Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 21/10/2025Book signing ‘Sketching a Year in Lakeland’ in Sam Read’s Books @samreadbookseller.bsky.social this afternoon. It was a very damp day! 0100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 21/09/2025Cycle touring in Scottish rain seems to have made my legs stronger now I’m down amongst the pretty cottages & flint built churches of Hampshire. Mind you the hills were just as steep! 0100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 19/09/2025How to choose four photos to sum up five days chasing five ferries (one cancelled, all but one struggling with technical issues) around the Scottish islands & mainland peninsulas? Days of sunshine & cycling & torrential rain & cycling. A fabulous few days 🚴♀️🚴🏻♂️ 0111 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 07/09/2025The Florence Mine once produced haematite for the steel industry as the red puddles proclaim. Egremont Castlecis also worth a visit. 071 7
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 07/09/2025If you can get to the exhibition ‘Wrestle’ at the Florence Arts Centre near Egremont, Cumbria, it’s definitely worth visiting. Jan Moss & @chrisroutledge.bsky.social have paintings & photos (& I have a small embroidery). And a fascinating place too. 1113 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 30/08/2025Had a lovely run today before the rain arrived. I’m so glad I’m still able to run these trails even tho I’m much slower. I did perform a quite spectacular tumble on a steep path. Really rather proud of the head-over-heels roll back onto my feet, even if did I graze my arm en route 😂 5251 25
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 29/08/2025I’ve been reflecting on my visit to the ‘Everest the Hard Way’ exhibition in Grasmere - looking at my 1st edition copy of the book & realising there wasn’t a single woman on that expedition. How the world has changed. And how climbing is no longer viewed in the same way. Different times. 050 5
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 23/08/2025Finished the last five miles of the New Lipchis Way to reach the sea at East Head at the entrance to Chichester Channel. Very flat. Lovely views, but very flat. I really don’t like flat walking. 1100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 18/08/2025‘Half’ a Grasmere Skyline today: 14.62 miles / 4751’ ascent. Very glad I set out early as it was already hot at 8am! Ticked off Loughrigg & Silver How before Marmalade toast at Mathilde’s cafe in Grasmere. On to Stone Arthur & Great Rigg & then along the ridge to Nab Scar. An excellent day out ☺️ 0121 12
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Today was a day for strollin’ and where better to stroll to but the newly re-opened Grove Barn cafe (walkers only) above Ambleside. The veggie breakfast was so delicious I’d cleaned the plate before I remembered to photograph it! And the views - scroll for the views! 😍 1120 12
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 11/08/2025Seen on a 15 mile walk (stage two of the New Lipchis Way) from the chalk Downs (& an Iron Age hillfort) to the coastal plains of West Sussex. Only 5 miles left to walk but it will have to wait until later. 090 9
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 11/08/2025Seen on a 20 mile walk (stage one of the New Lipchis Way) across the Greensand & Chalk of West Sussex. 1130 13
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 06/08/2025No wonder my breathing was so bad on today’s run round the wheat fields of Hampshire! 0100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 03/08/2025‘Only’ an iPhone shot but I loved the tree roots, even if they are a sign of the damage caused by too many feet. 0170 17
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 25/07/2025Watching the Montane Lakeland 100 lead runners come through Eskdale: Jarreth McKenna in the lead, then Damian Hall in second & Anna Llewelyn in third, as well as being first lady. I shared videos on Instagram but I can’t share them here. We seem to have booked a room with a view! 1150 15
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Back at the Force cafe above Ambleside checking up on how my ‘offspring’ is doing. Always a delight to see it on the shelf, and always a delight to have lunch at the Force ☺️ 0121 12
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 29/06/2025Just back from a shortish bike ride - to get some air round the old limbs as it’s still a bit cool but no breeze today to move it round & the heat is oppressive. Had lunch at the local airfield cafe. Nearly drowned in my own sweat on this morning’s run 🥵 0150 15
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 27/06/2025Made an unexpected water garden visit today. We passed a sign inviting us in as we cycled along a lane, and found a little gem of a garden. Part of the Leckford Estate owned by Jon Lewis/Waitrose. 0100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 21/06/2025Could this be the best lunch stop ever? Superb walk today up to a high col having climbed up to a balcon path through flowery meadows below massive crags, crossing a huge rockfall (carefully) & descending through a city of ants nests. Fabulous day ☺️ 1170 17
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 20/06/2025When is a rest day not a rest day? When it involves 6 miles & 2000’ ascent because I just can’t sit still in this fabulous weather (too hot now tho 🥵) 0110 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 19/06/2025Can this place get any more beautiful? Yes, of course. A superb day’s solo walking along a delightful narrow balcony path high above the valley & below the massive limestone cliffs above. And the perfect restaurant 😉 0110 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 18/06/2025Two more amazing gorges, one down for ten miles & one up for ten miles - including a 1.7km tunnel which I have to say was most unpleasant. My longest climb on a bike ever, I think. But hot! Hot! Hot! 🥵 0140 14
