For me, there isn't a definitive starting point. The beauty with Looney Tunes is that everybody has their own preferences, so it's best to take it at your own pace and form your own experience. Experiment with characters, directors, even decades. In this way, random, DVD/Blu-rays are ideal. [1/2]

The RNG for my pre-movie short landed on this one, so I may as well throw my hat into the ring. High Diving Hare is pretty hard to beat, but this is a solid contender for Sam's SECOND best cartoon, for me.

A ★★★★½ review of From Hare to Heir (1960)
Forcing Sam not to shoot his mouth off might be the most ingenious character usage that the original run of shorts ever thought up. Perfectly cast and well-timed too, as Mel Blanc's car accident would...

The new Shaun the Sheep is an absolute delight. It doesn't have the emotional draw of the previous films, instead going for pure zaniness, but it's incredibly funny and one of Aardman's best looking films to date. I'm impressed how their animation continues to improve.

A ★★★★ review of Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (2026)
Aardman are no strangers to horror parodies (Were-Rabbit is my personal pick for their greatest film), and so it made sense to follow up Shaun's sci-fi homage by lampooning this genre next. It doesn't...

One of my all-time favourite cartoons, and one I actually reviewed about a year ago. Tashlin really knew how to work with genres to make a seven-minute slapstick short feel like so much more.

A ★★★★★ review of Plane Daffy (1944)
Quite possibly my favourite war propaganda cartoon, as well as one of Warner's more explicitly adult, featuring several on-screen suicides, drugging, heavy drinking, Nazis and cartoonishly sexualised ...

I find it funny how my favourite characters are almost always the ones I would find insufferable in reality. Narcissists, hair-trigger tempers, cowards, etc. I guess I just love conflict/misery in my stories. (On another note, I really should do a thread of my favourites, at some point.)

After last week's "favourite Looney Tunes joke" trend, I began thinking about what I'd consider my favourite from Tom and Jerry. It's nearly impossible to choose but this bit from The Missing Mouse is certainly up there.

While I prefer Komiya's more curmudgeonly performance, Inou absolutely nailed that volatile contrast between Ran's two halves. The lower audio quality helps. It gives her outbursts that much more of a monstrous impression.

I don't know what's funnier. The sound effect of the door swing or those superbly demented expressions when Ataru's being electrocuted.

Not necessarily a good soundtrack, but the most unique I've ever seen, comes from Looney Tunes Racing. Instead of full tracks, it's a selection of brief music cues that play at set moments (going downhill, hitting a boost pad, etc). An ingenious use of the license, albeit a tad annoying in practise.

This is one of the funniest sound effects I've ever heard.

That being said, this bit from 'Herman the Catoonist' might be the most violent overall. Decapitation is something Tom and Jerry would merely hint at. But nothing's off-limits to Famous Studios.

Been watching through Herman & Katnip, and this mallet gag from 'Of Mice and Magic' is the most barbaric so far. Katnip's head isn't just flattened, it's completely embedded into the table.

In honour of Foghorn's 80th, here's a clip from 'Sock a Doodle Do' (perhaps my favourite of his cartoons). It works purely from how well McKimson's pre-shutdown animators could land a wallop. Each punch looks so painful and yet so bouncy. There's such a wild energy to it.

A little late to Friz Freleng's birthday, but I want to put my appreciation out there. Gifted with an incredible sense of musical timing, he's the least ambitious of the WB directors but arguably the one I find the funniest. When I just want to laugh myself to tears, I put on a Freleng.

#1 - Operation: Rabbit (1952) Not just the best Coyote cartoon, but one of the best cartoons PERIOD. Densely packed with hilarious gags. The character work is outstanding. Wile E. isn't dumb, just arrogantly underestimating. He's a refreshing antagonist for Bugs to play off of.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
#2 - There They Go-Go-Go! (1956) A highly charming (though lengthy) opening leads into the greatest repertoire of gags in the Road Runner's history. Blasting through each scene at such a breakneck speed results in the punchlines seeming even more aggressive and brutal than usual.
1144
Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
#3 - Rabbit’s Feat (1960) Jones' return to Bugs' screwball roots, making him the perfect foil for the overly logical Coyote. Mostly a winner for the organised mania of the rifle scene, detailing both ends of the barrel to make the payoff's impossible subversion land even harder.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
#4 - Gee Whiz-z-z-z-z-z-z (1956) Definitely a standout for Philip DeGuard's famously surreal depictions of the Southwest desert. What is already one of the series' greatest gag lineups doubles as an excuse to show off the strong uses of pinks and yellows within the backgrounds.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
#5 - Fast and Furry-ous (1949) Not the funniest Road Runner, taking a little time to find its footing. But there's something about the zanier animation and score that keeps me coming back. This is best demonstrated via Wile E.'s homemade ski contraption (the most fun gag in the series).

