GDP per head (PPP) started higher than France and level with Germany in 1960. By 1979 we were well behind. Strong overall growth in the 80s and 90s meant by 1999 we had got back to pretty much level. 000

The Eurobarometer series a pretty robust one, and it shows life satisfaction as broadly flat in the UK (and European neighbours) in the 70s, 80 and 90s. 'Happiest year' in that series - 1990. 100
