I can understand the appeal to scrap the Environment Agency - not for cost reasons but simply because they have been so ineffective, especially regarding water pollution. But we would need to replace them with an agency with more teeth and resources- likely to cost more not less. #r4today

@carolinelucas.bsky.social was a leader who led with environmental principles and applied it to wider policy. Polanski would do well to remember such sound foundations after today’s misstep. #GreenPartyConference

It wasn’t mentioned at the Labour Conference, but given Burnham‘s love of devolution, I think the chances of merging police forces has probably gone back a step or two. #bbclaurak #bbcbh

Burnham says we must not be “in hock” to the Bond markets. But as France and UK governments are finding, if they do not impose fiscal discipline on themselves, then the Bond markets will do it for them. #r4today

The only way to launch a national care service is to have a new National tax, or to hike and hypothecate an existing one. Like income tax. No tinkering with the deckchairs of HMS Triple Lock will do it #bbcpm

We must put our trust in Healey. Because Burnham’s “growth in every postcode” is absurd (which nation has ever achieved that?). His social care plan has no funding, certainly not from triple lock savings. Healey is going to have to find growth. He knows fine words butter nothing. #r4today

Burnham’s Conference halo has soon slipped away. Yesterday, he suggested his flagship national care service might actually not happen until well into the 2030s. And that any triple lock savings wouldn’t pay for it for a long time. He has returned from Merseyside. And so has hard reality. #c4news

10yr gilt yields touched 5.5% for a while today - haven't seen that for nearly twenty years. 30 year gilt rising to 6% - so going up and both ends of the curve. Bond markets have so little faith in interest rates coming down anytime soon - instead, oil & inflation is going to drive them up. #bbcpm

I was on what used to be called “schoolboy forms” with Chelsea back in the 1980s for a couple of years. Lots of training, long journeys, leaving school early just to get down to Stamford Bridge by public transport. But I didn’t regret a moment - this guy’s story isn’t everyone’s. #wato

Importantly, Governor, the large amount of money going into AI is built on borrowing at very attractive yields for lenders. That makes Government bonds less attractive in comparison, driving the yield up to compete. #r4today

Burnham clearly stated his vision for UK - such as greater value placed on state control of national assets like water and housing. So based on that, why didn’t he simply commit to show Palantir the door, and retain control of NHS data? #r4today

The thirst for data centres is driving up government borrowing, which in turn, reduces fiscal headroom and cash for so-called “breathing space”. The business case for building energy production and transmission is likely far higher than energy consuming data centres. #r4today

The buy-to-let property market is dying, as capital gains from rising property prices flatten, interest rates remain high and regulations get tighter. More individual landlords will leave, selling mostly to the big corporate landlords. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Burnham. #r4today

We already have an army of c.6m unpaid carers trying to provide care at home for those who need it. And there are huge gaps in our success to do that, especially during the night. Will this new care service target the biggest gaps in current care? Because the Scottish model doesn’t. #r4today

The removal of VAT from domestic energy bills got a standing ovation today. A saving of £45 off the average bill. That will be dwarfed by the price cap increase in January 2027, predicted to be between three and NINE times that amount. 🧐 #c4news

One thing we do now know from today is that Burnham has ditched any hope of Dilnot care recommendations being implemented. In April 2024, in opposition, Labour backed it. But Reeves abandoned it once in office in July 2024. Burnham has no appetite for it - he spoke only of personal care. #c4news

When my mother-in-law came to live with us, what we couldn't safely provide was care through the night. So she moved into a residential care home. If today's free personal care plan follows Scotland's model, that wouldn't change. It pays for scheduled care visits, not someone at 3am. #bbcpm

It was very good to hear Burnham's commitment to improving grid connections for both domestic and commercial needs today. It will be important that the priorities for this are fair though - data centres will lobby to be at the front of the queue, as they represent billions of investment. #bbcpm

Burnham is true to his word - he gave a clear direction for his vision of a new Britain. And some very positive and honest descriptions of what needs to change. What he has not said, of course, is how this is going to be funded. Today, we saw half the side of the coin. #bbcpm #LabourPartyConference

A bit rich for Burnham to say that we (Labour Party) rescued the country and rebuilt Britain after the war. Atlee's government fell in 1951, the country still with rationing, and a weary public desperate for hope. Labour spent the next 13 yrs in opposition. #LabourPartyConference #wato #bbcpm

No one will argue with Burnham facing up to proper social care – and paying for it. Good to see it front and centre. 👍 But it's knotted into councils, the NHS, the triple lock, govt debt, 2024 manifesto promises… to name a few. Easy to champion. Much harder to untangle. Good luck, Andy. #wato
