So proud of the newly minted Dr. Lucas Azambuja, who defended his fantastic JHU sociology dissertation today that explains why fractions of the Brazilian capitalist classes aligned and de-aligned over Bolsonarismo. He starts a postdoc at Tulane very soon - New Orleans, look out!

Trying not to be totally gutted by this week’s retirements of both Steve Hahn and Barbara Weinstein, two of the best mentors and colleagues I could imagine. Some massive shoes to fill at NYU in their wake.

Happy to share the CFP for next year's Social Science History Association conference under the leadership of Ho-fung Hung - "Decentering Modernity." Proposals due by March 1 - details here: ssha2026.ssha.org
Call for Papers 51st Annual Meeting of the Social Sciences History Association Hilton Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia – November 19th-22nd, 2026 Submission Deadline: March 1st, 2026 Decentering Modernity Since the inception of social science disciplines in the nineteenth century, modernity has been viewed as a unique phenomenon originating in the West and radiating to the rest of the world. This understanding of modernity has served as the foundation of modern social sciences. It has also been embraced by both Western imperialists, who believed in their “civilizing mission,” and postcolonial nationalist elites striving to implement “modernizing programs” in their new nations. Over the last three decades, social science history has witnessed a flourishing of works that challenge this Western-centric notion of world development. They demonstrate that modernizing processes that have long been assumed to be unique to early modern Europe – such as the rationalization and centralization of the state, marketization of the economy, the rise of new ideologies pursuing individual freedom and political representation, and the transition away from the demographic ancien régime – have been parallel processes across different civilizations in the post-Mongol world. Embedded in diverging cultural idioms and manifesting local variations, the multiple forms of early modernities interacted with one another in the integrated global economy from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. As such, the rising domination of the Western form of modernity in the Age of Imperialism is far from a unidirectional imposition of Western institutions, but a constant process of power, resistance, hybridization, and negotiation. In today’s world, we see the center of gravity of capitalist development moving away from traditional Western countries with the emergence of new centers of capital accumulation in the Global East and Global South. While the ongoing democratic backsliding does not spare man…

Ok, it's not exactly Danish Marxism, but there are some Danish (post)Maoists and Fourth Internationalists in here! My new article on the overlooked Copenhagen riots at the 1970 World Bank/IMF annual meeting is out, open-access, in Journal of Global History.
Abstract of an article titled "Riots could be expected: Toward a global history of protest and reaction at the World Bank" by Christy Thornton in the Journal of Global History, that reads: Examining an all-but-forgotten episode of large-scale protest at the 1970 annual meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Copenhagen, Denmark, this article asks how officials at the World Bank understood and reacted to such protest. How did they characterise the protestors’ demands in the moment? Why and how did they feel the need to respond, and what strategies did they use to do so? And what does that response tell us about how officials at the World Bank understood about the relationship between development and social upheaval? Using heretofore unexamined institutional records, this article argues that already in 1970, World Bank officials were deeply concerned with public opinion about their institutions in both the developed and developing worlds—and therefore found themselves having to reckon with the riots that threatened to derail not just their meetings, but their mission.

My fave recent Thanksgiving feast was homemade dal makhani, palak paneer, baingan bharta, and some naan with lots of nigella seeds. We lived above an Indian restaurant that year, I guess it rubbed off?

The Rolling Stones reactionary?
In his article in Politisk Revy number 154, Jan Michaelsen argues, among other things:
1. that contempt for people, especially women, has become the Rolling Stones' trademark.
2. that attacks on the Black Panthers by those in power are racist in nature,
3. that police officers, violence directed at anyone but those in power, perpetual male chauvinism and glorification of drugs throughout the album "Let
4. that the Stones bring together rapists, junkies and the political protesters,
Jan Michaelsen concludes: The Stones prevent young people from having a clear revolutionary attitude.
Cops are criminals
