What do you do when your observatory is simply too big for Earth? 🌍 You send it into space! 🚀 LISA will be the first space-based observatory for gravitational waves, using three spacecraft separated by millions of kilometres. 🎥 @drbecky.bsky.social explains: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JvI...

Happy birthday #GW150914! 11 years ago today, we caught our first gravitational wave, and founded a new type of astronomy A decade later, we now have hundreds of observations! 🔭🧪🎂
Classic plot showing GW150914. Filtered data from LIGO Livingston and LIGO Hanford are shown, both show the characteristic signal of a binary black hole. Crucially, data from the two observatories agree, indicating a real signal.

How did you get interested in LISA or science? In 2006-2007, I met Prof. Peter Bender during my Chadra Fellowship at the University of Colorado in Boulder: Peter had been among the first to propose a LISA-type mission, and his enthusiasm for the science that could be achieved by LISA was contagious.

Gravitational waves carry information from before light could travel freely, when the universe was an opaque plasma. This opens a window onto new physics beyond known laws, and perhaps the very origin of spacetime, whether it began in a Big Bang or bounced from an earlier phase. #LISASymposium2026
