Started and finished “Celestia” by Manuele Fior. I’m not sure what to think about it. It was a really dream like graphic novel. However the graphic novel is the perfect medium for the psychic intrusions that occur throughout. I’ll have to read some analysis to help inform my thoughts. #booksky

Started "The Tatami Galaxy" by Tomihiko Morimi last night. I've heard about the anime, but I didn't know that it was based on a book! You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but this one is excellent. #booksky
The cream-colored cover for "The Tatami Galaxy" by Tomihiko Morimi, translated by Emily Balistrieri. The title runs vertically in bold pink along the left edge; the author's name runs vertically in teal along the right. The central artwork is a dense manga-style collage: a young woman with a black bob is shown in profile, holding a film camera, while a young man in glasses lies on tatami flooring below her. They are surrounded by a grid of overlapping illustrated panels depicting cityscapes, a starry night sky, Japanese signage, a teal bird, small stuffed animals, butterflies, and a figure with purple hair shown upside-down at the bottom right. The palette mixes muted purples, blues, and earth tones within the illustrated panels, creating a surreal, layered feel.

Started listening to "Proust and the Squid." Although, I'm not sure if the author would be happy about that. 📚💙 This may mark the start of my obsession with the literacy crisis.
A cream-colored cover showing an open book's pages against a bright orange background. The title "Proust and the Squid" appears in large black serif type at the top, with the subtitle "The Story and Science of the Reading Brain" enclosed in a thin orange rectangle. The author name "Maryanne Wolf" appears in bold serif type at the bottom. A spiral of scattered letters and characters winds across the lower left, evoking the swirling complexity of language and the brain. The book's spine and page edges are visible along the right side, reinforcing the open-book motif.

Started “Tomb Sweeping” by Alexandra Chang. Two stories in, and I’m loving it. 💙📚🖋️
"Tomb Sweeping: Stories" by Alexandra Chang, author of Days of Distraction. A colorful illustrated cover divided into grid panels featuring everyday objects: a security camera on mint green, pink orchids, a magenta shopping cart, a hand selecting mahjong tiles from a red box, smoking incense sticks on yellow, a split pomegranate on red, two cats (one black and white, one gray) sitting together, and a woman in an orange shirt looking at her phone. The title appears in large yellow serif text on a lavender banner across the center.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage (2013) by Haruki Murakami. A lovely coming of age story. 💙📚
A minimalist cover with a soft, dreamy gradient background blending pale blue, green, yellow, and pink hues that evoke a watercolor sky or aurora. A single white circle sits in the center. The author name "HARUKI MURAKAMI" appears in white capital letters at the top, with the title "COLORLESS TSUKURU TAZAKI" below it, followed by "AND HIS YEARS OF PILGRIMAGE" in smaller text. Lost Souls Meet Under a Full Moon (2010) by Mizuki Tsujimura (t. Yuki Tejima). I liked this book far more than I expected. A chain of really great interleaved narratives. I cried a few times reading this book.💙📚
A whimsical illustrated cover with a textured blue-gray background featuring a large pink full moon behind decorative black silhouettes. The silhouettes include a figure in profile with elaborate swirling hair adorned with stars and celestial motifs, golden stylized clouds, and small bicycle icons. The title "LOST SOULS MEET UNDER A FULL MOON" appears in bright yellow-green capital letters across the top portion. "A Novel" appears in small text, with "Translated by Yuki Tejima" in blue. The author name "MIZUKI TSUJIMURA" appears in pink capital letters at the bottom, with "Internationally Bestselling Author and Winner of the Naoki Prize" in smaller yellow-green text below.

The Employees (2020) by Olga Ravn (t. Martin Aitken) Ambient novel about alienation (and maybe AI) in the workplace of the distant future. It has a very unique form: HR reports. 💙📚
A surreal cover on a black background featuring a pale sculptural form resembling a simplified human torso or mask in the center, surrounded by an organic pattern of interconnected cell-like structures in pink and coral tones with blue-gray nuclei. Small white star-like points are scattered across the black space. The title "THE EMPLOYEES" appears in white sans-serif capital letters at the top, with the author name "OLGA RAVN" in matching white text at the bottom.

One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (2025) by Omar El Akkad. Prose so beautiful you really need to slow down to read it and understand it fully. This book will go on to be read as an antiwar masterpiece. 💙📚
A bold orange-red cover with a minimalist design showing two dark silhouettes: a falling rocket at the top and a small figure of a girl reaching upward toward it below. A gold "NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER" badge with an open book icon appears in the upper left. The title "ONE DAY, EVERYONE WILL HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AGAINST THIS" is displayed in large black sans-serif capital letters across the lower portion. The Salt Grows Heavy (2023) by Cassandra Khaw. I love Bloodborne, and this novel captures the darkness and mystery of that universe quite well. 💙📚
A striking red and black cover featuring the title "THE SALT GROWS HEAVY" in large gold serif letters. A black silhouette of a gothic building or castle rises through the center of the text, with white illustrated details including skulls, chains, and architectural elements creating a dark fairy tale aesthetic. Rows of small white skull designs fill the lower right portion. A quote from N.K. Jemisin praising the author appears at the top in white text, identifying them as a New York Times bestselling author. The author name "cassandra khaw" appears in gold script at the bottom, with "USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR" in smaller capital letters beneath.

