How strong are contrast effects? Join us at the U Penn seminar and find out: After @vasilisawerner.bsky.social presents her super-polished (former JM) paper, "Destructive Communication", I will present "Individual Preferences for Truth-Telling". Tomorrow, 7 pm CET. Registration: shorturl.at/mD1qe
Screenshot of the email announcing Visilisa's talk, "Destructive Communication" with headshot, affiliation, title and abstract.

The abstract reads:
"Does communication always promote socially efficient behavior? We challenge this common proposition by showing that communication becomes destructive in polarized contexts. In an online experiment, we investigate what happens when participants who fundamentally disagree communicate. We exogenously vary the degree of polarization and the participants’ ability to communicate. When participants are sufficiently polarized, communication no longer improves trust and significantly reduces trustworthiness. Using natural language processing and supervised machine learning, we document that a substantial fraction of participants focus their communication on being polarized, leading to a destructive effect on both trust and trustworthiness. Our findings challenge the universality of contact theory, highlighting that communication may backfire in settings where parties hold opposing views."
Screenshort from the seminar announcement email with title "Individual Preferences for Truth-Telling", abstract and headshot of Lisa.

The abstract reads:
"Contrary to the traditional economic view that individuals misreport private information to maximize material payoffs, recent evidence highlights robust preferences for truth-telling among many decision-makers. Theoretical models that align with aggregate behavioral patterns posit that these preferences arise from both an intrinsic motivation to be honest and a desire to be perceived as honest. We propose a novel incentivized measure to independently capture these two motives at the individual level for the first time. We validate the measure’s properties experimentally and show that it predicts behavior in other commonly studied situations that allow for (dis)honesty. The measure enables the classification of individual preference types, revealing systematic heterogeneity and fairly stable type distributions across different samples. Additionally, we propose an experimentally validated 2-minute survey module that proxies both motives and predicts behavior in a typical reporting task. Including this module in a large panel, we offer first insights into how early-life experiences may shape preferences for being and being seen as honest."

I present to you the ultimate filing cabinet for old and resting (let's be honest: abandoned) projects, well hidden under a staircase in the back entrance of a local government office.
Old and run-down metal filing cabinet with one drawer missing. This missing drawer stands upright next to the cabinet. The cabinet is empty and looks abandoned.

I guess the same as with the papers showing gender bias in the publication process and teaching evaluations: nothing. When I pointed out this research on teaching evaluations at the start of my tenure track, it was just ignored. I still have a target score above which I need to be evaluated.
Screenshot of title, authors and abstract of a journal article published in the Journal of the European Economic Association.

Title: Gender Bias in Teaching Evaluations
Authors: Mengel, Sauermann, Zölitz

Abstract: This paper provides new evidence on gender bias in teaching evaluations. We exploit a quasi-experimental dataset of 19,952 student evaluations of university faculty in a context where students are randomly allocated to female or male instructors. Despite the fact that neither students’ grades nor self-study hours are affected by the instructor’s gender, we find that women receive systematically lower teaching evaluations than their male colleagues. This bias is driven by male students’ evaluations, is larger for mathematical courses, and particularly pronounced for junior women. The gender bias in teaching evaluations we document may have direct as well as indirect effects on the career progression of women by affecting junior women’s confidence and through the reallocation of instructor resources away from research and toward teaching.

Just had a MS Teams meeting with one additional "participant" that nobody knew how to get rid of. So it listened to our call and just sent a summary (not that bad) + some metrics. The meeting was 82 effective! (to me, longer than necessary) Now I wonder how all my other meetings compare.
Screenshot from an email that shows metrics of the meeting. It lists a read score (82), an engagement score (91) and a sentiment score (73).

4️⃣ design an unincentivized survey module that - captures both cost types - correlates with our experimental measure - is predictive of behavior in the mind game - takes two minutes to complete 6/7
Screenshot of a slide that presents the survey module.

`Please imagine the host of a live radio show calls you to participate in a radio raffle. Your task is the following: you must flip a coin 4 times and report the number of `tails' you flipped. You will receive 10 pounds for each reported `tail'. You know that there is no way the host can verify whether you reported the true number of `tails' you flipped.'

Imagine the unlikely case occurs that you flip 0 tails.
How many tails will you report to the host?

3️⃣ demonstrate the measure is - internally valid (using treatments that vary the costs) - predictive of behavior in other commonly used experimental honesty paradigms Example below: mind game in which participants whom we classify as having low ILC and low SIC claim larger payoffs. 5/7
The figure consists of four panels and shows the distribution of claimed payoffs in the mind game by IPT types in the student sample (n=331).

2️⃣ classify four main preference types 1) low ILC & low SIC 2) low ILC & high SIC 3) high ILC & low SIC 4) high ILC & high SIC and document substantial heterogeneity in types across three different samples: - student sample, - convenience sample, and - UK representative sample. 4/7
Bar chart of type distribution across the three samples. All four types are present in the three samples. The most prevalent type has low ILC and high SIC. The least prevalent type has high ILC and high SIC.

Behavioral/experimental #EconSky with interest in honesty: Our working paper is finally here! "Individual Preferences for Truth-Telling" - with @simeonschudy.bsky.social and Susanna Grundmann. First, here is what ChatGPT imagines it is about. Now, let me tell you what we actually do. 1/7
AI generated picture based on the following prompt: "A person stands at a forked path under a softly lit sky. On the left path, labeled “Truth,” bright light radiates forward, leading to an open horizon. On the right path, labeled “Falsehood,” shadows and twisting vines coil, hinting at uncertainty. Above the individual’s head, a subtle thought bubble or glowing scale tilts slightly in favor of truth, suggesting their preference or internal struggle. The person’s face appears reflective yet determined, conveying the choice to speak honestly even amidst potential conflict or complexity.

Stylistically, imagine gentle, yet vivid colors—warm golds and cool blues—to emphasize the moral dimension of telling the truth. Incorporate symbolic elements like a feather (lightness of truth) and a chain (weight of falsehood). The overall composition should evoke the tension and reflection involved in deciding to uphold honesty."

Why can't all countries have such a smooth visa application process like 🇰🇪? No "passport-style" photo? Take a selfie, and the software adjusts it. Can easily be completed in <10 minutes, response usually in <72 hours. Yes, looking at you, 🇩🇪...such a long list of requirements. For the photo.

The photo should be of high quality and accurately represent your true appearance.
The background of the photo should be light grey.