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 17/06/2025Such a stunning walk up to La Moucherotte. This limestone may be tough underfoot but it is so very beautiful. We could see as far as a hazy Mont Blanc to the N & the Écrins in the E. There was a profusion of wild flowers & butterflies in the sheep pastures and on the wooded slopes above the valley. 6525 52
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 16/06/2025My longest highest climb to date - up to the Col d’Herbouilly at 1370 metres. The cold grey weather helped! I’m really enjoying the quiet roads (almost no traffic today!) & fast descents. One gorge & two cols today - and a caramel, apple & chantilly crêpe at the finish ☺️ 1180 18
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 14/06/2025Two big climbs on the bike today - over a Col & down a steep and winding gorge to climb over a shoulder & down to a tiny village then back up the gorge. My longest ride this trip & the most ascent so far. Excellent. 0100 10
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 13/06/2025The only way to survive in the heat is to get out early in the cool of the morning. Tackled my second longest climb up to a Col today, fuelled by chocolat chaud & orangina in lots of cafes. Plus lunch in a créperie. Farmers were tedding the hay into neat rows ready for baling. 0140 14
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 11/06/2025This is an amazing region of France; I just adore limestone scenery. It’s very sad though, that the haze is mostly pollution from a nearby city. 060 6
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 11/06/2025Flowers of the mountains. Such wonderful alpine rock gardens (sadly missing from the ski-wasted areas here but still to be found in the protected places) 1143 14
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 10/06/2025Walking & cycling in a beautiful region of France. It’s very quiet & we seem to be the only English people here. I’ll not mention where it is in case everyone flocks here 😉 3381 38
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 18/05/2025Ludlow must be one of the loveliest small market towns in the country. And there was a flea-market today in the main square opposite the castle as well as all the fabulous old buildings ☺️ 1160 16
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 16/05/2025Deeply incised valleys, picture-perfect half-timbered cottages, birdsong-filled woodlands, and a picnic supper (leaving no trace) on a sun-drenched hillside - what’s not to like about the Long Mynd? ☺️ 3231 23
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 15/05/2025A day of two halves: an early morning run over Loughrigg in the quiet cool of the morning & a stroll across to Grasmere in the heat of the afternoon (with an open-top bus ride back). Fighter planes in the skies. 0170 17
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 12/05/2025I’ve finished the embroidery that I designed for an upcoming exhibition celebrating Cumbrian Wrestling at the Florence Arts Centre in Egremont on the west side of Cumbria. The exhibition is a collection of paintings by Jan Moss & photos by @chrisroutledge.bsky.social The embroidery is a sideshow. 4393 39
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 10/05/2025What a glorious morning to wander slowly down to the water’s edge to have a lazy cuppa at the YHA cafe. Perfect ☺️ 1110 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 09/05/2025Robin Hood’s Bay looking quaint & lovely in the sunshine. It must have once been a very wealthy fishing village given the quality of the houses. It’s lovely wandering the narrow ginnels but sad it’s just a holiday village altho it would have been abandoned & fallen into ruin without tourism. 1110 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 04/05/2025It’s amazing just how crystal clear today has been. I could see the Isle of Man with the Irish coast beyond as well as the whole of the Scottish Galloway coast. And inland the full majesty of the Lake District was laid out against a medley of blue skies and fluffy white clouds. Magical. 2403 40
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 02/05/2025Now this is amazing! The oldest half timbered church in Europe, built in the 14th century and still in use today. The roof was lowered during renovation work in the 19thC but the ancient frescoes are still in evidence. 2250 25
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 02/05/2025Seeking out Neolithic monuments today. The Bridestones are all that’s left of a massive Neolithic burial complex vandalised by 18thC road builders & local landowners for stone to build the nearby turnpike road & houses. It must once have been seriously impressive and is still a fascinating place. 0110 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 25/04/2025Book signing, fell walking, lunch in a cafe in a pretty village, distant (UK, so quite small) mountains, occasionally sunny - what’s not to like? ❤️ 0171 17
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 20/04/2025A bit grey for a walk today but the lical architecture was anything but grey. I’ll share a few of photos of the stained glass inside the church, which is really beautiful 😍 2422 42
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 16/04/2025Thomas the Tank Engine has been blindfolded and kidnapped! 😱 3112 11
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 13/04/2025More excitement! Signing copies of my book in Keswick at Bookends and seeing more copies in the wilds of Booths supermarket. You can also buy Sketching a Year in Lakeland online at inspiredbylakeland.co.uk/collections/bo… 1295 29
Lizziwake @lizziwake.bsky.social · 13/04/2025A beautiful dawn over my favourite tarn before the rains arrive. They are much needed as the becks are so dry but the sunshine has been fabulous. Here’s to a good summer - we need it ☀️ 2271 27
