On September 23, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at Gracie Mansion. Quoting Federico García Lorca, he connected the struggle against fascism in Spain to the ongoing responsibility to defend democracy, equality, and justice today.

Sam Gonshak was born #otd on the Lower East Side of New York City 1911. Sam arrived in Spain on March 15, 1937, serving with the Lincoln Battalion when it captured Belchite. He was wounded & later became the political commissar of the 15th Brigade transports. He returned to the US on Dec. 20, 1938.

Today marks two years since the passing of ALBA Board Chair Emeritus Peter N. Carroll. His contributions to ALBA were incalculable, and today we remember the lasting legacy he has left behind. In his honor, we are sharing this video of Peter reading a poem from his last work, Sketches from Spain.

Steve Tsermegas was born #otd in Ikaria, 1903. He served in the Greek Army and worked as a cook until he arrived in the US in 1921. He traveled from Egypt and France before the US. He was a member of the FWIU and the CPUSA before he arrived in Spain in January 1937.

Orrin Erland Feldt was born on August 23, 1910 in Detroit to socialist Finnish immigrants. Trained as a metal finisher, he organized the Detroit Unemployed Council and was at the 1932 Ford hunger march. He joined the CPUSA and UAW before he took part in the 1936-37 Flint sit-down strike.

William Lindsay Gresham was born #otd in Baltimore, 1909. Raised in NYC, and a writer, worked many jobs and joined the CPUSA in 1935. He arrived in Spain on October 9, 1937 and served with ALB until he returned to the US on February 4, 1939. He published Nightmare Alley in 1946.

May Levine was born #otd in NYC, 1914. She attended an IWO sponsored Jewish school and graduated from Lebanon Hospital nursing school in 1935. She joined the CPUSA before she arrived in Spain on May 29, 1937. She served as nurse until she returned to the US on September 26, 1938.

Bennet Jeffries Doty was born #otd in Faunsdale, 1900. He is a descendant of Edward Doty from the Mayflower. He joined the Tennessee National Guard at 16 and was sent to France by March 1918. He saw combat at St. Miguel and Meuse-Argonne but returned by March 1919.

Robert Caughlin Colver was born #otd in NYC, 1912. He graduated CCNY & attended Georgetown Law for a year. He served 6 months in the National Guard Coastal Artillery. He also worked as a clerk, fingerprint analyst & organizer for the CPUSA. He arrived in Spain on June 15, 1937.

Aaron Harris was born #otd in Centerville, NY, 1905. He joined the CPUSA in 1934 and sailed for Spain on December 26, 1936. He served with ALB until he was WIA at Jarama and lost an eye. He returned to the US on August 20, 1937 and married Helen Frishman on August 18, 1941.

Edgar Gurevitz was born #otd in Chicago, 1915. He graduated from Harrison Technical High School in 1932 and joined the CPUSA in 1935. He worked as a clerk before he sailed for Spain on December 18, 1937. He served with ALB until he was KIA on April 1, 1938 at Gandesa.

Esther Miriam Silverstein was born #otd in Torrington, WY, 1913. She graduated from UCSF in 1934 and worked as a nurse at the San Francisco Marine Hospital. Inspired by her patients who followed the early battles, she arrived in Spain on May 19, 1937 to serve with the AMB.

William Aalto was born #otd in NYC, 1916. He joined the YCL in 1935 and worked as a driver. He arrived in Spain on February 10, 1937 and was selected for Soviet guerrilla warfare training. Fighting behind enemy lines at most major battles, he helped liberate 300 POWs at Carchuna.

Leo Eloesser was born #otd in San Francisco, 1881. He studied music at UC Berkeley before he studied medicine in Germany. He returned to the US in 1909 and became an important thoracic surgeon based at Stanford. He was a physician to labor leader Thomas Mooney and Frida Kahlo.

ALB volunteer Boris Zaslovsky was born #OtD in Chicago, 1911. He worked as a printer, was a member of the CP and AFL, served in the ALB in the Service Sanitaire in Hospital Casa Roja, and returned to the US in October 1938 aboard the Ile de France.

