Catch Me If You Can 9/10 A very high 8 or low 9. Incredible story told with absolutely solid filmmaking and fantastic actors. I can't imagine these real events being told much better. #filmsky

The boring answer is probably Zombie Island, the zombie faces were probably the most detailed and scary I'd seen up to that point, the silly answer is that I was pretty unsettled by the moving Mona Lisa in Elmo Goes Boo when I was real young.

Hellboy 6/10 I love the world and characters and art direction of this film, but it falls into the common superhero movie pitfalls of a somewhat generic plot and weightless action. Worth watching for sure, but I think Constantine tackled similar ideas in a more interesting way. #filmsky

Mystery Train 7/10 I'm not sure if this is really my kind of movie, It's a bit too slow paced and thematically light for my taste, but the performances and filmmaking are very compelling, and one specific decision to foreshadow a plot point in the third segment through the first two was very clever.

Road to Singapore (1940) 3/10 A relatively light fun little musical comedy of it's era. I would've given it a 5 or so if not for the orientalism and brownface. Certainly there are more racist films from the time and I'm interested enough to continue with the series, but it's kind of a tough watch.

The People Under The Stairs 7/10 another film that's right on the edge of 6 and 7. Today I'm tentatively going more positive because the direction and acting are really great, but I feel the pacing could be stronger. #filmsky

Forbidden Zone 6/10 Is this movie good? no idea. It's a burst of unfiltered creative instinct, and naturally a lot of it has aged quite poorly but I find it very compelling as an Oingo Boingo fan and honestly really creatively invigorating as an artist. like, wow, you really can just film whatever.

This movie has a scene of two dudes exploding a bunch of vampires with holy water guns while Ballroom Blitz plays. and I felt virtually nothing. how the fuck do you do that what the hell. watch From Dusk Til Dawn and The Lost Boys for sick 90s vampires you will get so much more out of them.

Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood 4/10 Was not expecting as much of a step down from Demon Knight. Still some fun ideas and special effects, but the jokes were a real mixed bag, the acting and editing were often poor enough to totally drain a scene of life. much like a uh zombie idk

So much bad happening but this movie not only coming out but also making its money back in spite of the efforts of ghouls to kill it… nice to have the little reminders that communities will fight for art

Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight 6/10 Really fun horror/action/comedy. A lot of familiar beats but lots of fun moments with a great cast of character actors. Billy Zane in particular completely steals the show, nails every line. #filmsky

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 6/10 If my last review was between a 6 and 7, this is between a 5 and 6. I like a lot of the concepts but the execution is very sloppy. great direction and visuals at points but some dialogue and plot points that I consider outright bad. #filmsky

Spider-Man: Brand New Day 6/10 Saw in a double feature with Coyote vs Acme and while I think they're both quite good, BND is working with a genre formula that's more consistently entertaining in the moment, but doesn't do much new and has a big "icebox logic" problem.

Coyote vs Acme 6/10 I think the concept of this film, analyzing Coyote's endless struggle in a courtroom comedy, is the best cartoon-meets-live-action plot since, like, Roger Rabbit. There are too many wonky visuals and stock plot points to give higher than a 6 or 7 but I love what this tries to do.

Thir13en Ghosts (cont.) Its just disappointing to see some good ideas buried under stock characters, messy direction and paper thin writing. It doesn't know if it wants to be horror or action or pulp or dramatic, and it's tones come together quite rarely. At least I like Matthew Lillard in this.

Thir13en Ghosts (2001) 4/10 A LOW 4. Was really hoping for more given the fun ghost designs. The set design has some real strengths but the house is too cramped and repetitive, I don't think the claustrophobic atmosphere is worth the lack of visual variety. #filmsky

Escape From New York 6/10 Not bad, but definitely a weaker John Carpenter movie. It's got a great cast and some fun setpieces, but overall it's just not as imaginative, characterful or fleshed out in the specific details as most of his other work.

Mystery Men 5/10 May change to a 4. A lot of fun ideas and character concepts in this one, but I think the execution is really muddled. Ben Stiller's character in particular is deeply unlikable and about half the others feel underdeveloped. #filmsky

Legend of the Sacred Stone 7/10 This is a mix of puppetry and cgi and fantasy and Shaw brother-style action. I have issues with the plot structure as the 25 minute prologue introduces a villain that isn't dealt with by the end but this movie is like nothing I've seen before. #filmsky

Eating Raoul 6/10 Another cult classic that I'm unfortunately similarly lukewarm on. There's some fun stuff here, I like all the actors, I'm sure it was more shocking at the time and it was clearly made on a tight budget, there's just not much here that made me laugh out loud or anything. #filmsky

like i don't disagree with anything this movie's saying about toxic nostalgia, there are scenes that I like, but it's self referential to the point where I feel like the scene with Planktons cousins. we're doing the phone scene again? we're doing the house again? ALRIGHT I GET IT! #filmsky

this movie is fucking exhausting. struggles to find a tone in a way the original never did, characters are more reserved in their characterization but somehow less believable in their actions. makes references that were dated before it's fucking release (can we STFU about The Last Jedi oh my god)

Scream (2022) 3/10 listen, the filmmakers here were given an impossible task, making a reboot/sequel to a franchise defined by its subversiveness in an era defined by self-referential nostalgia and pop culture backlash. everything they did here makes sense and Idk if I could have done better. but...

Scream 8/10 I think it speaks to the strengths of this film that I knew 2 of the 3 things about the killer's identity, but that last unknown had me guessing until the very last moment. Just like Halloween, some elements that are cliche by todays standards, but perfectly executed. #filmsky

Brazil (rewatch) 9/10 what an absolute powerhouse of visual design and creativity. I think I personally prefer Fear and Loathing, I find that one easier to rewatch, but this is almost certainly Terry Gilliam's best work.

Like, the hook is about three over the top actors being put in a more grounded and dangerous situation than they know, what does an invisible swordsman or singing horses or a medieval torture dungeon have to do with the setting or premise? These scenes can be funny in a vacuum but do they fit here?

Three Amigos 5/10 Worth a watch, as it stars three very funny talented people, but it's also clear to me that film runs out of steam around the 45 minute mark. Once the initial misunderstanding is resolved, the central premise is exhausted and the rest of the movie feels very scattered.

Man Made Monster (1941) 5/10 It's pretty standard for the time. Lon Chaney Jr brings some great pathos to a character that's in such a ridiculous scenario. I also like that the doctor murdering his partner is accidental, like that's a bit of humanity for who's otherwise an evil cartoon character.

Face/Off (1997) 4/10 A low four. Some fun ideas here that could be expanded upon in a reboot that will probably happen, but as is it's too long to be an exciting action romp and way too stupid and poorly thought out to be a compelling character study.

Darkman (1990) 6/10 really thoroughly enjoyable. You can see the budget limitations, and I don't feel that the "operating in the dark" element of his abilities is explored enough for him to be called Darkman, but it has a lot of fun style to it.
