That's the playbook. Do all the nasty stuff & shrink the economy at the beginning of the term then pretend to care enough to create a marginal surplus and maybe throw a bit of what they took away back to PAYE-payers just befor the election to make it look like things are improving. Rinse and repeat

RW goals to increase productivity: low wages, longer hours, fewer holidays, deregulation (poor materials, more workplace safety risks, raised speed limits, ignored environmental protections) LW goals: adequate govt funding for skills and tertiary training, technology R&D, cheap energy (solar/wind)