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
#6 - Zipping Along (1953) This one places less emphasis on characterisation, in favour of brute forcing through a set of punchy jokes. A short where even the weaker moments still manage to get a howl out of me. The simple yet subversively illogical seesaw gag winds up being the best.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
#7 - Whoa, Be-Gone! (1958) This could just be the trampoline and tightrope gags, and it'd still land in my top ten. Two of my favourite Road Runner moments that escalate wonderfully. The latter is the most baffling trap in the series. Destined to fail, but does so in the most unexpected way.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
#8 - To Beep or Not to Beep (1963) I used to be less enthusiastic on this one, but it's really grown on me over time. Assembling all the strongest material from the unsold pilot makes for a tight package of winners. It helps that this includes the famous catapult montage. Escalation at its finest.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
#9 - Beep, Beep (1952) Proving the Road Runner formula wasn't a one-time fluke, with stronger gags than its predecessor. Includes the best of the minimalistic chase sequences. All Jones needs are a set of coloured lights to represent the characters, and he can make even those physically expressive.

Tappie @looniesttunes.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
#10 - Stop! Look! And Hasten! (1954) By this point, Jones begins experimenting with the format. Trains punchlines were so familiar that all you needed to visualise them was a minimalist headlight. Superb layouts here by Maurice Noble, playing around with the vast depth of the canyons for this chase.

At the start of this year, I also reviewed and ranked the Gene Deitch Tom & Jerry cartoons. Truthfully, I'm very indecisive about these ratings. I fully agree with the reviews but may need to update or reconsider some of the scores. I could never decide on what to actually give half of them.

Over the last three months, I have slowly reviewed and ranked every single Wile E. cartoon, in preperation for Coyote vs. Acme. These rankings are more of a rough guide, since even I'm not 100% sure on some of the placements/scores I gave out.

R.I.P. Bill Oddie. Each of the Goodies brought their own strengths to the show, and Bill definitely supplied their spontaneous energy. His finest hour is this violently madcap song that pushes just how far a live-action cartoon can be taken. (1/2)

With Volume 3 of the Collector's Vault just announced as greenlit, here's my wishlist. A combination of obvious inclusions, personal wants and general guesses. With how little is left from the 40s and 50s (mostly Tweetys), I'm intrigued in how later releases are gonna go.

Happy 20th anniversary to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, one of the most imaginative, experimental and fascinating shows I've seen. Its 2nd OP (Super Driver) is easily a top 5 of mine. Stylised, colourful, loaded with personality and a lot of fun.

Because I am surrounded by wonderful friends who love me and nourish my animation love, I was reminded of Koji Nanke's animation for the Urusei Yatsura OPs and EDs. Have spent the better half of today repeatedly watching this over and over again from ED 2; textbook definition of charm and appeal

Love the sketchy, expressive style of this show. Potentially my favourite look for the characters in a while. Typically, when a style is changed so drastically, you risk losing the core personalities (like Jones' shorts, despite still enjoying their look) but these naturally feel like Tom and Jerry.

R.I.P. to the great Ted Nichols, whose iconic music was always a highlight in every show he worked on. While I love his work on Scooby-Doo, the soundtrack for Dastardly & Muttley undoubtedly stands my favourite of his stuff.

Here is my favourite scene in all of comedy, courtesy of Always Sunny. Masterfully written and performed. Not one of the actors feels overshadowed, all getting equal moments to shine. You can look at any of them at any point and they're always be doing or saying something funny.

I think the night school sequence in 'Beautiful Dreamer' stands as my favourite looking scene in Urusei Yatsura. A perfect mix of humour, mystery and surrealism. Not only is the lighting gorgeously done but it obscures the setting in a way that makes the mayhem feel even more claustrophobic.

#12 - Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean (Guess) Wrapping up with my favourite special. There's an ingeniousness to Bean's silliness and this one has some of his most inventive gags. Above all, Howard Goodall's score steals the show, bringing that sad, melancholic side of Christmas. [2/2]

WOW! What a line up! This is such a huge improvement over the already great V1 and I can't wait to get my hands on every short here. They've really gone above and beyond with the new restorations, too. Finally, Daffy Duckaroo won't look like a cow chewed it up and spat it out.

#11 - One Ham's Family (Tex Avery) An overlooked Avery Christmas classic. There isn't even a remote attempt at warmth here, letting the fast-paced mayhem take centre stage with the usual array of slapstick, wisecracks and fourth wall breaks.

Urusei Yatsura's art director are so fancinating to me. Its one of the only anime's I can say its compareable to Looney Tunes or post sequal Spongebob, where whenever this director shows you get a diffrent experience out of not just story/humor but also their art style.

#10 - The House of Mendou - Summer Xmas (Urusei Yatsura) An excellent gathering of the dysfunctional ensemble cast, with a race up a giant Christmas tree letting them all go nuts. It's an episode that just keeps building and building until its completely bonkers climax. [1/2]

#9 - A Very Sunny Christmas (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) Without a doubt, one of the show's best, with one classic moment after another. Here's the iconic scene, featuring an incredible escalation. Dennis' "Jesus Christ" may be the single funniest delivery in the show.

#8 - The Nutcracker (Courage the Cowardly Dog) I'm a sucker for classical music, so this was always going to appeal to me. The offbeat compositions, alongside the blending of a festive ballet with a dilapidated junkyard, gives this episode a particularly memorable identity.
