On the Cornell case, worth noting that a school 45 minutes away on the front page of the NYT for an extremely similar incident in 2014: www.nytimes.com/2014/07/22/n... This stuff is pervasive. I only remember this specific earlier case because I was working at HWS at the time.

A friend of mine was the anonymous plaintiff in a Title IX lawsuit against Harvard more than twenty years ago. Cannot adequately describe my anger at how little has changed since then.

the commitment to alienating ethnic minorities who would otherwise be a natural part of their voting bloc is really something to behold

There’s a genre of HE op-ed that identifies a problem, lists some solutions, then blames the department for not accomplishing what they do not control

Really don't want to jinx myself, but my undergrad classes are SO MUCH FUN this semester. Students are smart, engaged, making thoughtful contributions. Getting laptops out of the equation as much as possible has improved things even more than I had hoped

Their actual objections are just standard NIMBY bullshit. The wells are a pretext. "'We didn’t want to feel like we were living in suburbia,' said Merrill, who is among the neighbors appealing the conditional use decision."

Eyes Wide Shut came out my senior year of high school. My mom was a big Kubrick fan, she decided to take me to see it, without reading anything about it first.

One side effect of strongly discouraging laptops and making students do a bunch of in-class writing appears to be that they are much more likely to actually show up at my office hours! This is great, but also means I need to stop assuming I will be able to get other work done then.

To be clear, educating a kid with significant disabilities can easily cost $100,000 per year. A voucher for even $15,000–the high end of the range for such things--is absolutely useles.

Based on the language used in this description, I would bet money that someone with a background in special education is involved, and that person should be prosecuted.

Hey hey Bluesky, announcing my next book, hitting shelves near you the next time someone crashes out on here and posts through it!
Robert A. Pape's "Bombing to Win" edited to be titled Posting to Win, written by me. Subtitled "Epic Posting on Apps for Sports" with the bombs dropping from the B52 crudely replaced by photoshopped Bluesky logos.

Eavesdropping on a conversation between students at my university. One has found himself in a class whose assignments are all, in his description, "chats with an AI version of Socrates." He is indignant, switching classes ASAP. "I am not paying for this shit."

I cannot decide whether the judge in the MD redistricting case is just very very dumb, or whether this is legitimately the best argument for blocking the ballot question. In either case, this is some embarrassingly terrible legal writing: marylandmatters.org/wp-content/u...

Just want to highlight here the similarity with the antivax movement. The argument is that we have an obligation to spend endless time and money refuting scientific racism. In an age of higher ed austerity, we must re-prove long-settled claims rather than focusing on useful new research.

Agree with the sentiment here but I actually come to the opposite conclusion. Have AI departments, with engineering schools, for the people who want to learn to build this stuff. Leave the rest of us alone. Maybe a consultant in the research office for faculty who have a specific relevant project

In case you're wondering how stupid this was, the immediately preceding section of the rules literally reads "No obligation of secrecy may be imposed on any person except in accordance with Rule 6(e)(2)(B)." Defense counsel are not named in 6(e)(2)(B). Could not be more explicit.
