Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) brings bright red blooms to the garden and attracts hummingbirds. The key to growing it is consistent moisture. Give it morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in Louisiana’s summer heat. Water during dry spells. It does best when its soil doesn’t dry out.

Blazing stars (Liatris species) bring tall spikes of purple flowers to Louisiana’s late-summer landscape. The blooms begin opening near the top and work their way down. Match the Liatris species to your site. Most prefer plenty of sun, but Louisiana’s native species vary in their moisture needs.

Invasive plants are non-native species that spread into natural areas. They can crowd out native plants, reduce the habitat and food available to wildlife, and change the ecosystems. Remove invasive plants and create room for natives to thrive. #StopTheSpread

Some years, oaks can choose chaos. One year: a respectable number of acorns. Another: ACORNS. EVERYWHERE. There’s science behind the chaos. Oaks can experience mast years, trees produce a heavy acorn crop at roughly the same time. Apparently, “make more than they can eat” is a strategy for Oaks.

An oak tree is much more than a tree. It’s a super center for nature. You’ll find life at nearly every level. And the ecosystem doesn’t stop at the trunk. Some of these relationships have developed over thousands of years. One tree. A whole community. That’s the power of an oak. #OakWeek

We’ve lost more than 200 native plant species in the USA since the 19th century. It’s not slowing down. Habitat loss, invasive species, extreme weather. We’re watching the foundation of our ecosystems disappear. Native plants aren’t just “nice landscaping”. They are the system. Protect natives.
