That looks a lot like a Trenton-style tomato pie to me. I thought a Philadelphia tomato pie was more like a sfincione, but I’m not 100% certain.

My research didn’t really prepare me for how big a $15 blueberry bush could be or how 3 would fit in the car, especially when one of my less salubrious traits is choosing the largest, most vigorous-looking whatever when they’re all the same price (I am a downright menace on a Christmas-tree lot).
Rows and rows of potted blueberry bushes in front of a barn. The sky is blue with puffy white clouds and a sprinkler is running. The bushes closest to the camera are about 5 feet tall, and the further ones are around 3 feet tall. 2 more blocks of potted blueberry bushes, some that are 3-4 feet tall and others that are over 5 feet tall. At the far right, there are potted blackberries and a dolphin statue

I would actively seek out the cheddar scalloped potato ones; unfortunately, having worked with concentrated turkey flavor has ruined all turkey for me (not because there’s anything objectionable in it, but because I can’t un-smell the sulfur notes—passion fruit was similarly ruined).

It’s been so long since I’ve been in this part of South Jersey that I had almost forgotten how pretty the Pine Barrens can be.

He offers Duke, Bluecrop, and Elliott, which all should be just fine! However, I am guessing that I don’t necessarily want irrefutable proof of what political beliefs a South Jersey landowner who calls himself “Blueberry Bill” holds, which is a danger of going to Hammonton in person.

I’m trying to pick out blueberry bushes before it’s too late to get them in the ground and there sure are a lot? My first thought was to get older varieties like Rubel that are more like native bushes, but I am also tempted to throw up my hands and get the 3 kinds a guy named “Blueberry Bill” sells.

You can’t go wrong with cream cheese frosting, but chocolate ganache frosting comes in at a close second for me.

I am really enjoying the new Bundt pan I treated myself to!
A golden brown Bundt cake in the form of a laurel wreath. The vanilla cake really shows off the leaves.

Anecdotally, the combination of Sudafed/naproxen/coffee I take for weather headaches also helps my joints, but a heating pad also really helps. My arthritis is autoimmune, though.

While my expansive “try a new recipe every month in 2026” resolution has been great fun, I think 2027 might have to be The Year of “No.”

The reservoir is also plastic (but doesn’t get hot) and it’s not programmable either, but grad school taught me that I cannot be trusted with a whole pot of coffee at a time, and there aren’t a lot of non-Keurig single-serve coffeemakers out there.

I’ve seen people modding their Moccamasters to remove plastic from the pathway of the hot water, but that’s not really an economical solution either (I splurged on a Cup One, but haven’t gotten around to changing out the brew basket).

That sounds delicious! Now I wish I bought the freeze-dried strawberries that Costco had on sale last week! I do have some spray-dried cherry juice powder; maybe I’ll experiment with that.

Both salsas are delicious, and are making me feel a little better about not having canned anything so far this year. The salsa verde is tangy enough for me without any lime juice, so a safe canning recipe for my tomatillos would probably be unbearably sour (I will freeze what I can’t eat, instead).

For my September new-recipe resolution, I tried two salsas, using homegrown tomatillos, tomatoes, and jalapeños: Salsa Verde con Jalapeño y Comino from Pati Jinich’s new book La Frontera, and @smittenkitchen.bsky.social 3-ingredient salsa (I did add onion to both recipes).
Green and smaller green-and-purple tomatillos, garlic cloves, 2 stemmed and halved jalapeño peppers and half an onion arrayed on a baking sheet for broiling Halved plum tomatoes, 2 onion quarters, 2 stemmed and halved jalapeños (one red and ripe, one green) and garlic cloves on a baking sheet.

“Well, I asked the AI and it told me what I want to do is just fine!” feels pretty lousy as a response to a reasoned explanation of why something is not a great idea, actually.

One of my pumpkin vines just put out 2 baby pumpkins and the squirrels took a big chomp out of both of them! Otherwise, I have 3 pumpkins total on one of my 4 plants and 0 pumpkins on the other 3.

I might get some ripe Habanada peppers before the first frost, after all! I’m glad that plant and the jalapeño are thriving because my 2 poblanos did absolutely nothing this year.
A closeup of a slightly pointy light yellow green pepper beginning to blush orange. This plant is so loaded with peppers that I had to lean it on a wire rack to keep it from falling over.

(Granted, gardening in NJ is easy mode for tomatoes, but with some strategic variety selection, I start my tomato seeds outside after the last frost in May and am eating tomatoes by early August at the latest. If I bothered with indoor seed starting, I’d be looking at July.)

I know that in the fall and into winter, I will be very happy and grateful for the refrigerator pickles, and frozen tomato products cooked summer squash and beans and figs, and whatever I get around to properly canning. Right now, the gardening and food preservation feel like a second full-time job.

If you’re looking to buy, I recommend the Bottled in Bond Apple Brandy over the Applejack (by law, the latter has to be lower proof and cut with a neutral spirit). Both drink more like a whiskey than a calvados.

If you have applejack or other apple brandy on hand, it’s really nice in place of the vodka in a Moscow Mule (I call it a Monmouth Mule because Laird’s was originally made in Monmouth County, but it likely has a different official name).

I love an Americano—it’s like a low-octane, highball version of a Negroni (equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth, topped with soda water).

Peeling 2 pounds of homegrown plum tomatoes by hand like the recipe in the cookbook calls for is not even the tiniest bit fun (a serrated peeler helps), but the end result is summery magic. The larger Polish Linguisa tomatoes were superior to the Opalka for this because they’re less fiddly to peel.
A light gray pan full of raw, finely diced tomatoes over diced onions that have been cooked to a very pale gold color. The spoonula in the pan is purple. The now lightly cooked tomatoes and onions tossed with spaghetti and parm in a mixing bowl with my trusty purple spoonula

It also seems to work well enough for my purposes in regular bread doughs, so it’s become the only yeast I keep on hand (I only have so much freezer space to devote to yeast).

In my experience, it really does give a better/faster rise to enriched/sweet doughs so you don’t have to leave doughs with lots of eggs and dairy out on the counter proofing for hours and hours.

I am so annoyed that in deference to the dregs of this migraine, I’ve had to put off making the Marcella Hazan tomato sauce with onion and butter (not THAT one—the other one) that I’ve been looking forward to all season because the Parmigiano Reggiano will absolutely send it rip-roaring back.

I’ve been having all these amorphous bad feelings since my employer went all-in on AI, and you just put them into words. I also always knew there’s no expectation of privacy on a company laptop, but the way constant surveillance is now touted as a selling point because of AI is messing me up a bit

Meta keeps trying to serve me rebel canning content as some kind of ragebait, I think (or maybe because I’ve been looking at various refrigerator pickle recipes around the internet)? I have less than zero interest in watching complete strangers play Russian roulette with their food, though.
