EHRC’s Sex Segregation starts on 5th Aug.
Be careful how you respond.
The EHRC’s updated Code of Practice comes into force on 5 August 2026. It will change how organisations describe and manage access to single-sex services, including toilets.

For welcoming venues, the biggest immediate risk may be being wrong-footed into making a broad statement about your policy when somebody complains. A hurried response such as “we allow trans women to use the women’s toilets” could be presented as evidence that you knowingly operate the facility in a particular way.

Do not panic. Do not debate somebody’s sex in public. Do not humiliate or interrogate anyone. Keep your response calm, private and focused on safety, dignity, privacy and proportionate handling

A JUDGE has ruled it is unlawful for trans women to be housed in the female prison estate.

Lady Ross has published her decision following the petition for judicial review brought by For Women Scotland (FWS), which challenged the Scottish Government’s policy on the treatment of transgender prisoners.

The group had challenged the lawfulness of the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) policy of holding some trans women in women’s prisons. The SPS has taken an "individualised" approached to the housing of trans prisoners, who make up a small minority of the prison population.

It came after FWS won a Supreme Court case in April last year which saw judges at the UK’s highest court rule the term “woman” in the Equality Act refers to a biological woman.

The definition in the law is pretty wide though:

A person has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person's sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex

Our assessment IS therefore that the likely impacts on gender reassignment as a characteristic are negative, in relation to each of the 3 limbs of the PSED. Mitigating factors are the ability of service providers to create 'third-space provision for trans people, and the guidance in the Code on when it is, and IS not, proportionate and necessary to request information on sex at birth

Apropos of nothing in particular but... I've just noticed that the wording on the GRC statutory declaration has changed since I signed mine Comparing the old and the current versions, the new version says "gender" 🤔

The old form, text says

l am over 18 years of age.
I have lived full time as a male/female (delete as appropriate) for X years since I transitioned in (date)

l intend to live full time as a male/female (delete as appropriate) until death.

The new form, text says

I transitioned in (date)

l have lived as a (insert 'male' or 'female' as appropriate)

The oak tree I planted last year has survived the winter! 🌳

An oak sapling about 50cm tall between two stout wooden posts - I know, it's growing between the dead pieces of other trees sob - and surrounded by a cylindrical wire cage about 30cm diameter and 150cm high. Behind is a privet hedge busily growing more work for us. The sapling is sprouting leaves, still quite thin and yet to form the classic oak leaf shape

Cleaned the aquariums out, residents largely unimpressed
