Libby said she was told that combat-pay-related benefits were missing from her late husband's final paycheck because Congress had not formally declared war on Iran. The Trump administration has chosen to wage war with Iran without a formal congressional declaration of war. Critics argue that decision has created a legal and political gray area in which military families like the Klinner family can pay the price.

After Libby's post drew public attention, the Air Force began an audit of her benefits. But the service has not explained why she was initially told those benefits were unavailable - or whether other military families have faced similar issues.
