A bit of mid-week fun: Show us where your #LL16 travel cups have been! Here's one of ours at the Winter Market in Essen, keeping a hot apple cider warm for the evening 🍎♨️❄️
A hand is holding a tan-colored travel mug. The logo on the mug says LL16 and has a stylized image of the nearby decommissioned coalmine's Bauhaus-style winding tower. In the near background are twinkling lights and a decorated evergreen tree. In the farther background is the blurry outline of small outdoor shops and a carousel. The sky is dark. It is night time.

Since the time I was a PhD student, I've always found the annual #LinguisticLandscape workshop to be a welcoming, almost familial space. Where else can you enjoy a mother-son talk, like today's "Collapse and transformation of Jefferson Street in Nashville Tennessee" by Becky and Nick Garvin? ❤️ #LL16

On the third day of #LL16 in #Essen we begin with #art. Some images of work by Hülya Özkan.
Close up of a large "mural" assembled from waste. Abstract blue, green, yellows and just a bit of black and orange. Layered with light shining through. Another close up. These multicolored plastic were assembled with a heat gun. You can see the traces of bubbling and distortion. Close up of tiny bits of "waste" plastic from her other projects lacquered into a kind of terrazzo effect. Larger view of the broken plastirrazzo pot reassembled. A larger piece hangs in the background and two conference participants discuss the works.

Kind reminder to please remember to bring your own equipment if you're presenting at #ll16! Our conference rooms do not have computer systems and, like many universities in Germany, the University of Duisburg-Essen does not provide conference attendees with laptops.
Text and images on an orange and black background. The text reads: IMPORTANT REMINDER Please remember to bring your own equipment. The images are a laptop, a charger, a USB cable, and a stylized USB memory stick.

1/5 Hömma! Schön datte da bis! Ruhrdeutsch is the regional dialect spoken by the locals in the Ruhr Area (sometimes also referred to as the "Ruhrpott"), where #LL16 will be hosted.
A black and white map of Germany zoomed in to the region known as the Ruhrgebiet. The city of Essen is most prominent. Over the map are the words 'Hömma! Schön, datte da bis!' The frame of the image is a burnt orange color, reminiscent of rust.

Follow Friday! We recently spotted this excellent volume by #LL16 plenarist Jackie Jia Lou @loujiajackie.bsky.social in our university's collection. With only ~150 more sleeps until #LL16, it's a great time to brush up on memorable LL studies. What's your go-to favorite?
A book is sticking out of a bookshelf in a library. The image is focused on the cover of the book, white text on a brown background, which reads "The Linguistic Landscape of Chinatown, A Sociolinguistic Ethnography", author Jackie Jia Lou. The cover image on the book above the text shows a photo of an ornate gate surrounded by plain buildings. The gate marks the entrance to a 'Chinatown' and has colorful signage all around it.

How about some meta-linguistic commentary from the LL of Berlin to brighten up your day? #LL16
An orange sign in a Berlin subway station. The German text reads "Berliner Glück ist, wenn man den Kaffee auch ohne Englisch-kenntnisse bestellen kann." An English equivalent is "Berlin happiness is when you can order coffee without nowing English". Although the connection to gambling is unclear, this is nevertheless an advertisement for a German chain of casinos/pokeys/slot machine arcades.

Not sure what to expect from the LL of Essen, Germany? How's this for a tasty teaser? (btw, our conference dinner menu is fully vegan, and allergen-friendly!) #LL16
A supermarket display of canned hot dogs featuring classic American iconography such as red, white, and blue flags, and football motifs. The football player is labelled here as "Bud Spencer" - the pseudonym of Italian spaghetti western star Carlo Pedersoli. He loks like he is furiously hungry for the pictured hot dog. The display says "bulldozer hot dog würstchen bud spencer"

Fun Fact Friday! What do /ae/, Essen, and ash (trees) have in common? They're cognates! In German, Essen/essen can mean food/to eat, but the name of our city probably comes from a word related to ash trees. Similarly, the name of the /ae/ symbol comes from an Anglo-Frisian term for ash trees!
