Now spinning: "Baby Driver" soundtrack, Various Artists (2017) Let's overlook the casting of the ghastly Spacey, and revel in an awesome selection of tunes. I think the music works so well in the movie because Edgar Wright chose the music first, and then constructed scenes around the songs.

12” black vinyl LP of “Baby Driver - Music From the Motion Picture” on an ION turntable, and side-by-side with the outer sleeve.

My 9 Albums - was quite hard to pick a representative selection of 9 albums that significantly influenced my tastes. Dark Side of the Moon, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, American Heartbeat, Master of Puppets, & Seconds Out all just missed the cut. Not necessarily best or even favourite, but influential

"The Mouths of Madness" by Orchid (2013) Finally got my hands on a vinyl version of this outstanding doom metal album! I've loved it since release, but vinyl copies have been expensive/hard to get. Now, I can enjoy the striking artwork on the gatefold sleeve, and listen as nature intended.

The sales profile of “Mr Brightside” is extremely weird. It is the biggest selling single *never* to be No.1. The song entered the charts at No.10, and that is the *only* week it has ever been in the Top 10. It has then hung around in the lower reaches of the Top 100 for a further 519 weeks!

010

Lord Corwyn @lordcorwyn.bsky.social · 28/08/2026

The Killers' "Mr Brightside" has now spent 10 frikkin' years in the UK charts! A record 520 non-consecutive weeks in the Top 100 in the official UK singles chart. No other song has spent even 5 yrs in the Top 100. And similar if lesser record-breaking runs in US Billboard + other national charts.

Still from the second video for the Killers' song "Mr Brightside". This is from the colour video, based on the movie "Moulin Rouge".

For clarity, the thing linking the records is not trivial, musically it is quite important.

Lord Corwyn @lordcorwyn.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

For today’s themed playlist, I’m setting you a puzzle. All the records shown here that I’m playing today have something in common that links them. First person to correctly identify the link wins 50 Smugness Points (TM). Most amusing wrong answer wins 25 Smugness Points. Have fun!

Six outer sleeves/covers of vinyl records, arranged in 2 rows of 3, as follows:

Top row, L to R:
AC/DC: “Highway to Hell” (1979)
Bryan Adams: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” 12” single (1981)
Boomtown Rats: “A Tonic for the Troops” (1978)

Bottom row, L to R:
Def Leppard: “Hysteria” (1987)
Foreigner: “4” (1981)
Muse: “Drones” (2015)

Now spinning: "The Gathering" by Testament (1999). Testament's 8th album thrillingly straddles the line between thrash and death metal, and was widely seen as a return to form. Pictured is the 2018 remaster/reissue on silver vinyl. And that concludes our Day of Thrash!

Oddly, I have two other albums that share the title, "British Steel", both are metal compilations: 1) "British Steel: England's Latest Heavy Metal Invasion" (1984) 2) "British Steel: The Rising Force of British Heavy Metal" (2017)

Two side-by-side album covers for vinyl LPs showing the front of the sleeve:

On the right: "British Steel: England's Latest Heavy Metal Invasion" (1984). Background is a Union Flag (a.k.a. Union Jack).

On the left: "British Steel: The Rising Force of British Heavy Metal" (2017). Background is a torso and arm of a Knight in full plate armour.

Of course, I'm sure it's perfectly normal for the director of the CIA to be coordinating with a foreign Intelligence service that is publicly actively helping Iran to target and kill US service personnel. And not treasonous at all. Nothing to see here.
