Record profits for oil refiners. Ongoing climate & affordability crisis for the rest of us. If we had leaders, they would tax these companies and fund the transition.

LNG exports + AI = rising prices

The End of Cheap Gas
Trump’s energy and AI agendas are pushing U.S. gas production to its limits. Unless we change course, the energy affordability crisis will only get worse.

📣 Our new report finds that the Trump admin’s energy + AI “dominance” policies + hostility to renewables will make it even harder for working families to afford their energy bills. Thanks to Trump, the wholesale price of fossil gas could DOUBLE over the next decade, outpacing inflation every year.
Line graph comparing projected nominal average Henry Hub natural gas prices from EIA and Rystad Energy against a 2% inflation baseline from 2025 to 2040.

1/ Here’s a snapshot of tankers currently heading to the U.S. to load up on crude. It took weeks to offload oil already in transit when U.S./Israel attacked Iran. THIS buffered the initial shock. Now that the cushion is gone, the disruption is intensifying. 🧵👇

Trump's Iran debacle may not be your classic oil grab. But if the US wasn't awash in oil and gas, would it be happening?

Fossil fuel stocks are exploding in response to the war on Iran. Who stands to benefit? The richest of the rich. Who stands to lose? All of us who have to pay higher prices for energy and a new round of sellers' inflation.

The IEA has presented its methane emissions abatement cost curve every year since 2017, highlighting the low cost of action. Methane reduction pledges cover 80% of global oil & gas production, but the data shows rising emissions. [Read my Substack here: lornestockman.substack.com/p/voluntary-...

this is a good and interesting analysis. The IEA has said *for years* that the o&g industry is making progress on reducing methane; that methane reductions would pay for themselves (more gas to sell); and that its low hanging fruit. Very little evidence of progress. And industry continues to expand

America's demand for fossil gas is set to increase - no, not for stuff like heating homes or the power grid - but almost entirely due to the fact that sending gas overseas is itself a process that consumes HUGE amounts of gas www.eia.gov/todayinenerg... www.eia.gov/todayinenerg...
Data source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Liquefaction Capacity File, and trade press
Note: Export capacity shown is project's baseload capacity. Online dates of LNG export projects under construction are estimates based on trade press. LNG=liquefied natural gas; FLNG=floating liquefied natural gasIn 2025, we expect increases in demand, which includes domestic natural gas consumption and exports, will exceed increases in supply, which includes domestic natural gas production and imports. Consumption and exports increase by almost 3%, or 3.2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), in our forecast, outpacing the 1.4 Bcf/d growth in production and imports, leading to a 43% increase in the Henry Hub price. In 2026, we expect demand to continue to grow faster than supply, increasing prices by an additional 27%.

Great thread by @ndreschang.bsky.social on the DOE LNG study. The market analysis is a welcome change that shows that LNG increases emissions because it displaces emissions-free energy more than it does coal or gas. This is, after all, the 2020s not the 1990s. The methane analysis? Not so much.

🔑 The DOE analysis ignores the "coal vs. LNG" debate, instead focusing on LNG's market impacts. If this was strategic, it was good strategy. The old guard "emissions displacement" approach was indefensible. And it foregrounds methane estimation Qs that are still the O&G industry's home turf 1/10
