Truly vile. At a public event, Mike Graham mocked Andy Burnham’s father for having Alzheimer’s, less than three weeks after Roy Burnham died and apparently on the day of his funeral. Just the lowest of the low.

Canada-style “associate membership” does not yet exist, so treating it as the only route is another fantasy. The first steps are the single market and customs union. Rejoining would probably entail an eventual euro commitment, but adoption requires convergence and ERM II not joining it on day one.

• The £1,000/household figure is invented. No rejoining terms exist, so nobody can calculate the contribution. Britain’s previous average net contribution was £7–7.5bn a year; OBR estimates Brexit will leave UK productivity 4% lower.

• Inside the EU, Britain would have votes, MEPs, a commissioner and influence over its direction. Outside, we increasingly follow decisions we did not help make. • The far right is rising in Britain too. Brexit empowered Farage, it didn’t protect us from him.

🧵 Andrew Neil listed Europe’s problems while ignoring what Brexit has done to Britain. This 👇 isn’t an argument. It is 6 slogans. • FoM is reciprocal mobility, not open borders • Brexit made Britain’s growth problem worse. UK GDP/head grew by 4.4% from 2016-2024, compared with 9% in eurozone.

Six slogans, not an argument. Free movement isn’t “open borders”. Britain would regain a vote over EU rules instead of following them from outside. The far right is rising here too. And the £1,000 claim is invented: no re-entry terms exist. Brexit itself made Britain poorer.

This is an argument for democratic countries organising together not for 🇬🇧 retreat into isolation. The threat is transnational. Our response must be too. Britain can either help democratic Europe resist/reform or stand outside, affected by its decisions but increasingly powerless to shape them.

Andrew Neil is full of Brexit guff. Trump, Putin and the far right are precisely why Britain needs to help shape Europe, not sit outside it, poorer and powerless. The Europe of 2026 is different. So is the world. That is the argument for rejoining.

We punish legitimate farmers, processors and exporters while leaving gaps for smugglers. That risks unsafe food, catastrophic animal-disease outbreaks and the destruction of British livestock farming. This isn’t taking back control. It is surrendering our food security and biosecurity.

The sheer stupidity of Brexit: We made it harder and more expensive for high quality, fully traceable British food to reach our largest market, while creating a porous border through which illegal, rancid and potentially diseased meat can enter Britain. meatmanagement.com/opinion/brex...

Brexit’s veterinary border theatre: when control becomes the risk
There comes a point when regulation ceases to protect the consumer and becomes an industry in its own right. Post-Brexit veterinary border controls risk crossing that line, says AIMS's Jason Aldiss.

You responded to a woman’s political criticism by calling her “a woman scorned”, then tried to belittle rewriting her electoral history. That’s gendered dismissal. Denying it doesn’t make it disappear. Criticising a party I belonged to is legitimate. Membership is not a lifetime vow of silence.

I haven’t twisted anything. You posted a tired misogynistic cliché about a “woman scorned” because a woman expressed a political opinion you disliked. If that isn’t what you meant, tell us plainly what you did mean.

How v Gladstonian of you eh Steve: when a woman offers political analysis, ignore substance and reduce her to wounded emotion. I left LibDems bc I disagreed with political direction not bc I was scorned If you think my analysis is wrong, rebut it. “Woman scorned” is misogyny masquerading as wit.

Macmillan had lived through empire, two world wars, the 1929 crash and Suez. His conclusion was not nostalgic nationalism. It was cooperation, European power, active leadership and shared prosperity. Britain should listen to him now. Please watch and share. End.

Macmillan foresaw the choice now presented by AI. We can share its productivity through stronger public services, security and freedom from drudgery. Or allow its owners to escape taxation while governments go broke and ordinary people lose their work, assets and power. 10/11

Two years later, Macmillan completed the thought: “If wealth can be produced by machines, it must be distributed” so that everyone could enjoy greater leisure. Technology should liberate humanity, not create a tiny class of technological sovereigns above everyone else. 9/11

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Macmillan then looked further ahead: “Imagine a world in which the machines did almost everything… It’s fascinating. It’s H. G. Wells but it’s coming.” This was 1982, one year after the BBC Micro launched and as Acorn began the journey that would produce ARM. 8/11

Outside Europe, Britain is more exposed to American power, not less: US tariffs. US food demands. US technology. US defence policy. US financial markets. And now the energy consequences of Trump’s war. That is dependency dressed up as sovereignty. 7/11

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Then came his starkest warning. If Britain ceased making a meaningful strategic contribution, Macmillan said: “She becomes a purely client state of America.” Forty-four years later, Brexit Britain is discovering exactly what that means. 6/11

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Britain once projected power through its empire, colonies and the Indian Army, he explained. That world had gone. What remained were Britain’s “brain”, goodwill and traditions. But a country of 60 million could no longer command the world by itself. 5/11

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Macmillan understood what Brexit’s architects still refuse to admit: Sovereignty is not the theoretical freedom to stand alone. It is the practical power to shape events. “If we’d gone in at the beginning, we could have created, we could have shaped it.” 4/11

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Asked whether Britain could end the recession on its own, Macmillan replied: “No. No. No, nobody can. It’s just like Europe.” He called opposition to joining Europe “the whole fallacy” and added: “Look what we’ve suffered.” 3/10

Liz Webster 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇪🇺 @lizwebster.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Europe gives it the power to shape events. Without that power it becomes America’s client. Technology can liberate humanity, but only if political leadership ensures that the wealth it creates is shared. 2/11
