Felt so good to write after what felt like a long hiatus. Check out my new substack on working full time again at an alternative school and what it’s like reflecting on my younger self who’s been preparing for this work my entire life. literapynyc.substack.com/p/maybe-god-... #booksky

My students loved reading Gray by Laura Dockrill. A story about being loved even on your most BLAH feeling days. The visuals are amazing and creative - the kiddos loved the layered textures of the cut outs inside. A must read for little ones and adult readers alike! #booksky

Strung Up releases 10/6 and I can hear the pain in her voice as she reads & speaks to our community. In the introduction she apologizes that some of us will be mad at her for making us look. But I feel like her work and words are actually helping me not look away. Thank you @libro.fm for the ALC 🙏🏾

Yesterday was an amazing day and perfect way to kick off my birthday weekend. I had the honor of being in conversation with Professor Pryor and giving her much deserved flowers in a room full of beautiful souls. It’s moments like this, in community, that I’m reminded of the true healing power of 📚

This novel keeps it so real about what happens when women in the Black church are expected to sanctify their own suffering. Schar is one of the most honest narrators I’ve read in a long time. She is done shrinking herself to fit the suffocating role of First Lady. Done betraying herself 🙌🏾 #booksky

Reading is only the beginning. Every reader brings an entire life to the story. In my latest Substack, I’m sharing more about what happens when a passage stays with us and we pause long enough to ask: Why this? Why now? What might this be showing me about my own life? literapynyc.substack.com

StoryHeal is the first ever Bibliotherapy app created by a licensed therapist. This isn’t therapy, and you don’t need to know anything about bibliotherapy to begin. You just need a story and a willingness to get curious about what happens when it meets you. 🔗 under my profile pic. #booksky

I’ve spent years thinking about what happens between a reader and a story. And I’ve been building something to help you do exactly that. StoryHeal. A way to explore the connection between the stories you read and the story you’re living. Every story changes us. Tomorrow. 9.1.26. #booksky

Sometimes a book helps us see something or name it. Maybe a story helps you imagine another way of being. This is where reflection becomes connection. Not just: What did this story make me think about? But: What does what I noticed mean for the way I want to live? Story → Self → Life #books

Reading can become a conversation between the story on the page and the story you’re living. A character’s choices can make us think about our own. A fictional family can remind us of what we inherited. Reflection is the moment we ask: What am I learning about me? 3 more days until the reveal 🤗

I don’t believe every answer is waiting for us inside a book. I do believe books can help us ask better questions. Why feels familiar? What does this story make me reconsider? Sometimes the question we carry away from a book matters just as much as the book itself. Keep asking. 9.1.26 #booksky

Sometimes the most important part of reading isn’t what happened in the story but what happened inside of you while reading. The character you couldn’t stand. The relationship you found yourself defending. Before we try to explain it we can simply notice. What did this story bring up? 9.1.26

You know the sentence that makes you stop reading. You underline it. Maybe you take a picture or send to a friend. But what happens after you underline it? What if, instead of only asking What does this passage mean? we also asked: Why did this mean something to me? Something is coming 9.1.26.

One of Dolly’s greatest legacies will always be the Imagination Library. When I worked in NYC schools, I used to sign my students up to receive free books through the program. I saw firsthand what it meant for children to have books of their very own arriving at home. Love this book about her life

Happy book bday to Take What You Can 🎉 Some books ask you to slow down and this def was one of them. I kept putting sticky notes in the margins because the questions this novel raises about friendship, motherhood, grief, were evocative. Stories like this one are why I created the READ framework.

I read Ghalen by Walter Mosley twice and it still gave me something new the second time around with the audiobook narration. A beautiful meditation on Black family, Black love, and what it means to move through the world at the intersection of Blackness, manhood, and neurodivergence. #booksky

I cannot recommend this book enough. Made me a bit teary reading it because I realized the friendships that have endured through the motherhood season practice so many of the principles and bids for connection outlined. Sometimes we just need to widen our lens and this book helps us show up better🤌🏽

Colson effortlessly makes NYC feel like a character with a pulse. The city breathes, reinvents itself, wears people down, and somehow keeps calling them home. Carney is older now but Whitehead never lets us believe the past is something we leave behind. This story is about how we carry our history.

I’m in tears before I make it to ch 3. “There’s no one in there,” doctors told his family, a sentence that too many parents of autistic children have heard. Reminded that our job isn’t to decide what’s possible for our children but to give them every chance to become who they are. Pub date: 8/11

Ren writes about living in the in-between spaces and reminds us that our identities don’t exist in isolation. They are constantly informing one another. A question I think all of us should wrestle with: Am I code-switching, or am I masking? This book asks us to notice where we’re shrinking. #books
