Every time I teach Media Literacy, I ask students what they think are the top 3-5 news stories since 2000. I usually have the top 10 but this year it is only 9 because of so little consensus. And yes, for 9, they wrote "prez elections," not any in particular, so I wasn't forcing it to be a catchall.
Screenshot of lecture slide with students top news stories since 2000, with 9/11 and COVID as the top two.

My chapter examines how VP candidates from 2008 to 2020 communicated gendered ticket balancing. I explored gender as a multidimensional variable that is strategically communicated to achieve self- and dual-presentation goals and took an intersectional approach.

A trip to the in-laws means checking in on the San Antonio Express-News and, well, the entire front page is literally an ad for a nursery.

A friend sent this to me, and it helped crystallize why I found Klobuchar's announcement so underwhelming. A Democrat running in Minnesota right now needs to express grief, resistance, and joy/resilience. Klobuchar did not convincingly express any of these, let alone all 3 in concert in her video.

So many insular boys club moves in this article, from Amazon overpaying and overpromoting to picking Ratner of all people to direct. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/28/b...

I do think theatrical releases and at-home viewing can simultaneously contribute to a “love of films,” but I don’t think I ever went home after a movie and watched another movie at home. Y’all? www.nytimes.com/2026/01/16/b...
Quote from Ted Sarandos, the co-chief executive of Netflix, about how movies in theaters and at home work to create more love of films.

“Defend the Brand” in TX high school football suggests the masculinity of the sport is somehow in jeopardy. Author notes we often hear of sports as “turnings boys into men” but that is rarely, if ever, applied to girls/women. #NCA2025

Paper examining news coverage of Olympic boxer Khelif. They find right-leaning news emphasized the idea that strong women “don’t fit” in women’s sports. Umm, pretty sure all women athletes are, ya know, strong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This article talks about the lack of restrooms for women in state legislature buildings on floors for chambers *and* public galleries. Women weren’t built into the democratic architecture as ones in power or to witness those in power. Still fighting for representation.

Two things to note: 1. Good on HEB for donating to orgs focused on “making childcare more accessible and affordable.” 2. Don’t forget this 435-store TX empire was started by a woman in 1905: Florence Thornton Butts. And yes, physical paper because my in-laws get the daily paper.
