oh boy, yeah the gestures as a lefty would probably be a massive hassle unless they got tweaks for them the folding iphone legit seems unusable unless you're a righty

I legit can't go back to Android cause the gesture control is still so underdeveloped and janky while iOS, even now, feels like I'm using something from the future 😭

i remember playing uncharted 2 when i was 11 and turning it off cause it was so mindless. it's insane how it somehow became the watermark for single player gaming at the same time millions were figuring out games like League and Dota no problem.

Even the OST doesn't have the punch of someone like Tangerine Dream holding it up. I just genuinely don't understand what anyone is getting excited about?

Ever since GTA V they've seemed committed to just making visual novels with a bunch of needlessly complicated tech. And that's fine, but the story they've shown so far in VI is the blandest crime show pastiche I've ever seen.

You could have AI generated that whole trailer. Legit nothing in there that felt surprising or new besides how expensive it looks.

It’s honestly scary how much interest in things is generally directed by marketing spend. Like it’s not necessary to follow, but I always notice how much online content shares topic with major game or movie releases just because it boosts views to ride the wave.

I really wish Ice Frog would go more into what influenced him to balance and design Dota in the way he did. It’s one of the most beautifully designed games out there and it’s almost a black box how he made it because he never shares insights.

I also still feel like there’s a big missed opportunity to sell discs as special editions. Giving the option to make “collectors discs” for pre-orders only and coming with much better packaging I think would be a much better compromise than just cutting them out altogether.
000
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
They aren’t. The majority of discs come with a full game that works. The discs even include PS5 system updates so you can update your system without the internet. The only caveat is that most of the time games are V1.0 so you probably want to download patches anyway to fix bugs.
000
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
That’s fine, but it would’ve stung a ton less if they continued printing discs for new PS5 releases until the PS5 was properly phased out. It just feels really shitty image wise to have a console with a disc drive you invested in and having that feature get cut off arbitrarily.

The thing is I understand what they’re describing, just that those terms feel too intense. You don’t get anything as real as an enemy faction animal trafficking and fighting the dead ghosts of those animals in a dungeon in the newer games lol It just feels more like 5-10 guys made Red + Blue.

The story at least surprisingly redeems the experience in the last 3-4 hours. Wasn’t expecting the thoughtful deconstruction of the pirate life the game ends with.

Yeah, I remember going to an Avalanches show around that time and they used AI for some graphics which was actually kinda cool and psychedelic the way they did it. Idk I think it does look neat in that context but the tech has too much blood surrounding it. youtu.be/52_lFX2WdzY?...

lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Maybe the extreme counter example of that is visual novels? Like if there's 0 systems for player expression then it puts a limit to what you can do. Still, I feel like if someone is passionate enough they'd find a way to use controller inputs to overflow something and exploit through a game lol.
000
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
But even then it's interesting how with speedrunning realistically that doesn't matter. Me making my game that way just lowers the barrier of entry to get the "speedrun experience." Just make a game that feels good, people will keep playing it, and speedrun magic will happen lol.
110
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
In a game jam I was trying to put together a game that was more conducive to speedrunning and my approach was less to leave "alternate paths" and more to leave the level design and movement system open for player expression.

Fascinating how Lanier's current thoughts on AI seem a lot more diplomatic in comparison? Maybe part of it is because it's sourced from the open internet and messy instead of fully deterministically put together like earlier agents were? youtu.be/TTppvBU2rU4?...

Kind of absurd to be reading thoughts on "agentic computing" from all the way back in 1995 and how they haven't aged a day lmao dl.acm.org/doi/epdf/10....
Article quote from "Agents of Alienation" by Jaron Lanier

"Well, actually, agent programs as a rule will also have worse user interfaces than non-agent programs.

Here is how people reduce themselves by acknowledging agents, step by step:

Step 1) Person gives computer program extra deference because it is supposed to be "smart" and "autonomous". (People have a tendency to yield authority to computers anyway, and it's a shame. In my experience and observations, computers, unlike other tools, seem to produce the best results when users have an antagonistic attitude towards them.)

Step 2) Projected autonomy is a self-fulfilling prophecy, as anyone who has ever had a teddy bear knows. The person starts to think of the computer as being like a person.

Step 3) As a consequence of unavoidable psychological algebra, the person starts to think of himself as being like the computer.

Step 4) Unlike a teddy bear, the computer is made of ideas. The person starts to limit herself to the categories and procedures represented in the computer, without realizing what has been lost. Music becomes MIDI, art becomes Postscript. I believe that this process is the precise origin of the nerdy quality that the outside world perceives in some computer culture.

Step 5) This process is greatly exacerbated if the software is conceived of as an agent and is therefore attempting to represent the person with a software model. The person's act of projecting autonomy onto the computer becomes an unconscious choice to limit behaviors to those that fit naturally into the grooves of the software model."Quote from "Agents of Alienation" by Jaron Lanier

"Agent (n): A network/database query program whose user interface is so obscure that the user must think of it as a quirky, but powerful, person in order to accept it. ALT. Definition: A program that conceals a haphazard personality profile of a user from that user."Quote from "Agents of Alienation" by Jaron Lanier

"So, why am I enraged by the notion of agents? What galls me aren't just the practical problems, but I'll summarize those first, to get them out of the way:

· If info-consumers see the world through agent's eyes, then advertising will transform into the art of controlling agents, through bribing, hacking, whatever. You can imagine an "arms race" between armor-plated agents and hacker-laden ad agencies. Lovely.

· Since agents are little computer programs, they'll have a lot more in common with each other than people do. Agents would become the new information bottleneck, narrowing the otherwise delightfully anarchic infobahn, which was supposed to replace the broadcast model with something more inclusive.

An agent's model of what you are interested in will be a cartoon model, and you will see a cartoon version of the world through the agent's eyes. It is therefore a self-reinforcing model. This will recreate the lowest-common-denominator approach to content that plagues TV. "You're interested in Balinese ritual, therefore you're interested in travel, therefore you're interested in the Infobahn Travel Game Show!".

· Agents will inevitably deliver an overdose of kitsch. Microsoft's "Bob" is the agent of the moment, and it proposes to the user a life of caricatured meaninglessness, sliding unintentionally into the grotesque, that is straight out of Diane Arbus."

lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
But yeah, long term a disc isn’t really “preservation” considering patches and even different disc versions. It is a weird thing though where until a console is exploited to run game dumps I prefer to have physical so I’m not dependent on an account that can be shut down any moment.
000
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Most of them on Playstation and Switch aren’t. The full game is on there and they even contain system updates to patch your firmware if your console is out of date. All fully offline.

I launched Vice City yesterday and it just made me laugh because despite them spending $1 billion it’s just a bunch of eye candy on top of the same game lmao The older games are more sandboxy and player expressive with their mission design too

Yeah I was thinking how Noah Caldwell Gervais is close to this kind of thing, but it feels a little too literary and not enough game design. His perspective (in terms of skill level) + attention to detail about explaining how he feels is about right though.

lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Channels like Game Maker’s Toolkit do sort of make this content, but it’s not too interesting because they’re usually just showing choices games make without diving into why those choices were made. The trade offs of doing things certain ways and maybe the cultural reasoning the game is what it is.
100
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
It’s a tricky one too because to make this kind of content well you need to be experienced enough to understand the limits and know how those limits are affecting the average player or not.
110
lingo @lingo56.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
I suppose it’s maybe more properly edited video essay style content but discussing the gameplay less at its limits and more how it interacts with the average player. Like it’s still in depth analysis, but instead how 99% of the population is actually interacting with the game.
