No, they don’t have an accent—all the other parrots have accents 😉

Over the past decade, the makeup of the Democratic coalition has shifted markedly toward wealthier, more highly educated voters. Does this also make them more likely to vote in an off-year cycle?

I am appalled by what was done to the Buttigiegs. Whoever filed that malicious, false report should be brought swiftly to justice. That person is a danger to us all. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/26/u...

Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem says that no voting system can satisfy all the mathematical criteria that most people would want in a fair voting system. It doesn’t mean that California can’t do a whole lot better.

So fun to see The Rocketeer again on the big screen after 35 years… and to hear from three of the key creative minds behind it.

Seeing Comet Hyakutake alone in 1996 on a dark mountain road outside Santa Cruz was one of the transcendent moments of my life. It changed how I saw the world and myself in ways that I’m still unfolding.

Certainly you’re right. But I wonder: in the sausage making process, popular legislative ideas are often hijacked as vehicles for non-germaine provisions & partisan pork. Single-issue items are rare—but, if, like the Epstein bill, one manages to get to the floor, it can pass with supermajorities.

Can an illiterate person read a book? This is why listening to an audiobook, while a perfectly wonderful way of experiencing and consuming the book, is a different activity from reading. Also, pets are not actually children. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I’ve heard good arguments both ways. The first looks better on the shelf but the second is better if you want to show up in libraries/searches

Style question: for nonfiction, do you prefer the witty bit as the title, with the explanatory subtitle—or the reverse? Do you like: (a) A Tale of Two Cites: The Co-Evolution of APA and the Chicago Manual of Style or (b) The Co-Evolution of APA and the Chicago Manual of Style: A Tale of Two Cites

I was fortunate enough to hear Michael Tilson Thomas conduct Mahler’s 9th Symphony just a few years ago. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had. It almost existed outside of time. I can still hear the final notes. RIP MTT.

Is quiet vote trading at work here? Did Rand Paul know his “no” vote would not derail the nomination? This kind of “almost” seems to happen a lot.

So one thing they don’t really tell you is that stone urns are heavy and awkward, and the lid is not exactly on tight. The ride home from the funeral service yesterday was a smidge more stressful than I expected as I strained to avoid re-enacting that ashes scene from Big Lebowski
