I’ve been taking pictures of good bumper stickers for more than 3 years (400 photos!) and the thing I love the most is that you rarely see the same deranged one twice. This was the only sticker on a new looking white Kia Forte parked at the North Carolina State Farmers Market on a Sunday morning.

Everyone knows Jolene!

Missed connection: Vickers Ave Pig
Me: 34yo fun, artsy, chill (usually, just not about this) queer girlie just driving to work this morning.
You: two lovely folks walking down Vickers Ave with a wholeeeeee honkin pig. Not like... a lil teacup thing, a big ol' white and black spotted pig.
If you didn't hear me squealing from my car please know: YOU ARE LIVING MY DREAM.
Fighting my usual introvert tendencies, I drove in a dramatic circle to tell you this, but by the time I got back, the pig and its humans were gone. Durham, need to pet this pig. I need to know its name. I'm not even kidding, if you know these folks please tell them I'm dying to befriend them.
UPDATE: I've been connected with Jolene's mom and we're gonna find a time to meet! Genuinely, thank you all for chiming in. Durham is a freaking magical placeGirlygal2014 • 5d ago

From Ivan Illich “Silence is a Commons,” 1982. “The machine-like behaviour of people chained to electronics constitutes a degradation of their well-being and of their dignity… The political process breaks down, because people cease to be able to govern themselves; they demand to be managed.”
Silence is a Commons
Computers are doing to communication what fences did to pastures and cars did to streets.
by Ivan Illich
Minna-san, gladly I accept the honour of addressing this forum on Science and Man. The theme that Mr.
Tsuru proposes, "The Computer-Managed Society," sounds an alarm. Clearly you foresee that machines which ape people are tending to encroach on every aspect of people's lives, and that such machines force people to behave like machines. The new electronic devices do indeed have the power to force people to
"communicate" with them and with each other on the terms of the machine. Whatever structurally does not fit the logic of machines is effectively filtered from a culture dominated by their use.
The machine-like behaviour of people chained to electronics constitutes a degradation of their well-being and of their dignity which, for most people in the long run, becomes intolerable.
Observations of the sickening effect of programmed environments show that people in them become indolent, impotent, narcissistic and apolitical. The political process breaks down, because people cease to be able to govern themselves; they demand to be managed.

There is literally no world in which I would ever "hit the sauna" or take an exercise class with my colleagues and I am a sober spin instructor. These are free time activities!

No, your coworkers don't want to grab a drink — they want to hit the cold plunge
By Juliana Kaplan and Ana Altchek

Feb 12, 2026, 5:07 AM ET
Save Saved

Corporate bonding has left the bar and headed straight for the yoga mat.
Remote work and a wellness-obsessed culture are driving alternative ways for coworker to socialize.
People who don't want to drink with coworkers may make surprising connections at the sauna instead.

At companywide conferences, Bethany Mascena's firm used to have what was called "lobby social club": Colleagues would convene at the end of the day to drink and hang out.

I wrote about some theories I learned at my yoga teacher training, like that the government shouldn't be telling you to vaccinate against disease and that you can heal cancer with reiki over at @flaminghydra.com. flaminghydra.com/issue-493/#i...
One of my instructors always gets strep, she said, because her throat chakra is blocked due to having to yell to be heard as a child. I heard a lot of theories like this one, at yoga teacher training. Like, you might be agoraphobic because one of your ancestors was once trapped under rubble, I heard. You can cure brain cancer by thinking the cancer away, we were told, or through reiki; you can manifest what you want in the world (like a boyfriend or wealth) as long as you are specific about your request and ask divination cards; we’re all in tune with the universe because humans, and the earth, are made up of H20 (the water element!)

“How do I keep getting myself into these ridiculous situations?” I texted my friend, a physician, a few days in.

“Just remember: shavasana into your third eye and your chakras will realign,” she replied. “Oh, and I forgot to tell you: we replaced all the meds in the hospital with crystals.”More and more theories emerged: crystal singing bowls emit vibrations on the same wavelength as brains; Louise Hay was a spirit medium, not an evil capitalist charlatan; we cannot dissect a body and find the emotions that make up the greater part of our human experience, which is why chakras are real; 5G cell towers are poisoning people; John D. Rockefeller invented the pharmaceutical industry; the person you should trust is yourself, not “Western science.” The government shouldn’t be telling you to vaccinate against disease.

Michael Gold
Kentucky's Republican secretary of state, Michael Adams, has reminded residents of his state that they cannot, in fact, vote in today's New York City mayor's race — or at all. Perhaps because of intense election coverage by national news outlets, Kentucky officials were getting calls about the polls being closed. But Kentucky has no elections scheduled today.
"Kentucky votes next year," Adams wrote in a social media post. "You cannot vote today in Kentucky for the mayor of New York City or the Governor of Virginia. Sorry."

