Really interesting data, thank you! Have you considered a stacked column chart for that data? I believe it could communicate the gaps between the recorded years a bit better.

Are you creating great explanatory #dataviz (e.g. in a news or business context) and want to teach others how to become great at data vis, too? Let’s talk!
Hello there! Do you like to design and talk about charts? On the comms team at Datawrapper, we want to inspire people to create better data visualizations and help them do so. We’re thinking about hiring somebody new. Maybe you? Let’s talk, if you…
→ are a data vis designer with attention to detail. You put all your love into that one beautiful chart that explains the data really well.
→ want to teach others how to design charts & maps well and have ideas for doing so (e.g. newsletters, courses, videos, events – whatever you’re excited about).
→ live in (or can move to!) Europe. We’re based in Berlin, and you can work remotely.
If that sounds like you, get in touch! Message me here on LinkedIn or send me an email at lisa@datawrapper.de.
(You’re not that person but know someone who might be? Please share!)

🟡🟠🔴 Just stumbled upon a great gradient/color palette generator by @obumbratta.com: obumbratta.com/colour It's inspired by Gregor Aisch's Color Palette Helper (gka.github.io/palettes/#/9...) and brings it to the next level with a color plot, contrast ratios, and different color spaces. 📊

My first (short, German) talk in years (!) is happening tomorrow at Information Commons in Berlin (information-commons.org). I'll speak about what got me excited about data vis and what we do at Datawrapper. Here are my slides:

In 2015, Derek Watkins built a chart for The New York Times that I liked so much that two years later, I wrote a whole article about it: www.datawrapper.de/blog/readers... Today, I rebuilt it in Datawrapper with updated data: www.datawrapper.de/_/vnJXh/ That was fun. I should rebuild more charts.

Interesting data! But I feel like the chart would benefit from being transposed, so that it's easier to compare the non-swimmers with each other:

📊 There are *so* many chart types out there. Which one should you use for what kind of data and goal? I tried to answer the question in a new blog post (and poster!): www.datawrapper.de/blog/chart-t...
A poster showing icons for 40 different visualization types, categorized by goal – e.g. "showing shares" or "showing flows" or "showing developments over time".

Thanks for doing and sharing your research – fascinating! I really like the split continents map; haven't see this before. Other mobile-friendly map approaches I know are → splitting a map in the middle (www.nytimes.com/interactive/...) → rotating the map (www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/pol...)

🎉 New blog post! Choosing colors for a #dataviz on race, ethnicity or continents can be tricky. I collected lots of examples and wrote down 6 guidelines to help ensure all your readers feel respected by your color choices: blog.datawrapper.de/colors-for-r...

That looks beautiful! Haven't tried the colors, but the presentation is amazing. I really like the little charts on the side giving the L, C, and H "profiles". Great find!

I guess so, too! I quickly drafted a survey (forms.gle/UhExR8jzxe28... – the options shuffle randomly) with the questions I'd include, but I'm sure a stats person like @steveharoz.com could improve it.

I'm annoyed by the number of social networks these days, so I've decided to only read the feed of one of them for a month and then switch. (I'll still post & check notifications on each of them.) I start here, with Bluesky. I'm looking forward to all your data visualizations, links, and opinions!

Hi! I'm trying to post more here. Like this: Today I published a blog post that will hopefully help all of you who love data vis, but have no idea how to go from there to "actually creating great data vis". It's full of my learnings from many years. Find it here: blog.datawrapper.de/how-to-get-s...
