In my crazy quilt of interests and experiences, Tim Curry was a gargantuan piece. Midnight screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show were a ritual — I’ve seen it about 50 times. We had the very good fortune to see him on Broadway as King Arthur in Spamalot. His memory WILL be for a blessing.

RIP Dolly Parton. Her dying while the ruling monsters live is a cruel, unfunny joke and more proof that we are living in The Upside Down. I really hope her Imagination Library continues. I would expect she arranged that but if she didn’t, someone must. (Photo: The Associated Press)

I think your message got cut off. Happy to have any intelligent conversation about Mideast conflicts but it’s strange to have it on the heels of a post for my show. And since it was about George, we should be talking about Bangladesh! 😁

Awesome! I played alternate takes of all the tracks for my show and really enjoyed picking them out. It’s so much fun to hear the songs taking shape. And I love when you hear them discussing arrangements.

Our history isn’t pretty, but it’s ours. Study it, and think about how we can solve our lingering issues. Our potential is the most important part to celebrate — not what we were, not what we are, but what we can be. /-30-

And here we are, 50 years later, and the semiquincentennial and all the joy surrounding it has been stolen by this administration. They also took the ability to come together and celebrate (if their goal is gleefully watching people suffer, we can’t build bridges). 9/

The American Freedom Train toured the country (and came to Fort Wayne, but it was so crowded we couldn’t get in). Everyone got into the bicentennial coins (quarters had the biggest circulation, but there were also half dollars and dollar coins) and the $2 bill. 8/

There were TV programs (that’s when Schoolhouse Rock debuted its American history videos), books, and comics (one of my favorites had Spider-Man and Captain America battling a time traveler determined to destroy our opportunity for independence). 7/

But even with that backdrop, EVERYONE was excited about the bicentennial. Celebration was everywhere, and there was a special emphasis on children. 6/

There was a fuel shortage. Inflation was a serious issue. There was a fledgling environmental movement (that part of the 70s I desperately want back), and it faced a lot of pollution to clean up. 4/

Women were fighting hard for equality — and even though there were some important gains (you can’t lose your job because you’re pregnant and you can open your own bank account now), we’re closer to the base of the mountain than the peak (but we’re still climbing). 3/
