People don’t like to think that the call is coming from inside the house. Ask me how I know! I get it; it’s a very uncomfortable and creepy feeling. But you gotta face it and deal with it! Not blame the person who in all good faith is trying to warn you 🤦‍♀️
Prisonculture: “So many people got yelled at for months on here when they correctly pointed out that Gavin Newsom was a rat.”

I took the quick test at mydialect.us and the resulting map shows that I apparently (still) talk like someone from Minnesota :)

Google makes it as difficult as possible to toggle off these settings. Most people won’t do it. Do it.
From Google: “We’re updating our settings to give you even more control over saved history and personalized recommendations across Google Search services and Google Play. Search services include Search, Maps, Shopping, Hotels, Flights, Translate, and News. You’ll see this change in your Google Account in the next few days.”

The name of the typeface’s original designer, Tobias Frere-Jones, does not appear once here. That (to put it mildly) is bonkers. www.creativeboom.com/resources/th...
From Creative Boom’s Best New Typefaces of May 2026: “Gotham Variable by Sara Soskolne

“Think you don't know Gotham? Trust me, you do. It's been used on GQ covers, on the Obama presidential campaign posters, on Netflix, on Coca-Cola, on the sides of buildings and on the backs of buses. For a quarter of a century, it's offered authority with a friendly face; geometric confidence without coldness. But how do you evolve a typeface that iconic, when the world it was designed for has fundamentally changed?

“Monotype's brilliant answer to that question is Gotham Variable. Developed by Sara Soskolne, with Jordan Bell handling language support, a single-file architecture introduces continuous control across both weight and width, consolidating what was previously a large family of static files into a single system. Fifty-four new intermediate static styles introduce new shades of weight and a new Compact width, but they've been designed to feel like they always belonged.

“Meanwhile, expanded language support adds Vietnamese alongside enhanced Cyrillic and Bulgarian. For brand teams operating at a global scale, this is exactly the kind of flexible, territory-spanning infrastructure they need in 2026.”

I can be kind of a snob about blizzards, but I’d say this qualifies.

I rarely post images of text, especially when they come from Vichy Twitter, but this one feels *deeply* personal for me. This is a word.

Yes, I linked to the brilliant Lit Hub piece skewering the NYT and then immediately shared this NYT piece on Cuomo. My dislike of Cuomo eclipses even my dislike of the NYT.
“This is in keeping with Mr. Cuomo’s supersize sense of entitlement, which manifests itself not just in his resentment that sexual assault allegations ended his governorship and insinuation that anyone else in the governor’s office is an inferior, but also in the way he repeatedly demonstrates without an iota of self-awareness that he is owed political power and authority. Apparently, he thinks it’s something you can inherit from your father.”

A little graphic made using the Mamdani sign generator that says “FOOD FOR EVERYONE.” The word “FOOD” is in the Mamdani flare serif face whose name I don’t know; the word “FOR” is in a casual brush script; the word “EVERYONE” is in a sans that I should be able to ID but cannot off the top of my head. Royal blue background; reversed out letters in gold; the word “FOOD“ has a red shadow.

Obviously I’m talking about everyday informal handwriting here, *not* calligraphy, which sadly I have never had the requisite patience to learn.
A closeup (macro) photo of some handwriting on lined paper, in which you can vaguely spot the names/words “Excoffon,” “Ganeau,” “typography,” “approach.” The writing doesn’t really stay within the lines.

Oh god even the OED is all ✨✨✨
Index page for the Oxford English Dictionary. Main element is a dictionary search field under the label “OED | Oxford English Dictionary.” Secondary menu at top right consists of four elements: (1) an information button, (2) an account button, (3) an advanced search option, and (4) a sparkly AI Search Assistant button. Ugh.

“AI spam is eating the internet, stealing our work, and destroying discoverability.” Missed this when it came out in January; reading it now with interest. www.404media.co/why-404-medi...
“The long answer is that, through our own reporting, we are realizing that in order to combat the fracturing of social media platforms, a Google discoverability crisis fueled by AI generated spam and AI-fueled SEO, and a media business environment that is in utter freefall, we need to be able to reach our readers directly using a platform that we own and control. To do that, we need your email address.”

It arrived 😌 Very much looking forward to reading @eireannmor.bsky.social’s Pattern-book.
A copy of Éireann Lorsung’s Pattern-book. The title “Pattern-book“ is stacked and repeated 13 times, negative leading, set in what looks to me, surprisingly, like Ascender’s HeiT ASC. (?) Coney Island is one of my favorite places in the universe. I took this picture a while back.
Coney Island on a sunny day. Large handcrafted slabby letters (made of metal? cardboard? wood?) spell out the word “THE”, part of a large sign for an arcade. Rooftops and smokestacks appear in the background. In the foreground: heavy white woman in profile, long brown curly hair pulled back, wearing large gold hoop earrings and sunglasses.

Friendly reminder that “inequality” and “inequity” are not interchangeable terms. Inequity is avoidable, material, structural; inequality refers to an uneven distribution of resources due to circumstances largely beyond our control.

Desperately, desperately pushing AI. It’s not enough to inject it into their SERPs. Now they have intrusive popups.
I foolishly googled something using Chrome, without any AI workarounds. A modal window popped up: “Get more homework help with AI Mode. Ask follow-ups to get help with your toughest homework questions.” A search field appears on top: “Ask anything…” And there are two buttons at the bottom: “Not interested” and “Continue”.

✨ Oh no ✨ My beloved Merriam-Webster has started using ✨AI✨
This appears to be new as of *today*. (Or at least: I use M-W literally every day, and this is the first time I’ve noticed it.)
