My understanding, which could be wrong, is copyright post-Berne doesn't require registration. As soon as I send this skeet, thereby creating in a "fixed form" (as the law defines it), it is copyrighted to me. (Of course, to use this, or any other, site w/user content, I waive a lot of those rights.)

"I asked my immigrant friend if he knew how many violent crimes were committed by filthy immigrants from shithole countries like the one he came from, and he really didn't want to talk about it with me. This proves I'm right."

Huh. Katie Miller uses the same recipe. What are the odds?

So, what that means is, when they "talk", you've just got them sending inputs to each other. It's like those bouncing ball things executives used to have on their desks in the 70s. Action and reaction. A closed loop. Ouroborous.

Lizard @lizardky.bsky.social · 1h
I keep hearing these stories about AI's "collaborating" or "talking with each other". Dudes! (non-gendered, exasperated) They are machines that take input text and return output text. They have no awareness. They do not know if the input text is from a human or another LLM.

They will. They'll also talk about "the censorship industrial complex" under Biden.
To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word—doublethink—involved the use of doublethink.

Do you think the head of the FCC called up local broadcasters and said "Hey, my boss, Tricky Dicky, one of the most corrupt people of all time, wants me to tell you you're being too easy on him! You need more people talking about how corrupt he is, pronto, or I'll see you in court!"

Also, I'm sorry to beat on this (I am not) but, really, how do you imagine things worked under the FD, while Nixon was in power?
110
Lizard @lizardky.bsky.social · 1h
I mean, just imagine, WITHOUT the Fairness Doctrine, what this electoral map would have looked like! Good thing that FD kept Nixon from "controlling the narrative", I tell ya what.
110
Lizard @lizardky.bsky.social · 1h
So, lemme get this straight: The loss of a (very limited) tool by which the government COULD (slightly) control the media... was how they would "control the narrative". Yes. That makes sense. "By throwing away this gun, I can now shoot people!" You are very smart. Your parents must be proud.

Isn't that why Musk and similar fascists want to ban discussion or acknowledgement of LGBTQ issues in schools? So the poor innocent widdle kiddies won't have their pwecious minds warped by 'gender ideology'? Anytime someone makes this argument, they have no argument to make.

Some people REALLY don't like it when you point out that an LLM is, at the core, just a lot of die rolls on a lot of random tables connected by complex rules as to 'which table to roll on next' for each result.

Not necessarily at the exact timestamp of the mech raid, but, fairly close. The factors building up the 'pressure' are still there, but the precise outcome is fuzzy. That's the "AI", it just means "non-deterministic and self-modifying algorithm"
120
Lizard @lizardky.bsky.social · 2h
If you save scum and restart from a point just before you got hit with a mech raid, you might be hit by a manhunter pack or a heat wave or some other disaster, but, assuming your save was a few game-hours before the raid, you WILL be hit by SOMETHING.
120
Lizard @lizardky.bsky.social · 2h
It's "AI" in that it's not hard-scripted "X happens on turn Y", but a process where the pressure for *something* to happen builds due to time and colony wealth, and *what* happens is very roughly proportional to those factors.

Rimworld talks about "AI Storytellers", but the game was in pre-release in 2013. All it means is "We have three different algorithms which use assorted metrics to scale difficulty over time with periods of rest or reward".

At an SF con in the early 90s, after chatting w/a very cute, smart, funny woman for about 2 hours, she invited me back to her apartment "for lunch". I, the idiot, said "It's OK, I'm not that hungry, thanks." I figured it out several years later.
