My best pal in blood donation advocacy can no longer donate due to cancer treatment so this one is for her, too. Thank you for making and giving the sweet stuff so regularly, Will!

If you want to come to me all proud that you've spotted a "definite" use of ChatGPT, and your evidence is that "it has those really long dashes," I would kindly ask you to bark up a different tree.

I just learned that the card used to play Suck & Blow in Clueless is an REI membership card. This fact will now become my entire personality.
This slightly askew photograph of a television captures a scene in the movie Clueless. Brittany Murphy and Breckin Meyer are participating in a game of Suck and Blow. Murphy is central in the frame, having just received (sucked) the card from the player next to her (Meyer). The card is a membership card from REI, an outdoor consumer cooperative retailer founded in 1938.

What a culturally tone-deaf marketing email subject line, Chrome Industries.
This Outlook email preview screenshot shows a subject line that reads "Make Room For Ice." It is an email about a cooler insert for one of Chrome Industries' bags and not, one presumes, a boot-licking message in support of the recent horrifying actions committed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Sometimes it's fun to pinpoint the reason you know something (a song, a fact, a person...). Today I used the word "sclera." I realized I know it because of an essay in Penn & Teller's 1989 book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends, in which Teller has an essay called "The Scleral Shells." Thanks, P&T.
This is a full-page photographic portrait from the book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends. The subject, magician Teller, is a middle-aged white man wearing a corduroy shirt. He looks slightly startled. He is wearing two scleral shells, which are prosthetics that cover the visible surface of the wearer's eyes. The shells are mostly white, each with a single black symbol hand-painted in the center. The right eye bears a numeral 3, the left eye bears a clubs playing-card symbol. Penn and Teller regularly force the 3 of Clubs in card tricks and these scleral shells were used as the punchline in a trick performed on the Today show.

I once asked friends to share their stupidest injuries. A guy said he'd strained his neck carrying a melodica (strung around his neck) on a hike. Truly a top-tier stupid injury, but I think about it often. I'm hoping you suffer no similar injuries neck-hauling your column around! Take breaks! 😅

I would like to shake the hand of whoever added the photo captions on the Wikipedia page for Hitler Has Only Got One Ball. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler_...
A screenshot of Wikipedia displays photographs of the song subjects and the photo captions clarify which characteristic belongs to which man. They are: Adolph Hitler (“one ball”), Hermann Göring (“two but very small”), Heinrich Himmler (“rather sim’lar”), and Joseph Goebbels (“no balls at all”).

Every article I read about what businesses should consider before using generative AI has the same ridiculously obvious conclusion. It reminds me of a gag in a Fry & Laurie sketch: "Let me give a warning to any families planning to take poetry on holiday with them: Be careful." YEAH, WE KNOW.

I searched "Christmas bucket list" to get some activity ideas. (Trynna keep things jolly in a grim year, you know.) One list had mostly small, simple acts ("have a snowball fight," "make a wish list," "send Christmas cards"). I was not prepared for the jump in scale between ideas 48 and 50.

I googled "Freddie Powell," a participant on Love Is Blind UK and, of course, google tossed up an AI Overview. Please enjoy the image google's AI used to illustrate who Freddie's ex-fiancée "Cat" is. NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS GARBAGE, GOOGLE.
In google's AI Overview for a search query, the searcher is presented with a brief summary of Freddie Powell and his ex, Cat (Catherine) Richards. Google has scraped a promotional photo of Freddie and placed it alongside the blurb about Freddie. Google has scraped a collage of photographs of housecats and placed it alongside the blurb about Cat. The brief blurb about Cat reads "Cat is now dating Jake Singleton-Hill, a co-star who didn't get much air time during the pod dates." It is unclear which housecat is the cat in question who is dating Jake Singleton-Hill.

My company's internal communications platform (Firstup) is configured to disguise concerning language with music notes. I gotta wonder: Is "old bag" really being used an inflammatory context THAT OFTEN in the year of our lord 2024 such that this is on the screen list?
Screenshot of a comment on Firstup in which a comment of "clean your old bag and donate it" was edited to "clean your 🎶 and donate it" because the phrase "old bag" was determined to be potentially offensive.

At last night's Salon of Shame, the evening ended with "Lucas with the Lid Off." I haven't heard this song in two decades but it is woven into the folds of my brain: I knew ALL OF IT. I just watched the video (Michel Gondry directed it) and that is incredibly familiar too. Come, remember with me!

Hang on, do people who don't intentionally crack their knuckles just walk around with tight-feeling joints all the time? (Related: Since my right ring finger was splinted for 6 weeks this summer, I can no longer pop the middle knuckle and it is INCREDIBLY distracting.)

I'll go first: When I checked out after the weekend ended, my wedding venue (a summer camp & conference center) said I was the most organized renter they'd ever worked with and the weekend was easy because of my thoughtful planning & communication. This was 13+ years ago and I still feel proud.

Tell me a compliment you were given a long time ago that you still think about (and get satisfaction from). I think about this a lot when I give compliments to other people (it reminds me to be specific). Is what I'm saying going to be something they come back to when they need a boost of pride?

5) We joined a Teams call and pulled up the room link on our browsers. The call allowed red/blue teams to chat before making guesses, and the spymasters ended up DMing one another separately (to agonize when their teams got off track), which ended up being an improvement on in-person play!

4) I started a dummy game on my computer, joined as a second player from my phone, and then took screenshots of both the spymaster and the operative experience to include in the meeting agenda. I also provided a rules recap and example spymaster clues/operative guesses given the board shown.

The frequency with which I am startled by a stink bug landing on my office window is unacceptable. 1) These fuckers are huge! They make so much noise when they land! 2) It happens so often! Why am I not used to it yet? 3) Why this window in particular? 4) Do stinkbugs find me attractive?
