Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 12/10/2026It creates a pastiche of strong writing. You can’t become a great author by mimicking great authors, otherwise we’d all do it. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 11/10/2026It would be interesting to see the study replicated with calculators instead of A.I. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Morning. Halfway through Everlasting (Harrow) and very much swept up in the story. 041
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Anthropic employees apparently intended to allow their AI agents to interact with 3rd party websites without regard to those sites’ TOS or purpose. The specific harms, while not directly predictable, arise from that initial human intention. 110
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Morning! Halfway through “The Devil is Dead” (Lafferty). Not quite sure what the hell it’s about but it’s surprisingly enjoyable. Gave up on the “Hospital Station” books for now- fun plots, awful characters. Looking forward to switching to some modern fantasy next. 021
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 23/09/2026The Quantum Magician is one of my my current favourite books. Highly recommended. 001
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Morning! I’m reading Star Surgeon (White) which trots along nicely except for all the rather jarring bits where the protagonist fantasies about sexually assaulting his reluctant love interest. Listening to Children of Strife (Tchaikovsky) which is as good as expected. 063
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I think (probably) disapproving of something but going along with it publicly is a near perfect example of what complicity means. 050
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Yes, that’s the one Asimov I’ve kept. I must reread it sometime. 310
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 13/09/2026It's Tchaikovsky all round here. Just finished Green City Wars which definitely grew on me and started the audio of Children of Strife having had a ball rereading the earlier ones in preparation. in non-Tchaikovsky news. I finished Slow Gods which really was excellent. 051
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I had a really good time at a Proclaimers set once. But out they go. 001
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I want a novel idea, intelligent development and good writing. Character, setting, plot and message can be anything at all as long as they are written well, but if it's missing that startling idea I'm unlikely to stay interested. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 07/09/2026People with delusional parasitotis have very little control over what is clearly a truly horrible condition. They may take up pseudo science in a desperate search for a cure. It’s really not the same as right wing anti vaxxers driven by selfish ideologies. 440
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Yoon Ha Lee’s Machineries of Empire books are some of my absolute favourite modern SF novels. I’m currently most of the way through Slow Gods (Claire North) which is also excellent. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 06/09/2026It might be the feeblest defence possible but what choice does he have? He won’t admit anything, it’s all on video and this is apparently the only argument left to him. Expect him to pursue it with the desperation of a drowning man with a clutchable straw. 040
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Good morning. I’m reading the excellent Slow Gods (North) and listening to Green City Wars (Tchaikovsky) which was a slow start but gets better throughout. Snapped up No Life Forsaken (Erickson) but will have to reread the first one again first. 081
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Post cataract surgery I have good distance vision, cheap close up reading glasses (books and tablet) and prescription glasses for mid distance (computer, board games, jigsaws). If I could choose again I’d probably pick the mid distance for convenience but it is nice to see the stars from bed. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I was sectioned after my son was born 35 years ago.I didn’t spend the rest of my life in a mental hospital. I was back to work in 12 months. The severity of puerperal psychosis does not predict the length of the illness and hospitals aren’t jails. If she’s no longer ill she should be released. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I'm halfway through Slow Gods and it's excellent. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Morning. Audio is Green City Wars (Tchaikovsky) which had a slow start but is growing on me. Just started Slow Gods (North) in paperback which was a close to instant hook. I want to know what’s going on! 161
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 23/08/2026We had one of Eysenck's test books when I was a child but my parents never regarded it as more than a curiosity and it was obvious that the more you did them the better score you got. I found tests fun so I did lots of them. It was quite clear that I was not the prodigy my scores suggested! 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 22/08/2026You don’t have to like her, her choices or her politics to recognise that she’s in a highly vulnerable and unsupported position. I genuinely don’t know how we should be responding but in the UK we’ve just seen what wall to wall ‘point and laugh’ coverage can lead to. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 21/08/2026I’m well over 50 and I was only 14 when Chariots of Fire came out. All the ones before that were definitely “before my time”. I’ve seen 4 of the list in total. 000

Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Morning! Having fun rereading the first 3 Children of Time books (Tchaikovsky). Found Concrete Island (Ballard) in charity shop- bleak but good. Starting Platform Decay (Wells) on audio- lots of reading treats this week. 031