Joseph Lafayette Young was born #otd in Bellefonte, PA, 1914. He left to become a sailor and joined the YCL by 1933. He sailed for Spain on February 20, 1937 and served with ALB until he was captured at Gandesa on April 2, 1938. Joseph returned to the US on September 5, 1939

Samuel Lissitz was born #otd in Chicago, 1910. He arrived in Spain on April 24, 1937 and returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He also went by the name Bob Cole and later served in the US Army during WWII. He worked as a healthcare administrator in the Pacific and Midwest.

Henry George was born #otd in Huntsville, 1906. A member of the CPUSA and WAA, he was a sign painter in Philadelphia when he arrived in Spain on July 5, 1937. He served with ALB as a clerk and cook from Quinto to Ebro. He returned to the US on December 15, 1938.

Salaria Kea was born #otd in Milledgeville, 1913. Raised in Akron, she faced racial discrimination. She sailed for Spain on March 27, 1937, serving as the only African American nurse. She was WIA at the Villa Paz Hospital, returning to the US on May 16, 1938. albavolunteer.org/2022/02/sala...

William Baker Kwanaekoa was born #otd in Honolulu, 1909. He served in the Coast Guard before he worked as a deep sea diver, sailor, and Teamsters truck driver. He arrived in Spain on August 19, 1937 and was WIA in the jaw at Brunete. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

In Spain, efforts to transform the Valley of Cuelgamuros, the former Francoist monument once known as the Valley of the Fallen, are facing resistance. Machinery used in the site’s “resignification” project was tagged with pro-Franco messages. Read more: www.democrata.es/en/politics/...

Elijah Joseph Taylor Jr. was born #otd in Griffin, GA, 1907. He joined the YCL in 1934 and worked as a machinist. He arrived in Spain on June 20, 1937 and served with ALB. He was WIA twice and returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He later served in the US Army during WWII.

Sidney Bassin was born #otd in NYC, 1910. He worked as a traveling salesman and joined the CPUSA in April 1937. He arrived in Spain by June 22, 1937 and served with ALB as a driver until he returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Abraham Albert Koslow was born #otd in Brooklyn, 1909. He was an organizer with the Unemployed Councils in Brooklyn before he arrived in Spain on February 20, 1937. He was WIA on April 18, 1937 and returned to the US by September 12, 1937. He later served in the US Army in WWII.

Basilio Curtis Obret was born #otd in Marianao, Havana, 1898. He relocated to US in 1920, playing baseball in the Negro National League. A member of the Cuban Workers Club & CPUSA, he arrived in Spain on February 4, 1937. He passed away on May 8, 1959 in Cuba, after the successful Cuban revolution.

Lazar Leo Gordon was born #otd in NYC, 1909. He worked as a teacher and joined the CPUSA in 1933. He arrived in Spain on April 15, 1937 and served with ALB as a commissar. He returned to the US on February 4, 1939. He continued to work as a teacher until his unexpected passing on December 11, 1969.

Rose Freed (left, next to Langston Hughes) was born #otd in NYC, 1911. She worked as a lab tech and microbiologist before she sailed for Spain on January 16, 1937. She joined the PCE in May 1937 and served with the AMB until she returned to the US on August 27, 1938.

Toby Jensky was born #otd in NYC, 1911. A nurse at Beth Israel, she sailed for Spain on April 14, 1937. She served with the AMB until she returned to the US on May 9, 1938. She continued to work as a nurse at Beth Israel until she retired, asissting Fredericka Martin with research until the 1980s.

Michael Antonio Papadopullo was born #otd in Watertown, 1913. He went by Nick Pappas when he arrived in Spain on February 19, 1937. Nick served with ALB as an officer in a machine gun company and as an instructor. He returned to the US on September 26, 1938.

Fred Paul Keller was born #otd in NYC, 1913. He attended Columbia for two years while he worked as a driver and mechanic. He was a member of the ALP before he sailed for Spain a day after he turned 24. He served with ALB as a commissar and joined the PCE. He was WIA at Ebro.

Fredericka Imogen Martin was born #otd in Cooperstown, NY (1905). A nurse at Crotona Park Hospital, she left for Spain on Jan. 16, 1937, serving as Chief Nurse with the first AMB group. She returned to the U.S. on Jan. 26, 1938, ultimately settling in Mexico where she lived until her death in 1993.
