Pelegrina tillandsiae, a salticid species so named because they live their entire lives in Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides). A fellow naturalist in Georgia introduced me to these pale children today. We love a highly specialized creature 🤍 #EmotionalSupportSpood 🧪

Tanager of the Day: Western Tanager 📷 Simon Boivin
Bird perched on a branch, photo, description from ebird: ‘Breeding males are stunning bright yellow with a black back and red head. Females and immature males are duller, sometimes mostly grayish with just faint yellow on the face and undertail coverts. Always note two white wingbars and pale bill. Breeds mainly in coniferous or mixed forests at middle or high elevations. Winters as far south as Central America, where it can be found in any forested habitat. Often stays high in the canopy. Listen for male’s burry song in the spring and summer and short, rising rattle year-round.’

pt 5. last one, i need to get back to work a bat, a flying mammal, and a palaeodictyopteran, an extinct "six-winged" flying insect from the paleozoic
a badly drawn bat that's halfway between a bat signal and zubat from pokemon vs a reasonable drawing of an insect with four big wings and two stubby wing-like projections behind its eyes, and two tail-like thingies in the butt similar to zubat's

My first paper is officially out in @currentbiology.bsky.social ! We found that snake embryos coil due to a mismatch in growth rates between the gut and spine. This tight coil is one of the reasons why snakes are able to get so long. Read the paper here!

I heard bluesky launched video upgrades this week?? Let’s talk about how sometimes being a scientist is observing something you can’t explain, trying to figure out what the heck is going on, then still having no idea what’s going on, and just enjoying the process of learning as you go.

Some tiny “pill millipedes” from Tennessee. On the right is an Onomeris, a member of order Glomerida, all of which are adapted to roll into spheres. Left is Desmonus earlei, a modified polydesmidan “flat-backed” millipede. Several polydesmidan families have independently adapted a volvating form.
two brown millipedes are curled tightly into spheres. the left one is bumpy and paler, and the right one is darker brown, smooth, and shiny

Here are two of the four new species of moss-camouflaged frogs we just described in the journal Salamandra: Spinomantis fohitstilo and S. chlorostictus! The article is OA, available here: www.salamandra-journal.com/salamandra/6... 🧪🐸
Spinomantis fohistilo, a mossy-looking frog with big finger and toe pads, green and brown patterning above, and rather white flanks. The legs have a series of little white spines, which are the source of the name, which means white spines in Malagasy. A brown frog with a two-toned eye, and little green splotches over its back. Those green splotches are the source of the name, which is of Greek derivation. This one is quite smooth without fringes or spines, but still has well expanded finger and toe tips.