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Perhaps the NYT can use their media expertise to comment on the astonishing newsworthiness of accusations of PhD plagiarism against a sociology professor? 241 articles in 22 days, I understand. 0141
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 15/08/2026I remember the first illustration vividly from my copy in childhood. It illustrated the scariness of the empty clothes people perfectly 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Introduce yourself as what almost killed you. Hello, I'm Louise, I'm an undertow on a red-flagged beach in Portugal. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 09/08/2026That’s your idea of someone online being agitated? Have you considered getting out more? 100
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Triggered? Find me one comment in this thread In which anyone is showing any signs of being 'triggered'. 120
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Maybe researchers are analysing donations by social class. It’s the only characteristic that I can imagine parental occupation might usefully identify. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Nonesuch on Kindle- I was a bit put off Spufford by some of his Narnia comments but I’m enjoying this. Still House of Saints on Audible. I haven’t had much listening time recently, but it seems to be coming to a pretty decent climax. 031
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 31/07/2026"The story, characters, scenes, humour, structure and voice came from me”. So they are just missing the boring bit of putting down the actual words in the order they would appear on the page, then? 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 28/07/2026We have one small elderly dog allowed on the bed (along with both cats) and one fairly large adolescent dog who has a dog bed on the bedroom floor. Old dog is definitely smug and defends her privilege fiercely. Young dog is resigned to the general unfairness of life. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Shortly after we moved to the north of England the local permanent traveller site was hit by catastrophic floods and everything lost. I was utterly shocked at a neighbour's gleeful reaction, justified by 'how they behave'. Around here it's a bigotry that doesn't even try to hide. 0115
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 19/07/2026Afternoon. Reading Ironclads(Tchaikovsky) from the library, audio House of Saints (Künsken) which has got a bit bogged down in details but is still good, just finished Rakesfall (Chandrasekhera) which was much more readable than I’d anticipated. 031
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 19/07/2026My dog is called Odysseus (Odd for everyday), with his name on his harness. I reckon for about 50% of the random people I meet the name means nothing and for another quarter or so it's a vague 'isn't that a Greek thing?' (From now on I imagine they'll all think I named him after Matt Damon.) 000

Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 12/07/2026:-( If there’s any chance that it’s facial cellulitis, tell your dr’s receptionist that and it should be looked at urgently. 100
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/07/2026She was a horrible bigot. She was also apparently an elderly woman living alone in an isolated area and if it turns out that and not her politics was why she was murdered then I would hope people would manage to care on behalf of women in similar circumstances. 120
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Something of a devil’s advocate post. FIFA are required by their rules to be fair, even handed, not to give in to political influence and to operate a fair and open appeals procedure. Whether they broke one additional rule in the process of breaking all the above is hardly worth the argument. 000
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Good day. Listening to House of Saints (Künsken), just finished The Invincible (Lem), thinking about what to start next. Maybe Pocketful of Lies (Charles). 021
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 15/06/2026York has several HP themed shops now. One of them makes a great deal of noise about being legit and licensed but who really knows? 120
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 15/06/2026Character-driven hard SF- plenty of both science and LGBTQ+ characters in this story about a Venus colony. 010
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 13/06/2026I got about that far, objected, was assured by several people that I’d find ethical issues were tackled in either book 3 or 4 onwards. DNF. 130
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 11/06/2026That's pretty good eyesight! I went on a husky trip in northern Sweden with no moon and the starlight reflected on the snow was perfectly adequate to see the surroundings by. It needed the snow though. 030
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 11/06/2026I was solo wild camping on Dartmoor and nipped out for a wee in barely adequate visibility, dressed only in a t-shirt.The fog rolled up in seconds. I was camped on a small tor surrounded by bogs, no other humans for miles, and it took 20 terrified minutes to find my tent again. 050
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/06/2026Perhaps I was unfair to Baroness Orczy then? She might have assumed her readers would know the parties were appropriately timed. I did know that the Lunar Society in Birmingham was so named because they met on evenings with a full moon for ease of travel. Still not sure about cloud cover though. 2320
Louise Holden @llamaperson.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I got irritated with The Scarlet Pimpernel where the Blakeneys apparently drive their carriage home from parties in the moonlight. The number of nights in England where there’s no cloud cover and the moon is near enough full for a horse to see by- well, you wouldn’t go to many parties. 2420
