got out for a disc golf round on a perfect New England fall afternoon, and even managed to throw pretty well This course has ridiculous pars, so I shot a -14 which I'm happy with but is somehow not a superb round

Released version 1.4.0 of `mdriver`, my streaming markdown renderer, which now supports rendering mermaid diagrams to ascii. imo this is fun If image support is available and requested, it renders an image, and if not it tries to render an ascii diagram

David Hogg's article on LLMs in Astrophysics, "Why do we do Astrophysics?" is the most thoughtful critique I've yet read on the topic, and relevant for computer scientists and software developers: arxiv.org/html/2602.10181
So is everything fine? No everything is not fine. Recall that the practice of astrophysics cannot be learned from reading about astrophysics, and that astrophysics is not about obtaining the answers, but rather the work we do, ourselves, to find those answers. When we offload that work to LLMs, we are no longer doing astrophysics, we are no longer becoming astrophysicists, and, eventually, we no longer are astrophysicists. The let-them-cook policy, in the end, leads to the death of astrophysics, the end of astrophysics at universities, and the end of astrophysics education. Astrophysics would no longer be by humans, and then it would no longer be for humans.

Fixed a bug with fenced code display in mdriver and released `0.16.0`: notes.billmill.org/dev_blog/2026/03… Now I'm watching basketball and I told the agent to test against the spec and find more bugs, and it seems to be finding some nice corner case bugs
OK, so blockquote renders the --- literally. Per spec, > foo\n> --- should be a setext heading inside a
blockquote (h2 "foo"). But that's complex nesting behavior.

Let me check a few more things:

$ # Check: info string with backtick should NOT be treated as code fence
cd /Users/llimllib/code/mdriver/find-more-bugs && printf '``` foo\x60bar\nbaz\n```\n' | cargo run --
--color=always 2>/dev/null | cat -v

^[[38;2;192;197;206mbaz
^[[0m

This IS a bug. Per spec: "If the info string comes after a backtick fence, it may not contain any backtick
characters." So ``` foo`bar should NOT be a code fence. But mdriver treats it as one.

Apparent also is the government's ignorance of an American historical document called the Declaration of Independence. Thirty-three-year-old Thomas Jefferson enumerated grievances against a would-be authoritarian king over our nascent nation. Among others were
- "He has sent hither Swarms of Officers to harass our People."
- "He has excited domestic Insurrection among us.”
- "For quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us."
- "He has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies without the consent of our Legislatures"

From the powerful obituary of Renfrew Christie: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/14/world/af…
Dr. Christie acquired his fierce antipathy to apartheid at a young age, growing up in an impoverished family in Johannesburg.

Many of his family members fought with the Allied forces against the Germans in World War II, and “I learned from them very early that what one does with Nazis is kill them,” he said at a 2023 conference on antinuclear activism in Johannesburg. “I am not a pacifist.”
