ian Eastwood, Steve Harris and Peter Jesty may still be found lurking in dark corners.

The box in front of you(1) is the machine’s console ~ it was used for booting, and other core system functions. In particular, if the machine developed a fault, the Field Service engineer would diagnose it through interaction with the console’s many switches and buttons — in all probability, he(2) would then mend the fault on site, often with a soldering iron and a board level component.

The machine was a 36-bit architecture with 18-bit addressing. When running, every instruction processed would “set” the appropriate lights on the long display on the console; this was very pretty to watch, but only of value for diagnostic purposes. It was possible (and done!) to enter programs into the machine through the buttons on the console — engineers might do this if absolutely everything else was dead.Cam in front of the PDP-10:

And Part 2 of the writeup:

This cabinet is only the console. The processor cabinets stood alongside and were twice the volume and weighed a ton. The memory took up further space still, much in excess of the processor and console. Bulky peripherals filled the remainder of the machine room.

In its final configuration the machine had 8 exchangeable disk drives, three tape drives, a 6 Megaflop(3) attached floating point array processor, and a front-end multiplexor controlling 60 serial lines. Most days, all 60 lines were in solid use all day.

(1) You are very privileged to be this close. No mortal user, let alone a student was permitted within the same room as the console.

(2) His name was Steve.

(3) Megaflops really was quite a lot."The DEC10 Lab" notice.decsystem10

A Conservative MP wants to identify federal public servants or members of the Canadian Armed Forces who sympathize with the left-wing antifa movement.

Edmonton MP Garnett Genuis has asked federal departments and agencies, as well as the military, if any of their employees are now, or have ever been, members of the decentralized protest movement that stands in opposition to fascist and far-right ideologies.

“Antifa” is not a formal organization, but an umbrella term for political movements that oppose far-right, racist and fascist groups.

Antifa has become a fixation for U.S. President Donald Trump, and a lightning rod for right-wing websites and commentators, who depict the counter-protesters as violent mobs. The administration has controversially declared antifa a domestic terrorist organization, although the designation does not appear to have a basis in U.S. law.

Genuis has asked the Canadian government for a formal response on whether it permits “membership or involvement” with antifa for public servants or members of the CAF, and how many “people active in Antifa activities” Ottawa employs.

The Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan MP also wants to know if any bureaucrats or CAF members have been “disciplined … for Antifa-related activities.”

FCC chair urges broadcasters to commit to daily airing of US national anthem or pledge of allegiance

In a letter to the broadcasters he regulates, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, urged the nation’s privately owned television and radio stations to support the Trump administration’s “celebration of America’s 250th birthday by airing patriotic, pro-America content that celebrates the American journey and inspires its citizens by highlighting the historic accomplishments of this great nation from our founding through the Trump Administration today.”

Among Carr’s idea for such programming, he suggested something more often seen on state television in authoritarian countries: “Starting each broadcast day with the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ or Pledge of Allegiance.”

Another ludicrous canceling of a name from the past

Shaming the dead is an asinine culture warriors’ pastime. Now it’s the great diarist Samuel Pepys’s turn.

Andrew Doyle is the author of “Free Speech and Why It Matters” and “The New Puritans.”

Samuel Pepys was, famously, an extraordinary diarist, offering a vivid first-hand account of life in Restoration England from 1660 to 1669. He was an eyewitness to the Great Fire of London in 1666 and recorded fascinating details of the ravages of the bubonic plague. His diaries were also intensely personal, with entries that echo familiarly across the centuries, whether recounting his rivalries and triumphs in his job as a naval administrator, his frustrations (can’t find a coach in the rain!), his delight in friends or boredom with dull sermons.

I didn't like it when it was a battle of the influencers for more and more likes; I don't like it now that it's become a full-on Nazi bar.

NEW: Reports uncover that almost EVERY agent in
the FBI's Baltimore domestic terrorism squad was
ordered to drop their normal work and go out and
arrest random migrants.

Investigations into pedophiles preying on children
were tossed aside and now only proceed at a
snail's pace.

