Lindsay Ellis with another banger:
A picture of two bags of white bread in the foreground of a forest shot, one has a word bubble saying "i love you brayden." The captions from the video the picture was clipped from say "No Dark Fuck Princes of color for you. (giggles)."

18. For Sale by Exorcist (2024) - Melissa LaMartina not into everything her but had fun. love the lead. good movie to throw on and have fun with. fits the comfort niche of goofy horror with at least some likeable characters and without anything too problematic, which is an elusive sweet spot
Emily Classen as Susan Price in For Sale by Exorcist (2024) Holding a Ouija board in a waist up daylight shot in front of a slightly blurred pastoral background with what look to be a few farm animals and a wire fence.

17. Frewaka (2024) - Aislinn Clarke One of my favorite watches of the year so far. Visuals and sound were hypnotic, made me eager to learn more about the folklore it taps into, earns its themes.
Clare Monnelly as Shoo from Frewaka (2024) Stands in front of a closed red door at the end of a hallway. The Door is surrounded on its frame by a variety of items, assumedly meant as some sort of ward.

16. This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967) - Jose Mojica Marins
a depiction of hell from 1967s This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. A naked, red skinned demon patrols a section of cavern with grey walls and rocky outcroppings. A number of mostly nude souls are bound to crosses at a variety of angles, awaiting his torture.

15. The Church (1989) - Michele Soavi Like the rest of the directors work I've seen this one was quite weird, often though not always in a good way.
from 1989s The Church, a man kneels next to a large, blue-glowing cross shaped hole in a stone floor. Mist seeps out as he stares into its depths.

14. Creep (2004)
the villain from 2004s Creep, a half naked man with physical deformities, slowly lowers himself head first down from a vent in an underground section of a subway, lighting mostly blue, two-toned walls covered in a grime meant to indicate both age and disrepair.

13. An American Werewolf in London (1981) Haven't seen this in long enough that I'm counting it. Great movie, better than remembered, love some of the interactions. Hard to hype up sometimes given some of the things the director was responsible for afterwards, and his son's history.

12. Curse of Re-Animator (2022) Threequel to above above, i feel mostly the same about all three entries. I will weirdly kind of miss Josh Cole's "i'm doing the best i can with *gestures at circumstances*" take on Herbert West, Re-animator.
Josh Cole, with large glasses and bloodied labcoat, tie and undershirt, grinning sideways at the camera in Curse of the Re-Animator (2022), continuing to be somewhat charming despite the material.

11. Beyond the Resonator (2022) Sequel to above, a bit more fun but overall similar vibes. This movie and the third really want you to know that they have Herbert West, which is why the character refers to himself in the third person constantly and other characters use his full name
Josh Cole as Herbert West, Reanimator in Beyond the Resonator (2022), in a muted blue/gray dress shirt with dark tie, in some sort of underground laboratory, holding an extremely goopy head

10. The Resonator: Miskatonic U Was hoping to find this series more charming than was the case. There was a certain comfort to such short, familiar, dramatic micro-budget horror entries but overall would not recommend. Wierd amount of guns for lovecraftian horror, which i feel was a misstep.
The titular Resonator, a violet glowing globe set into ornate machinery with thick wires and equally if not similarly glowing forks or tongs sprouting from stands around the central device, from Resonator: Miskatonic U

9. Beyond Re-Animator (2003) Least favorite of the series. I enjoy watching Jeffrey Combs chew scenes, and have since i fell in love with Frighteners as a child, but as the series goes on and a the films get worse it's harder to distract myself from the problematic shit they shove into each movie
Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, Reanimator, from 2003s Beyond Re-Animator. West, shot from shoulder up in prison scrubs, holds a vial of strange green liquid in a begloved hand in what we assume is an operating room or laboratory.

8. Sputnik (2020) Some interesting sci-fi horror elements in here, a few fun scenes, compelling characters. I didn't see many takes agreeing with my interpretation of the ending, an interpretation which influenced my overall opinion of the film, so your mileage may vary.
Pytor Fyodorov as Konstantin Veshnyakov in 2020s Sputnik. Profile shot of the shoulders and head of a cosmonaut, red lighting over blood on the face and uniform. What's left of the clear helmet glows from backlighting which also illuminates fog.

6. Destroy All Neighbors My kind of freak, there's a lot about this movie that kind of annoys me but it sticks the landing in very specific and satisfying ways. Shout out to the Scaredy Cats review for saying it better than i can.
Destroy All Neighbors (2024) A charred corpse has a conversation with William Brown, played by Jonah Ray, in front of a glowing pair of frankly ridiculous guitars.

Wendigo (2001) The second Larry Fessenden movie I've watched. They're an acquired taste but they both had a lot to say about issues that are very personal to me (Habit w/ addiction and in this, the complex nature of fatherhood from a child's perspective). Two unique and special experiences
From Wendigo (2001) by Larry Fessender, side shot of a young son and father played by Erik Per Sullivan and Jake Weber, dressed in winter wear, sitting in the tall grass on a winter day, talking. The son looks forward, thinking, shot in profile while the father looks at him smiling.

4. The Beach House Actually dug this quite a bit, despite the frankly insane amount of secondhand discomfort i got in the first 30 minutes. Also wow that foot horror.
Liana Liberato as Emily from The Beach House (2019). A young woman with long, slightly windswept dark brown hair peeks out over the landing of wooden stairs leading to a beach. The sky is bright and the ocean is behind her. The shot is lined up so that the bottom half of the frame is taken up by the landing, and the sides of the top half are framed by the railings of the stairs. the woman's face sits just left of center. Her face is slightly askew, with her right eye shaded by her hair and the angle, while her left is highlighted by the lighting. The expression and framing create a sense of unease.

3. The Ward (2007) Working through some Carpenter. I appreciate some of what's going on here, but not for me. There's a lot of mental health horror, especially stuff made before the last few years, that I'm not very fond of. Even some that's made by well meaning folks can be pretty problematic.
Amber Heard as Kristen from The Ward (2007) by John Carpenter. A blonde woman in a now vintage red top (the movie takes place in the 60s) stands in a dark room looking through a peephole or small hole in the wall. Her face, with a look of concentration and mild shock or concern, is illuminated by the light shining through.

2. Immaculate (2024) I did not like this movie. I think there are much better movies out there about women's autonomy and it grosses me out that Sweeney originally auditioned for the role in 2014 when she was 17, given how the movie is shot and edited.

Define cinema with an Image
A shot from the 1997 japanese serial killer film Cure by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The scene is shot from behind detective Takabe, in conversation with Kunio Mamiya who is across the dimly lit room, sitting in a bed facing cameraside. An open Zippo lighter sits lit upon the table Takabe rests his shoulder on.

Pretty cool to see Tadanobu Asano win a Golden Globe. If anyone wants to check out some of his earlier stuff, Bright Future, Last Life in the Universe and Cafe Lumiere are all great and came out in the same year. Dude has been killing it for decades.

I Saw the TV Glow is my personal favorite movie of the decade so far. It was incredibly cathartic to watch and in light of both recent events and the general state of this country it feels vital and relevant in a way that not much I watch does.
