Spent my Saturday volunteering with the rotary club at the Saanichton Fair. Was a long day but a really good time! Spent the morning at the ring toss (the bottles are from the 60s and still being used!) and the afternoon at “lucky ducky” where everyone is a winner!

The Main thing I learned in the garden this year is to give up growing flower starts and just direct seed. They did take forever though lol

They are not the type of Japanese pumpkin I thought I was growing so I’m grateful to Google image for figuring them out. Excited to bake them later! Not a first but had quite a good zinnia haul.

Short stint at the garden last night. A bunch of firsts! First crown on the cob, first aster growing (I had given up!) first Japanese pumpkins. The one plant I have only gave me two but I still consider this a success!

Got some fall starts on the way (broccoli, corn, squash, peas etc.) teddy bear sunflowers finally blooming, made some incredible carrot muffins and carrot soup with our weird ass carrots, let loose 250 ladybugs to help with our greenhouse aphid problem and did a bunch of cleaning up.

The garden end of July. Harvested our first elephant garlic! Lemon cukes and Japanese pumpkins are showing up! First peppermint zinnia is here as well. Summer, I miss you already and you’re still here.

We got to see Carney again on the last leg of his tour before election day right around midnight! We were stuck behind the worst boomers ever but the Prime Minister was funny and charming and Ryan and I got to shake his hand (Ryan got the awkward long left hand - handshake!) Incredible night.

Today in garden news: Ryan has irrigated the greenhouse and the tomatoes are looking good! Also planted a Japanese squash and lemon cucumber. Asparagus are starting to pop up and lettuce is looking good too!
