I feel like there are so many fun decks and mechanics to play in Old Frame that get left behind by the power creep on modern cards. Plus it’s nostalgic to play, and you can’t beat the aesthetic. Old Frame Legacy has a slightly less intense card pool than Vintage, but proxying is cool and fun too.

Mostly I just wanna build some jank kitchen table decks and be able to take them to different stores to play 60 card heads-up old magic between EDH matchups, or play some casual games at a cafe or a bar for happy hour.

I was excited about premodern, but it seems like its a competition format. I’d love to see a casual play format codified for old frame that includes older and starter sets. Especially with some common rule 0 conventions like, decks cost <$100 or a peasant version with limits on rare cards.

The main thing I’m interested in is playing casual games with old frame cards. So I started to DIY my own proxies so my EDH decks look like they were printed 25yrs ago. But I’ll buy new cards printed in the old frame too. But I am also very interested in seeing more support for old frame formats:

i remember reading this card as a child and thinking “why would you have Forests in a red deck?” and then the concept of multi-color deck synergies dawned on me, and I’ve been addicted to deck-building ever since.

i was thinking about how to incorporate some newer features like the legend crown and the nyx overlay into the Old Frame and threw together this "Old Frame 2003" hybrid version using the newer fonts and features but still in the classic frame. not sure how i feel about it yet, but here it is anyway.

Old Frame alter:

Imaryll, Elfhame Elite

Legendary Creature - Elf Warrior

Whenever Imaryll, Elfhame Elite attacks, it gets +X+X until end of turn, where X is the number of other Elves you control.
You may have Imaryll assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked.

I chop zucchini into cubes, sauté it quickly in a sauce pot with a little garlic and oil. Then add water, boil, and add couscous. Take it off and season with lemon & parmesan. Makes a big bowl of garlic veggie carbs, one dirty pot, done in <10 mins. Tastes great cold the next day as a summer salad.

Also, I think other colors should get their own land creatures eventually. Well. Blue maybe, and definitely red. But there could be a 3 mana shaman (kind of like Ophiomancer) that says “at the beginning of each end step, if you don’t control a Mountain Dragon, create one…”

Idk, I’m still confused about the flavor of this card. I don’t get why they used a deep sea creature to generate forest lands, or why the lands use the Tentacle token creature type. Obviously, as an old head, I feel like these should have been Thallids and Saprolings.

I use Affinity Photo to patch blank frames, and Affinity Publisher to typeset cards. I'm trying to build a design library of high-res blanks so I can recreate modern treatments like extended and borderless in the old frame layout. I could share some blanks but its not exactly Card Conjurer

This was the homebrew idea I had a few years ago. I can’t think of a more fitting throwback to the best Counterspell ever printed than a Counterspell with a body that goes infinite.

I wanna see more of this. We know the rules, the mechanics, just build your own custom formats and cubes. Draft a home made expansion set built to 2003 power levels. Make your own card treatments and art. Who cares about what they’re trying to sell to you.

I saw someone on Reddit who was brewing an entire from-scratch old frame expansion set themed around the 80s prehistoric & barbarian fantasy aesthetic. I was too young to get into that stuff, but a homebrew set based on pulp sword & sorcery sounds way more interesting than basically any UB so far.

Honestly, I struggle to find much to be excited about in modern Magic since the 30th edition set, the release schedule, and universes beyond. I am way more interested in cards that got a block release, Old Frame, casual heads-up games, custom cubes, and (also, obviously) social EDH.
