i wonder if in other EU countries you can directly draw rights from directives with expired deadlines to them. that's how it works in the netherlands. also individuals who have been harmed by the non-transpositon of EU directive can claim damages from their government

i think one of the things that make tokusatsu shows very compelling to me is that toei employs cadre of stunt people who collectively have centuries of experience in throwing themselves at the ground in interesting ways. one shouldn't underestimate the value of a good fall

it's not quite true that you can be a church without knowing it, you have to actively want to identify as one to qualify, but it's still funny to me that you can be shrodinger's church until someone tries to take you to court
000
LoftyWords @loftywords.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
you can be a church without knowing for sure if you qualify as one, and you can assume you're a church while not being one in reality. this is why some religious community choose to register themselves as foundations or associations (2:3 Bw) instead
100
LoftyWords @loftywords.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
whether churches have legal personality as churches in the netherlands is apparently up for a judge to decide if there's ever disagreement. there's no way you can register yourself as a church somewhere and no formal criteria for what makes one a "church community" in the sense of 2:2 sub 1 Bw

i should start referring to things as "my precious abstraction"
My precious abstraction, the technique powering my own research at the time, had not been developed to analyze fossils, or to pursue the idealized pleasure of mathematics.

Factor analyisis had been invented for a social use contrary to my beliefs and values. I felt personally offended, and this book, though not written until some ten years later, ultimately arose from this insight and feeling of violation.

potential top 10 funniest contra legem readings in history
Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) states that any European country that respects the principles of the EU may apply to join. While Canada is geographically located in North America, the EU has stated that the interpretation of this criterion is "subject to political assessment" based on additional factors such as culture or political terms,[63] by the Commission and the European Council. Example for these interpretations subject to political assessment of the Commission and the European Council is Turkey with its European part that accounts for only 3 percent of its entire territory.[64]

today i learned john dupre is still publishing papers. the book of his i read and really liked was published in 2002. man was born in 1952 and is still at it, somehow (attached: a favourite quote --i love the phrase "thouroughly unilluminating")
3. How Much Must Evolution Explain?
Imagine you are an alien watching a cocktail party with a human social scientist. You ask: why are all these people in this room? The reply comes back: the human species evolved a gene for the metabolism of ethanol. They have all come here to consume ethanol, and eventually they will all go home and, more or less successfully, metabolize it. It is
of course true that the evolution of this capacity is a necessary condition for cocktail parties as we know them. So we might even say that the evolutionary observation is, in some sense, part of the full explanation of the phenomenon in question. But it is not a very illuminating part. It is thoroughly unilluminating by comparison to the information that these are all members of the Tunbridge Wells Bridge Club, and this is the Annual General Meeting. The point so far is just that everything we do is something that we have evolved the capacity to do. But the existence of such an evolved capacity may be thoroughly uninformative as to why, when, or even whether we actually exercise that capacity.

abstractions? nothing against them. a lot of my favourite concepts are abstractions, like money, graphical user interfaces and worker's rights. but i hate it when people use them to argue that in they would be vindicated in the perfect dollhouse reality they assumed for the sake of argument
Let me lay out in summary the four assumptions I shall make. We are to
imagine a society with (1) democratic institutions in reasonably good working order, including a representative legislature elected on the basis of universal adult suffrage; (2) a set of judicial institutions, again in reasonably good order, set up on a nonrepresentative basis to hear individual lawsuits, settle disputes, and uphold the rule of law; (3) a commitment on the part of most members of the society and most of its officials to the idea of individual and minority rights; and (4) persisting, substantial, and good faith disagreement about rights (i.e., about what the commitment to rights actually amounts to and what its implications are) among the members of the society who are committed to the idea of rights.

tapping the sign
If a case such as Tunnel or Bridge were to occur in the real world, there would surely be an enraged public outcry against the railway system. The question whether one died or five died would be (and should be) of
far less importance to the protesters than the fact that a runaway train had caused death. If it were further to
come to light that the choice of who died had been at the mercy of a mere bystander, acting solely on his or
her moral intuitions, this would only be further ground for public outrage. Relatively little attention would (or should) be paid to whether the bystander had chosen the death of one or the death of ve. The protesters, in other words, would—and rightly so—care far less about the question that obsessively concerns the trolley problem philosophers than about relevant facts that these philosophers have lightheartedly stipulated away.

really annoyed when philosophers assume that a posteriori knowledge of an issue can only distract you from forming the correct opinion about it as though the most reliable method for drawing normative consclusions is one where you disregard particulars and empirical reality as mere distractions
But I want to take off some of the flesh and boil down the normative argument to its bare bones so that we can look directly at judicial review and see what it is premised on.
