Nearly 20 years coming to Tradeswomen Build Nations, and I still leave fired up. What started as a few hundred of us is now thousands of women opening doors for each other and changing our unions. It’s inspiring to be a part of this network of powerful union sisters.

Latina Equal Pay Day marks the nine extra months Latinas must work to earn what white, non-Hispanic men earned last year. More than nine months just to catch up. Latinas deserve better, and our unions won’t stop fighting to close that gap.

Shit’s too expensive. Working people are barely scraping by while having to fight for raises and protect their health care. We deserve pay that covers the cost of living and the bargaining power to demand it.

Our message to tech billionaires: You don’t own our future. No amount of money can buy that. And to politicians at every level: Center working people in everything you do. That’s the ONLY way to get this right.

It shouldn’t require doomsday warnings to wake up to the very real threats that AI inflicts on us every day. Unions have been on the frontlines of this fight for years because it’s workers who pay the price if we take the wrong path. This is our future.

Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
We need clear, principled leadership we can trust that doesn't have ulterior motives in regulating this sector. That extends to politicians, too. We cannot and will not count on those directly taking PAC money from Big Tech companies to pass laws regulating those same companies.
120
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Tech billionaires are saying they support federal regulation — at the same moment Big Tech’s SuperPACs are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to kill any chance of that regulation! Things like that erode any credibility you have.
162
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
The idea that tech billionaires are going to self-regulate to save us from a dystopian future is laughable and flies in the face of every lesson from history. Even worse: We all see you talking out of both sides of your mouth.
121
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Workers don’t trust billionaire CEOs like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Dario Amodei to make AI safe. Why should we? Self-regulating banks led us into the Great Recession. Self-regulating tobacco companies covered up massive health risks. Laws had to force automakers to make cars safer.
120
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
By talking about how we can empower workers — strengthening union rights, passing legislation to protect children’s exposure to these platforms, forming partnerships with companies to upskill workers — we’re protecting ourselves from the most existential threats that AI poses.
150
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Will a nurse have to answer to a flawed algorithm before she treats patients? If I’m a teacher, what impact is AI in the classroom going to have on my students? As an office worker, is my job going to be automated away in the next few years?
120
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
The existential threat workers feel is about what an AI future means to our jobs, paychecks, privacy and safety. Our livelihoods. The very things that we rely on to keep our households running every single day.
121
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
But for workers: The threat is a lot more real, day-to-day, right in front of them. AI surveilling them at work. Automation taking their jobs.
130
Liz Shuler @lizshuler.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
First, we need to broaden the conversation about what “AI safety” means. Yes, it means thinking about the societal danger these technologies pose long-term if they go unchecked.
