The £61 million Community Right to Buy Fund is a welcome move to help save our spaces. However, we know demand will far outstrip the money available, so this needs to be the start of an ambitious step change for community ownership.
Quote from Ed Wallis “The announcement of the £61 million Community Right to Buy Fund is a welcome move to help save our spaces and improve our communities – because rights without resources aren’t really rights. So this fund is an important step forward.

“However, we know demand will far outstrip the money available, so this needs to be the start of an ambitious step change for community ownership.

"With Power to Change, supported by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, we’ve developed a detailed plan for how government can drive co-ordinated long-term investment, which we’ll be publishing in the coming weeks. We look forward to working with the Secretary of State, alongside funders and social investors, to make sure this money has maximum impact. With the right support, communities can transform their local area, and make a real difference to people’s lives.”

We welcome the inclusion of the Right to Buy for communities in the #EnglishDevolutionBill. However, for every neighbourhood to reap the rewards, especially more disadvantaged areas, it must be backed by proper govt funding. Read more on the Community Right to Buy: locality.org.uk/what-is-comm...
Locality CEO Tony Armstrong on the English Devolution Bill: “The inclusion of the Right to Buy for communities in the English Devolution Bill deserves to be celebrated. This is a significant step forward for community power - something we’ve been campaigning on for many years.
However, communities need resources to make the most of their rights. In recent years, the Community Ownership Fund has been vital in helping to save hundreds of community hubs, pubs, and clubs. With the fund now ended, there is no dedicated support available from government for communities looking to take on valued assets.
For every neighbourhood to be able to reap the rewards of the Right to Buy – especially in more disadvantaged areas – it must be backed with proper resources.”

Locality CEO Tony Armstrong responds to the #SpendingReview: “It's disappointing to see the absence of funding for community ownership. Renewal can only happen with direct involvement of local people. Govt must set out a clear way forward on how to put community power at the top of the agenda.”
“We welcome the Chancellor’s investment in health, housing
and local growth initiatives, particularly those aimed at regenerating disadvantaged areas. But local people are best placed to decide how funding is spent, how services are run, and how their area is developed – communities must be in charge of this funding.

“We agree that community assets are vital to growth. That’s why
it’s so disappointing to see the absence of funding for community ownership in the Spending Review. The Community Ownership Fund has enabled community groups to bring hundreds of loved local spaces into community ownership so they can be used to bring people together, create jobs and provide essential support.

“Local grassroots organisations have used community ownership
to revitalise local neighbourhoods, drive economic growth,
and reignite pride in place. This Spending Review was a missed opportunity to help hundreds more do the same. Renewal can only happen with the direct involvement of local people. The Government must now set out a clear way forward on how to put community power at the top of their agenda.”
