I got cruelly misled by the age a cat can generally live to thanks to the cat I grew up with living to 21 and just dying unexpectedly of nothing distinguishable. My cat dying at 16, 17 years later was horrific to me because she'd died but also surely she had more years! Surely!

Something something learning rhetoric and projection is a tool of the bourgeoisie something something?

Out of office is on, suitcase is mostly packed. I am gearing up for a) whatever my stepmother decides to criticise me for this visit (last visit was grey hair and stripy tops) and b) how much my father will hate the pigeon tattoo.

Have to say, on a gloomy and rainy day which has contained a gloomy senior leadership update (I work in HE, it's rarely cheery), I have been cheered up by discovering that Home City has a transinclusive Morris Dancing group.

I'm not saying this was good or anything. More that it feels ridiculous and wrong that in the intervening 22 years we haven't made any moves to making schools vaguely temperate/sorted out a resolution for heating and repair bills. (The leaky roof was still an issue in 2022.)

When I was in sixth form we had politics & history lessons in a converted coach house with no heating. The Ofsted inspectors got to watch us do warm up star jumps before learning about the October revolution. Still better than the RE classrooms where the roof leaked.

Given the long, torturous, journey of Home City's last Local Plan - runs 2017 to 2033, eventually approved in 2025. Then Communities Secretary Sajid Javid named us in 2018 as one of the councils with whom his patience had run out - I'm not holding out hopes for the consultation on the next one.

I'm starting to think that Big Cherry has sponsored this season of Bake Off. I swear there aren't usually this many cherry flavoured bakes.

I've just overheard a colleague in a related team be surprised that, as employees, we cost the employer more than we get paid. They were genuinely shocked.

I've had a series of dreams over the past couple of weels where I am surrounded by very snuggly rabbits of all sizes and types. They're nice enough dreams but I am confused as to where the rabbityness has come from. I don't mind rabbits, but they're not in my top ten animals.

I'm an easily frightened soul. I wasn't allowed to read Famous Five books after tea bc I would wake up petrified that I was about to be captured by a smuggler. That said, it's probably the sound of the Dark Riders from the BBC radio Lord of the Rings. The only sound being eerie hooves clip-clopping.

You are correct. Puce also needs to change because it's clearly a shade of green not red.

I've just read something on Reddit (I knowwww) about two people who are married to each other and they work in separate places but spend allllll day on a call with each other just hanging out. And they think this is fine and good. I'm sure it's working for them but fucking hell, just shoot me.

We don't even get justifications! Last year's would have been "you all complained about rotaed staff not getting to go to the staff party" if they were being honest about it.

I'm starting to think that part of the "teach your children this as they grow up and definitely before they start university" skillset should be "able to walk ten minutes in the dark".

It's so annoying. But I save the rage for helping colleagues who keep having their software licenses revoked for no good reason!

Mine is third hand, I think. Mine went kaput when we were still having loads of issues with supply chains and I got this one as a "temporary" substitute about five years ago. Every ticket for four years got closed with "it's new". To me, yes! To existence? Not at allll!!

There is something quite gratifying about a work IT person looking at the spec of your computer and going "wowwwww that is olddddd" when they finally turn up to look at a PC that you can best describe as "she chugs".

They might have need of one on occasion, in which case car clubs and hire exist. But day to day? Unlikely! The bus network is relatively good, the city is very small.

100%. I do not, and cannot, drive. This is occasionally inconvenient (small electronics recycling is nigh on impossible) but overall is entirely possible to manage. Occasionally people like me (live in a small walkable city, reasonably able bodied, no kids) claim they absolutely Need a car. Piffle.

I like my job and I like being good at my job. I loathe, however, the people who ask me to do something because they "know I'll be able to and they won't and isn't it wonderful that I do know how". It's an excel download from our timetabling system. There's an excel download button. It's easy.

I'm still kind of enjoying not having an animal fuelled by bloodlust in my home, but thanks for the idea! I loved Floyd endlessly but my ankles are enjoying not being perpetually a bit bleedy.

The bandsaw felt like a strange piece of machinery to have in my middle school's DT workshop. We were never (entirely understandably!!) ever allowed to touch it. It was seemingly only there for Father Michael to demonstrate on, and to tell us how bloodthirsty it was.

Not much happens in Home City so the residents like to wildly overreact to small things.

Though those pale in the face of one I saw for a different proposal which was "I can't believe I would have to pay this twice (to hotel and hospital) if I was hospitalised whilst on holiday". It is unbelievable yes, because you wouldn't have to pay the hospital.

Thus far I have really enjoyed "my son was born here but he would have to pay if he stayed in a hotel when visiting" and "an extra £1 per night is financially ruinous/scaling it on the star rating of the accommodation is classist".

Also, once again and louder for the people in the back who are refusing to listen, universities are not responsible for job markets. We teach students and we teach them well, but we are not "graduate job" creation engines.

I haven't dared listen! A colleague is doing a "listen to an album a day for 365 days" challenge and I think it's on the list.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. My team and I have been badly hiding cackles of laughter about it for most of the morning. In the course of this we've discovered that Sting and Shaggy released an album in 2018.

There is a proposal for a tourist tax in my local area and one of my minor amusements for the past few months has been reading people being Exceptionally Not Normal about it in the local paper.

I'm not sure I'll ever not find it amusing how disconcerted American bands are by the British desire for a communal sing along.

I have just been discussing the very important (& legally soon-to-be-required) Preventing Sexual Harassment Risk Register & it was disappointing for it to be a room of 1 white man &8 white women. Mandate a representative sample of staff for this stuff!

I really need Yorkshire Water to calm down right now. The overly enthusiastic/ingratiating tone of the emails and text messages about my upcoming water meter appointment are very grating! It's a water meter upgrade not a ticket for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, ffs.

Admittedly this is a minor quibble when the plot of the book it's in revolves around werewolves and the Brontës but Emily Brontë would not be describing lead shot as blueberry sized. Blueberries would take another 100 or so years to make their way to the UK.

100%! My mother had a will & whilst there were some small hiccups everything went relatively smoothly. My father (who, for additional fun, lives abroad) does not have one &refuses to get one and I, an only child, am left vaguely hoping he dies before my stepmother so it's all her children's problem.

I love local newspaper efforts to localise news stories. I also love how much this makes it look like Starmer will be doing the terrible cross-Pennine commute.
A picture of Keir Starmer looking a bit haunted against a backdrop of a train in York Station. The headline reads: How Keir Starmer could be appointed to a job in North Yorkshire.

One of the few things I miss about living on the Isle of Wight is the velux window in my bedroom that meant I could hear the rain pelt down in a very specific way and watch thunderstorms make their way across the fields. These days I stand at the backdoor and hope the storm is trapped in the valley.
