Just begun re-reading Groucho Marx's "Memoirs Of A Mangy Lover" for the first time in over 50 years. Published in 1963, I am startled by its opening paragraph that suddenly seems madly contemporary.

From probably my first TV appearance. 1977 with Mark P(erry). We were doing Sniffin' Glue punk fanzine at the time. Hippest thing on the scene. We were old school pals suddenly having a high old time suddenly being feted as scene setters.

Jeffrey Archer, who I knew and really liked, made up huge swaths of his academic life and achievements. Even styled out his prison era. He is being now portrayed as an endearing rascal. Except. Wasn't there a fantasist recently who was hounded to the grave for just such lies?

Tasteless though it may be, every time I see the guy at the centre of the Anne Widdecombe accusations he looks to me like Walter Becker from Steely Dan.

In the early 90s video was the new big thing and football used to just put out things like 50 Great Goals or 10 Great Matches! I said on air that fans wanted the opposite of this and thus a brand was born.

In 1973 Marc Bolan used to come into the record shop I worked in. One day and I asked him to sign his latest single for me. I only had a red pen. Playfully, he signed on the red part of the sleeve. But it's there. Says, "Hello Danny. Be Good..."

I knew Esther Rantzen pretty well. Always good gossipy company, smart as a whip, could rock a high end fragrance too. Told me she wrote lyrics to Belle Of The Ball at university - at the time it was my radio shows theme tune. Sang it for us on the air. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FRI...

In 1973, on the advice of my mate Tom, I went to see a band at the Marquee in London. It remains the greatest gig I have ever seen in my life. On their way up the AWB were phenomenal, breathtaking. We just have the studio recordings now, but OH!: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTQA...

Anyone remember the great Eclipse ceremonies from the late 70s? Whenever it occurred, Bowie had to walk in front of Bolan, Bryan Ferry shaded Eno, Lionel Richie blanked the Commodores and most controversially, McCartney showed Lennon his arse. Different times.

I'm all for Eclipses. Dark Side Of The Moon has no big finish without one. But that was a bit underwhelming. Like when you are on a sun bed abroad and when a tiny cloud momentarily floats over, say, "Oh the suns gone in..."

Ten years ago an old bore, whenever a celebrity version of a show was announced, would say "Never heard of any of them!" It is a fairly legitimate claim now. TV has defenestrated itself of favourites. Warhol breve magnum.

My son was out in Soho today and saw a copy of the punk fanzine I was involved in 1977. £100! We put ourselves on the cover after CBS withdrew permission to feature Clash. See also me and Mark on TV at the time with not much idea what we were doing...but neither did anyone!