In November I wrote about Trump’s obsession with the golden age of late night TV for @flaminghydra.com through the lens of his friendship with Joan Rivers. He hasn’t been invited back since 2016, but was once a regular; he appeared on Letterman more than 30 times. flaminghydra.com/the-trump-er...
Unable to adapt to streaming, the traditional late night shows are bleeding viewers. At his height, Carson reached 17 million Americans every night. Now, operating on a four-day schedule, The Tonight Show reaches about 2.04. million. And Trump himself may have something to do with the twilight of late night.
Tonight with Jimmy Fallon's head writer, Rebecca Drysdale, quit the show in late 2020 because she could no longer bear to write about him. In a Facebook post discovered by the Chicago Sun-Times and CNBC, she wrote that
"doing material about Trump has led to divided creative teams, anxiety, tears and pain... I don't believe that making fun of this man, doing impressions of him, or making him silly, is a good use of that power. It only adds to his."In interviews and campaign rallies, Trump has made it abundantly clear that he misses the golden age of late night, particularly the legendary Tonight Show host, Johnny Carson.
Carson helped make Joan Rivers's career, and she was a popular guest host on The Tonight Show for years. But when news leaked that she hadn't made the cut for consideration as Carson's successor, she took Fox's offer to host her own show in the same time slot as The Tonight Show. Carson took his revenge; he never spoke to Rivers again and blacklisted her, forbidding any celebrity who appeared on The Late Show with Joan Rivers from coming on The Tonight Show.Even as the news of late night hosts
"distraught" over Trump's win spread, the administration's circus has provided a firehose of outraged engagement. In 2017, a communications professor at George Mason University counted 3,100 jokes about Trump, as compared with Clinton's 1,700 in 1998 during the height of his impeachment scandal. Some percentage of Trump voters believe that he is likewise just doing it for the ratings, that his terrifying authoritarian rhetoric is schtick,
"just riling up the news." Despite all evidence to the contrary, these voters still believe that Trump is a "businessman," that he's "fiscally conservative," that he won't touch the socially liberal policies that many Americans support.

I am once again pointing to the Lisa Feldman Barrett piece, which is still the best thing I've read on the issue of campus speakers. www.nytimes.com/2017/07/14/o...
What’s bad for your nervous system, in contrast, are long stretches of simmering stress. If you spend a lot of time in a harsh environment worrying about your safety, that’s the kind of stress that brings on illness and remodels your brain. That’s also true of a political climate in which groups of people endlessly hurl hateful words at one another, and of rampant bullying in school or on social media. A culture of constant, casual brutality is toxic to the body, and we suffer for it.That’s why it’s reasonable, scientifically speaking, not to allow a provocateur and hatemonger like Milo Yiannopoulos to speak at your school. He is part of something noxious, a campaign of abuse. There is nothing to be gained from debating him, for debate is not what he is offering. On the other hand, when the political scientist Charles Murray argues that genetic factors help account for racial disparities in I.Q. scores, you might find his view to be repugnant and misguided, but it’s only offensive. It is offered as a scholarly hypothesis to be debated, not thrown like a grenade. There is a difference between permitting a culture of casual brutality and entertaining an opinion you strongly oppose. The former is a danger to a civil society (and to our health); the latter is the lifeblood of democracy.

By all means, we should have open conversations and vigorous debate about controversial or offensive topics. But we must also halt speech that bullies and torments. From the perspective of our brain cells, the latter is literally a form of violence.

Grimmelman is right, and as usual we are seeing it first in libraries: the market is flooded with cheap imitations, it’s confusing, and it’s devaluing work not because it’s so good but because it’s so bad! Not sure it’ll work legally, but it is getting worse and has to be addressed by book people
But in his ruling, Chhabria also laid out what Grimmelmann called a "road map" that plaintiffs could use in future cases to demonstrate such harms. He suggested that authors and other creators could claim that Al tools and chatbots will undermine sales of their original work by flooding the market with cheap imitations.

I am pro-author, pro-fair use, and anti-corporations supporting fair use only when it’s conveniently destroying jobs and creativity and not for its myriad uses in education and innovation. But this framing is wrong— authors aren’t competing with AI companies, that is not how creativity works.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) said he wanted to find a
balance between promoting innovation and protecting

and encouraging artists and creatives. "How can creators

compete with Al companies that generate content at the

push of a button, particularly when the content might

mimic or even reproduce their own work?" he asked.

Someone I work with got an email with my name on it asking them to buy gift cards in an obvious spam hack — it was from a .ru email w/my name in mail merge. The only place I am connected to this person is LinkedIn. What do I do in this situation other than double check passwords? Email below
The task involves purchasing a set of gift cards that will be used for an important internal distribution. Please locate a nearby convenience store, pharmacy, or large retail chain that sells Sephora gift cards - this is our first-choice option. If Sephora gift cards are not available, you may substitute with Macy's or Nordstrom gift cards instead.
Here are the specific instructions:
You'll need to purchase a total of 8 gift cards, each loaded with $200 - totaling $1,600. These can all be from the same brand, or a mix of Sephora, Macy's, and Nordstrom depending on what's available in-store. If one location doesn't have enough in stock or enforces a daily purchase limit, feel free to visit multiple stores to complete the purchase.
Once you've bought the cards, scratch off the back of each one to reveal the claim code. Then, take clear and legible photos of both the gift cards (with the codes visible) and the corresponding purchase receipts. As soon as that's done, please email all the images to me right away.
Reimbursement & Incentive
You will be fully reimbursed for the total amount spent. Once you've finished the task, please send me your bank details (account name, number, and bank name), and I'll process the reimbursement right away.
Also, there is a special performance incentive tied to completing this efficiently and accurately - I'll provide details once the task is wrapped up.
Please confirm receipt of this message and let me know if you're available to complete before noon.
Thanks,