Does this also apply if we mock Clay Higgins? #ClayHiggins #Religion #Nutjob #SocialMedia #Ban #Internet #MAGA #Idiot #Overreactions
Excretion from Rep. Clay Higgins

@RepClayHiggins
I’m going to use Congressional authority and every influence with big
tech platforms to mandate immediate ban for life of every post or
commenter that belittled the assassination of Charlie Kirk. If they ran
their mouth with their smartass hatred celebrating the heinous murder of
that beautiful young man who dedicated his whole life to delivering
respectful conservative truth into the hearts of liberal enclave
universities, armed only with a Bible and a microphone and a
Constitution... those profiles must come down.

So, I'm going to lean forward in this fight, demanding that big tech have
zero tolerance for violent political hate content, the user to be banned
from ALL PLATFORMS FOREVER. I'm also going after their business
licenses and permitting, their businesses will be blacklisted aggressively,
they should be kicked from every school, and their drivers licenses
should be revoked. I'm basically going to cancel with extreme prejudice
these evil, sick animals who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

I'm starting that today.

That is all.

I dunno who Matt Forney is, but either he's an idiot, or knows full well that the "Reichstag Fire playbook" is when a crisis is used as a pretext to ban parties, mass-arrest opponents, censor the press, and centralise power. #USA #Politics #CharlieKirk […] [Original post on infosec.exchange]
A bunch of tweets from right-wing propaganda bots about Charlie Kirk today. One from Matt Fourney (@Realmattforney) says: Charlie Kirk being assassinated is the American Reichstag fire. It is time for a complete crackdown on the left. Every Democratic politician must be arrested and the party banned under RICO. Every libtard commentator must be shut down. Stochastic terrorism. They caused this.

I think John Mastodon has been writing under a pen-name. #JohnMastodon #Mystery #Mastodon #Books #Fiction #Canada #NovaScotia
The front page of a book called "The Mastodon Mystery" by Dorothy Perkyns, which has a photo of 2 kids standing in front of a shedlike building with two large heffalumps in the background. The back of the Mastodon Mystery book - since Mastodon's picture to text is crap, I will use Microsoft's.

A visit to Norton Museum sparks James's interest in an important local discovery of mastodon bones, but he is even more intrigued by the strange
behaviour of two men and a boy seen in the neighbourhood. When he and his new friend Emily help at the mastodon dig site, events take an unexpected and nwelcome turn, and they realize that the precious bones are in great danger. In heir efforts to avert disaster the two become involved in a series of adventures which take them to unusual, sometimes dangerous, Nova Scotian locations.

ASOUT AUTHOR
Dorothy Perkyns was a teacher in England before coming to Canada in
1969. She began writing in the early seventies, contributing many articles
to Canadian magazines and broadcasting regularly on CBC Radio. Her
work was also published in the United States and in England.

Her first book, The Mystery of the Hemlock Ravine, appeared in 1986, followed by Bilson Award winner Rachel's Revolution (1988), Peril at Plover Point (1991) and Signal Across the Sea (1994). All are available from Lancelot Press.

The author's idea for this novel came from learning of a significant mastodon discovery made in Nova Scotia in the fall of 1991.

Given that Trump is going to get away with breaking international law, and the military is following obviously illegal orders to blow up a ship that they would normally stop, I wonder if that's them testing the waters for using remote lethal force against […] [Original post on infosec.exchange]

Trump says 11 killed in US strike on 'drug-carrying vessel from Venezuela'
Bernd Debusmann Jr
BBC News, White House

President Donald Trump says the US has carried out a strike against a drug-carrying vessel in the southern Caribbean, killing 11 "narcoterrorists".

He posted on social media that Tuesday's US military operation had targeted members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Trump said the vessel was in international waters and was transporting illegal narcotics bound for the US.

The Trump administration has ratcheted up military and political pressure against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in recent weeks, including through a $50m (£37m) reward for information leading to his arrest on drug-trafficking charges. Maduro has vowed Venezuela would fight any attempted US military intervention.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said that US forces had "shot out" a "drug-carrying boat" in the vicinity of Venezuela.
