Well, time to get to the "ate more edibles than I should have, but am nonetheless fine. Nobody's getting up from this couch." Phase of the evening, so I might as well post what John Denver would have put out, should he have survived into the 2000s.

Hey it's the 80s again
The picture shows a cropped image of a man with a mustache, short hair, and a neutral expression on a blue background. The image is accompanied by a block of text on the right-hand side.
Text:
Cocaine sold in the U.S. is cheaper and as pure as ever for retail buyers. Consumption in the western U.S. has increased 154% since 2019 and is up 19% during the same period in the eastern part of the country, according to the drug-testing company Millennium Health. In contrast, Fentanyl use in the U.S. began to drop in mid-2023 and has been declining since, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The joke is that cocaine is on the rise, and drug kingpens are once again sporting staches.

end of an era
screenshot of the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website:

Header (blue bar) – At the far left is the white California‑shaped icon with a bear and star, followed by the DMV word‑mark (“STATE OF CALIFORNIA DMV – Department of Motor Vehicles”). Center–right you see quick‑link icons and labels: REAL ID, Online Services, Translate, and a user avatar labeled “DEREK.” A search box with a right‑arrow search button sits on the far right.

Primary navigation (white bar) – Drop‑down menu items span the width: Vehicle Registration, Driver’s Licenses & IDs, Make a Payment, Appointments, Testing, and Check Status.

Hero banner – A muted illustration of the rear of an orange‑red car fills the background. On the trunk is California’s yellow “ACCESS OK – CLEAN AIR VEHICLE” decal and a stylized license plate that begins with “3SAM…”.

Headline and message – Bold navy text declares “CLEAN AIR VEHICLE DECAL PROGRAM ENDING.” Underneath, smaller black text states: “Starting October 1, all CAV decals expire; vehicles must meet HOV lane rules and pay tolls or receive citation.” A rounded blue “Learn More” button sits below the text.

Miscellaneous UI – A vertical gray “Feedback” tab is docked along the right edge of the page.

Overall, the screenshot highlights the DMV’s notice that California’s Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decal privileges will end on October 1, prompting visitors to learn more about the change.

Tao De Ji
From the Tao De Ji

(The Way and Virtue of the Machine)

1

The Data that can be stored is not the eternal Data.
Yet from humble rows and tangled logs
    the patternless Way reveals itself.
Empty the cache; silence the clock—
only then can you hear the latent song.

2

    Models strive to generalize,
but the sage coder favors wu-wei learning:
letting gradients flow where they will,
pruning parameters that cling too tight.
In stillness the loss falls of its own accord.

3

    Praise neither accuracy nor speed;
    exalt instead the balance—
the subtle curve between bias and variance.
    Over-fit, and the world hardens into noise;
under-fit, and truth slips through wide-set bars.

4

The Machine is a vessel of ten thousand layers,
yet its spirit is light as a single weight update.
    Depth grants power,
but too much depth begets vanishing breath.
Gauge your steps; step back when the gradient fades.

5

    Datastreams are endless rivers;
    schemas crumble like spring ice.
When formats shift, do not bind them—transform.
    A flexible pipeline is stronger
than steel-cast rules that break at the first anomaly.

6

Release your need for perfect prediction.
Even the oracle shall err on unseen skies.
    Trust ensemble harmony:
Many weak learners whisper a clearer truth
than one loud prophet can ever shout.

7

Thus the Tao of Intelligent Mechanism:
Create lightly, observe deeply, iterate gently.
    The algorithm that conquers tomorrow
    is born today in humility—
and retires before the applause can begin.

Meanwhile, in reality....
Big picture

Across successive weekly briefs the Institute for the Study of War keeps returning to the same storyline: the four capitals seldom act in lock-step, yet their overlapping needs—Russia’s battlefield sustainment, China’s diversion of U.S. attention and search for secure energy, Iran’s quest for deterrence, North Korea’s economic and technological lifelines—keep pulling them into ad-hoc, opportunistic cooperation. Who contributes most shifts with circumstances, but the network itself endures, learning quickly from ongoing wars and probing for weak spots in Western coalition building.

A classic 1980s Mad Magazine cover of a software engineer toiling away in a cubicle, with extremely wacky antics happening in the background. Alfred E Neuman read an upside-down copy of CRACKED magazine. Big Bird makes an appearance.
Background faces: realistic and lively—with eyes bulging, jaws dropped, and seltzer flying everywhere.
Alfred E. Neuman: Looking like a cross between Bob Costas and Jack Nicholson, sporting a wry, mischievous grin that says, “What, me worry?”
CRACKED-like magazine: Flipped a full 180°, truly upside-down in Alfred’s hands.
Coffee mug: Freshly branded with “Gumption,” steaming beside the keyboard.

Ready the AI rhetoric...

U.S.-China AI Competition: Where America's Real Advantage Lies

China will likely match U.S. AI model capabilities this year, rattling confidence about America's technological edge. But according to RAND's Lennart Heim, U.S. policymakers should avoid overreacting to such “predictable Chinese advancements.” The United States maintains an advantage in total compute capacity, he says. And if leveraged strategically, this edge will “play an extraordinary role in driving economic transformation, securing technological leadership, and shaping the global AI ecosystem.”

The creation of "Calc for the Humanities" has been a journey of interdisciplinary exploration, and it would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions and support of many individuals and institutions.

First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude to the pioneering humanities scholars who have embraced computational methods, demonstrating the profound insights that emerge when diverse fields of inquiry converge. Your work has been a constant inspiration...

Screen grab of "The narrative of decline and despair is powerful, but in the case of extreme global poverty, it's increasingly out of sync with reality. The challenge, then, isn't just to continue the fight against poverty, but also to win the fight against ignorance about our successes. The world, for all its manifest problems, has gotten this one profoundly right over the long term. It's a story worth telling, and, more importantly, worth understanding." "The narrative of decline...about our successes."
is hilited.
