Dearest reader,
It's no exaggeration to say that telling this story changed my life, completely and irrevocably. I'm so immensely grateful to you for reading it; to Charlie, Calista, and everyone at First Second for believing in it; to Ben for making us sound like way more competent writers than we actually are; and, of course, to Carey for bringing this story to life with unimaginable determination and enthusiasm. Over the last decade or so that we've been working on this series, I've been humbled time and time again by the effort and passion they put into this adaptation, and I genuinely could not be prouder of the result.
I consider myself profoundly fortunate to get to tell this story with my family and some of my favorite people on Earth), and to have so many folks at conventions and live shows tell us how it resonated with them. The idea that TAZ: Balance—the story of four idiots who played D&D so hard that they made themselves cry-could be something other people see themselves in is an honor beyond measure.
I am who l am today, as an artist and a person, because of the generosity, patience, and patronage of the people who listen to our shows and read our books. I'll never be able to repay that kindness, so instead, I'll offer some advice as we come to the end of the road.
We are four clown-men. When we started this story, we had virtually zero experience playing tabletop RPGs, and zero experience in long-form creative writing. I say that not as a self-slam, but to demonstrate something I've learned time and time again on The Adventure Zone: When you make things you love with people you love, you can tap into something bigger than yourself—something actually, factually magical.
The song is now yours, just as the story has always been yours.