Shark Heart (2023) by Emily Habeck. A brilliant debut novel. An allegory so rediculous on the face that it removes you from your own experiences of disease. From there it can tear you apart. A deep meditation on care and grief. 💙📚
A purple cover featuring a shark silhouette filled with a vibrant collage of illustrated flowers including yellow sunflowers, orange and coral blooms, blue leaves, and small red flowers. The title "SHARK HEART A LOVE STORY" appears in bold white capital letters integrated with the floral design. Green plant leaves frame the bottom corners. "NATIONAL BESTSELLER" runs across the top in white, with a quote from Anthony Doerr in yellow and white text. The author name "Emily Habeck" appears in yellow script at the bottom.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune (2020) and When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain (2020) by Nghi Vo. A pair of novellas set in a rich universe. The magic here is deep and difficult. Again, you'll see my love for ambient works and the monastic life. 💙📚
A striking illustrated cover dominated by a large pink circle against a black starry background. Inside the circle, a white rabbit with long ears sits centrally, flanked by the partial faces of fantastical creatures—an orange-brown animal with prominent tusks on the right and what appears to be a striped creature on the left. The title "The Empress of Salt and Fortune" appears in white brush-style lettering across the lower portion, with "HUGO AWARD WINNER!" above the author name "NGHI VO" in white capitals. A quote from Seanan McGuire reading "Gorgeous. Cruel. Perfect." appears at the bottom.A dramatic illustrated cover featuring a stylized orange and red tiger with black stripes descending from the top against a black background with dark tree branches. The tiger's face is shown frontally with mirror-image tiger faces emerging from its shoulders, creating a three-headed effect with fierce yellow eyes and bared teeth. The title "When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain" appears in flowing golden script across the center, with "NGHI VO" in white capitals below. A quote from NPR reading "A remarkable accomplishment" with reference to The Empress of Salt and Fortune appears at the bottom in smaller text.

Shuna's Jourey (1983), Hayao Miyazaki (t. Alex Dudok De Wit). I consider Princess Mononoke to be the best movie ever made, so this early iteration of Miyazaki's naturalist thought is fascinating. 💙📚
A soft watercolor illustration on a pale yellow background showing a young person in explorer's clothing and hat riding a white elk across a desert landscape with purple-tinted mountains in the distance. The author name "HAYAO MIYAZAKI" appears in bold blue capital letters at the top, with the title "Shuna's Journey" in flowing orange script lettering below. At the bottom, smaller text reads "TRANSLATED BY ALEX DUDOK DE WIT" in black capitals.

Stone Yard Devotional (2024) by Charlotte Wood. I have always admired those that enter monastic life. A fascinating, fictional look at the depth of a simple spiritual life. Very ambient. 💙📚
A photographic cover showing a desolate landscape with dramatic cloudy skies in shades of blue and gray above a sandy beach. In the middle distance, a cluster of large weathered boulders sits on golden grassland, with a solitary figure standing nearby. The title "STONE YARD DEVOTIONAL" appears in bold burgundy capital letters across the sky, with "CHARLOTTE WOOD" in white letters at the bottom. A circular New York Times Notable Books badge appears in the upper left, and a "The Booker Prize 2024 Shortlisted" badge in the upper right. Text at the top reads "From the prize-winning author of The Weekend."

Small Things Like These (2021) by Claire Keegan. "And then the nights came on and the frosts took hold again, and blades of cold slid under doors and cut the knees off those who still knelt to say the rosary." Jealous of her ability to write this well. 💙📚
A rich green cover with white text and illustration depicting falling snow throughout. The title "SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE" appears in large white serif capital letters centered in the upper portion. The author name "CLAIRE KEEGAN" is displayed below in sans-serif capitals. The lower third features a white silhouette of a winter town with snow-covered rooftops, chimneys, and bare trees. A light blue circular "Oprah's Book Club 2024" badge appears in the upper right corner. Text at the top reads "A NEW YORK TIMES TOP 100 BOOK OF THE 21ST CENTURY" and at the bottom "SHORTLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE," both in black on the cream-colored border.

The City and its Uncertain Walls (2023) by Haruki Murakami (t. Philip Gabriel). Another good book from Murakami. I'm still trying to parse this novel, but I do think that it is worth reading. 💙📚
A stylized illustration in deep purples and blues showing a library interior with tall shelving units filled with glowing egg-shaped objects. An orange ribbon or path weaves through the scene, connecting to a single illuminated figure standing in a window. In the foreground, an empty chair and desk are outlined in orange against the purple floor, with two books lying nearby. The title "MURAKAMI" appears vertically in white letters on a lime green band along the right edge, with "THE CITY AND ITS UNCERTAIN WALLS" in smaller text below.

A minimalist cover with a pale beige-pink background. At the top, "THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER" appears in small black text, followed by "DAVE CULLEN" in larger white sans-serif letters. The title "COLUMBINE" is centered in bold black capital letters.
